Most Overrated Vol

not really underrated, but onterrio smith was a definite bust IMO. he showed alot of potential in the games he did play but couldn't stay out of trouble. got kicked off the team, wound up at oregon, and eventually played for the vikings in the nfl. if my memory serves me right he failed a drug test and got suspended from the league.

Well, I guess you receive partial credit for your memory. He failed MULTIPLE drug tests and got busted going through airport security with the world famous Whizzinator and got suspended from the NFL. I find it quite interesting that he was booted from UT for multiple drug violations in under two years and then he went on to play the rest of his career at Oregon with no known drug violations. Then, he went on to fail four or more drug tests in the NFL and be suspended from the league in just a couple of seasons. It really makes you wonder about the level of integrity of the program at the University of Oregon.

When you say "Most Overrated Vol", there is only one name I think of, and many will scoff at the fact that I am about to call the patron saint of Tennessee football overrated, but I'm just going to say it anyways.

Peyton Manning.

Yep, I know I'll draw negative comments all over the place, but what the hell.

Remind me what our record is against Florida.

Remind me how many national championships we won while Peyton was here.

Remind me how many SEC championships we won. Yes, we won one, but if he's as good as everyone keeps saying he was, why didn't we win 2, or even to stretch, 3. With the talent we had on those mid-90's squad, we should've built a freaking dynasty in the SEC in '95 and '96. Now, nationally, yes, you've got that 1995 Nebraska team. Maybe we wouldn't have won a national title in 1995 and 1996. 1997 should have been the year that we won. All the pieces in place for a NC run. And, the sad thing is, we almost did it. In the Bowl Alliance NC game, however, we got crushed. Maybe we ran into a team better than us. In fact, we did. However, we should've at least been in the ball game.

I know most of you will call me an idiot, moron, retard, whatever. Some of you will point out my age. I know it'll come. Just know that I really don't care. That's my position, and there's not a soul on this planet that will get me to change.

Most Overrated player by the coaches: Jon Hefney and Leonard Scott. Hef got a lot of praise without that much criticism. A good player, no doubt, but definitely overrated. Scott was one of the fastest men on the planet and yet I don't think he ever scored a kick-off TD (I may be wrong here)

Most overrated player by media: Kenny O'Neal (said he was going to solve our receiving problems and be our go-to deep threat)

Most Overrated player by Volnation: Gerald Williams (the guy hasn't done anything yet) and Rod Wilks, ha.

AND, Most underrated player: Derrick Tinsley

I'd say goodbye to my relatives if I were you.

I won't call you any names, but that's a terrible pick. Peyton Manning put Tennessee back on the map. We had lost to Bama like 9 straight times before he beat them 3 straight. He holds a number of records. He won 3 bowl games. He is 2nd all time in SEC wins. Had 3 top 10 finishes in the AP poll. Oh yeah, and the first SEC championship Tennessee had in 7 years.

I'm pretty sure Tennessee hasn't had another period of 3 straight top 10 finishes in my lifetime. That's what Peyton Manning did.

I've always thought that Tennessee football was on the map pre-Peyton, or BP(Before Peyton).

Look man. I ain't gonna lie, maybe I have a little bias against Peyton, because I like Tee Martin a little better than Peyton. However, success is measured in championships. And Peyton just never got the job done all the ways. Now, maybe, some of it might have been Fulmer. But 1 SEC title in 4 years for a team that should have won 2 or 3 just isn't going to cut it with me.

I can't think of another player that even comes closes. Riggs is to this category as Usain Bolt is to the 200 meters.

He was really good when he started. Not sure why he'd be considered overrated. I've never seen anyone hail him as anything that great, anyway.

Probably because you were eight years old when he was playing. We didn't win more because we had the most overrated head coach, offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator of all time.

Tee Martin should have won the SEC twice, as well. He also only had to score 10 offensive points to beat Florida.

Did I not just say that maybe our coaching staff contributed to our downfall those two years?

For some reason, I thought you'd be the one to give me an argument over this.

Peyton and Tee had the same coach. One huge difference is Martin had a lot less points to score in order to beat the Gators.

Ehh, defense was probably better in 98 and 99 as well. Not by a large margin, but enough to make a difference. But, Tee, and Tennessee, found a way to beat the Gators in 1998, whereas Peyton, with the better team in 1997, didn't. Maybe Florida had a better team in 1997. They had come off of a NC the year before........... However, didn't Peyton get picked like 3 or 4 times and only threw 1 TD in that game. Or am I thinking of the 96 game?

If Peyton was truly special he would have put up 63pts to beat UF. I mean, Tee put up 20

I don't really care. Fulmer was completely psyched out by Spurrier. We could have fielded the 85 Bears against a Spurrier coached middle school squad and we'd lose. We got lucky that Spurrier decided to do his QB carousel thing. Even if you pin the 97 loss on Peyton, we wouldn't have beaten the Wuerrfel led Gators no matter who was under center.

I'll spot you that. However, there's still 3 years where a Peyton Manning-led team couldn't beat the Florida Gators.

Yes, Manning never beat Florida, but he's the greatest QB in Tennessee history. When people think of Tennessee football, they think of Peyton Manning.

Wrong category. Coker is high on the list of "biggest wastes of immense talent." But I wouldn't call him overrated. When he played, he played well.

Right Category...He never ran for jack against good teams. People talk like he was the second coming in '06.
Other than the PA WR pass he caught against GA, he never did anything special to me.

if you're giving him the Wuerffel years then how are there still 3?

Well, my thinking is this. Florida had a devastating team in 1996. NC winners, considered one of the 30 greatest college football teams, even though they shouldn't be. There are still 3 years, when UF wasn't as good as the Vols, and Peyton, by his soph. year, was the leader of this team.

How in the crap were we better than the 96 Gators?
