MLB Draft Talk (July 13th 6pm EDT & July 14th 11:30am EDT)

I don't think it was spelled out as a transcript issue for Moore. But it was mentioned in this thread that he was not expected to make it to UT. I think he was pegged as a guy who just 100% wanted to go pro. It's mentioned above by @WGWTFA98 that that might have hurt his pro prospects and he lost leverage.
Yeah it was Matt Barr who had the academic issues. McKee even made the remark this morning on Swain’s show that pretty much under no circumstances was Barr making it to Knoxville because of the academic issues.

Moore was just ready to go to the league and made that very publicly known. So much so that people have said he lost every bit of leverage he had with MLB teams. And that’s how he ended up heading to Knoxville.

Could end up being a huge blessing for him. Hopefully he sees it that way.

Unproductive players down the stretch. I guess I assumed that anyone watching Vol baseball knew that, but maybe not.
Ouchie. Didn’t quite meet my expectations, either. Every year some will exceed, others meet and others yet need a visit or two from Carla… 😉

Player's coach (they will do anything he asks because he does a great job of building relationships in recruiting. No BS like it or not), best recruiter in the business, understands how to surround himself with good guys (Frank being the perfect example from day one. Many young coaches would not have wanted an older former HC), Let's the guys be themselves, works really hard getting them seen for pros (even if the fans, especially VN fans don't like it. He will be loyal to a T because he expects the same from them.) Honest with himself. And lastly a great communicator. Radio, tv, podcasts, MLB draft. I think that is because he is honest and knowledgeable. He is a learner.
The only thing I have ever heard him say as a negative is he takes blame for making questionable decisions but says I was trying to win a game. But it has worked out pretty good for him.
Best Coach I’ve ever seen in interpersonal skills and communication.

What recruit wouldn't want to play for a guy like that? Rhetorical.

I'll join you on the unpopular line. I think I'd rather turn the page on Bargo and Chapman. Thanks for the memories, but let's move forward.
I’m willing to leave it up to Tony, Frank and Josh. It wouldn’t twist my titties either way. Sacrifice leadership and experience at the expense of unproven production/potential of improved production. Team chemistry is a variable woven in the mix regardless of the direction they chose. It’s why they get the big bucks and we’re relegated to posting on a fan board. 🤣😉🤙🏼

Thanks for your reply. We are blessed with great men leading our young men. The comment about hiring Frank is very telling. You are 100 correct in that not many young coaches would have made that hire. Tells me TV values winning and is very secure in his own skin. I personally have never met him but can see him as a fantastic communicator. I think Tony is really a people person also. He actually looks like he enjoys talking and being around people.

Yeah, I assumed incorrectly that they might not be back, but love those two guys. I’ll ride with the coaching staff and their decision. Either way the decision will be made without my input. 😀😀

Give me a macro view of how we..meaning Tennessee...faired in the draft as far as talent acquisition. Love the insite but the minutiae is mind numbing.

Of the top 100 recruits, between 38-42 will sign MLB deals. So of the remaining ~60, we will have 6 coming to campus, which is either tied for the most, or is the most of any school. Only 3 of the top 25 recruits aren’t signing with an MLB team (I think), and we got 1 of those guys (Appenzeller). We also got our best incoming transfer (Ford), as he went undrafted. Finally, Brandon Arvidson announced he’s returning next year, which was unexpected and huge for our pitching staff.

Realistically, it couldn’t have gone much better for us.

I must be mistaken I thought someone said he couldn’t get admitted due to a transcript issue? Was that someone else?
Not Moore - he just always planned on going pro and was pretty vocal about it. Perhaps too vocal to the point it killed all his leverage. Number got so low that it made sense for him to just go ahead and come to school, but I don’t think that was the plan

lol don’t act like I don’t watch the games. Yes they both had slumps at the end. Bargo was one of our best hitters in SEC play. I get they aren’t flashy players and in a lot of ways I’m ready for some new blood too but calling them unproductive is flat out incorrect. Thought anyone that knew baseball knew that, but maybe not.

Overall it was a very successful few days. We didn’t bat 100% but it went about as well as you reasonably could’ve expected. Every negative surprise was met with an even more positive surprise

I think it’s somewhat telling that “one of the best hitters” in our lineup did not even get drafted in a 20 round draft. That is kind of a stark illustration of the offensive issues we had as a team in SEC play. I’m ready for some new blood. It’s a harsh reality, but that is just how professional sports are (which let’s not kid ourselves, this is now professional sports).

Some are just tremendous college players and don’t have the “metrics” the Scouts desire for MLB. You can’t measure heart and desire. Ensley was a great player at TN and cemented his legendary career with a NC. He could still sign FA contract but obviously wasn’t drafted…

Next year's team is going to be very Sophomore and Freshman heavy, who is the leader of the team. Hard for an incoming player to be the man on the team?

This is fair. Bargo had a great 2 years here. I am thankful for his contributions. But I am not sure there is an extra gear to be found and he likely is who he is as a player at this point. Personally, I’d prefer we give the higher ceiling players a shot to play. I think it’s fair to say Bargo likely has a higher floor than some of the young guys who have barely played (e.g, Grimmer), but I don’t think he has a higher ceiling and if we want to win another national championship it’s going to take a lineup filled with those high ceiling players to make it happen.

It‘s hard to win a NC with a bunch of 1st year players (counting transfers who are Soph or Juniors). Need that team continuity, experience, and veteran leadership. The 26 team will be lacking all the above without Bargo and Chapman.

That’s a glaring gap for the 26 team (if Bargo and Chapman don’t return) and MIGHT keep them from Omaha. Granted in the new world of portal and NIL, it will be a weakness or gap for many teams.

Doyle, Kilen, and Fischer had no issue coming in and being leaders. In this era, it is becoming more common and necessary. In fact, I'd say it is maybe a trait the staff looks for in transfer candidates.

IMHO—None of those guys were team leaders. They were all great players but weren’t leaders. Ensley was the leader on the 25 team. It wasn’t in Kilen’s personality and hard for Doyle as a starting pitcher. Fischer could be a bit polarizing
