MLB Draft Talk (July 13th 6pm EDT & July 14th 11:30am EDT)

Interesting that some think MLB managers get fired quick. Didn't Chris Lemonis lead MSU to a National Championship recently and then got Axed this past season

Job security in the NCAA is far better for a baseball manager than in the MLB. Lemonis is a popular example but he won the title in 2021 and then underperformed for 4 straight seasons before finally getting canned.

The turnover of major league managers is pretty stark, especially considering the expanded post-season means ownership expects results faster than they have in the past.

“After 2 seasons of not making the postseason, the coach led the team back to NCAA Regionals in 2024. According to USA Today, Lemonis' buyout from Mississippi State will come out to $1.2 million.” - ai 🤖

Not having secured that extension in ‘22 or ‘23 prolly played a huge role in their decision.

Dave Roberts with Dodgers 2020 and 2024
Brian Snitker 2021 with Braves
Dusty Baker 2022 with Astros
Bruce Bochy 2023 with Texas

Now quick no googling name the last 5 CWS winners Head Coaches

CTV in 2024

I gave you one of them name the other 4..
The pecker at LSU, twice. There's two more of them.

No redshirts in 26 as they all count towards the roster. DSA designation means they don’t count towards the roster regardless if they play or not. I’m guessing TN will designate at least 6 freshmen as DSAs. That solves the issue. Hopefully TN submitted a very liberal of DSAs list by 7/6. There’s no punishment for over designating so better to err on side of caution and designate more than less since due date was before MLB draft.

Gotcha. Thanks. I haven't been following this particular issue that closely so appreciate the clarification.

Speaking of, and for what it’s worth, Jacob Parker (Jo Jo’s twin, drafted in the 19th round) said today he will play for Mississippi State next year instead of signing with the Diamondbacks.

Arkansas (no respect for the game), LSU, Clempson, and FSU were all listed as losers. And they can suck it.
LSU was a "loser" because of what they lost, but they also managed to hang onto 6 top-100 kids, which ties Tennessee for the most in the country. They had 12 committed, so they lost half but still did alright.

I'd include Vandy in the loser category. They only had 12 commitments to begin with, but 6 were top-100. They lost 4 of them, including 3 1st-rounders and a 2nd-rounder.

I know the corndogs will reload. I’m just enjoying myself. A great two days for the good guys.

Good catch on the whining Corbins. 👍

Lemonis got fired because he only won with someone else's recruits and then could not win with his. That is the key in college. Not what you do early on but can you recruit and win with your recruits. Those who can't trade jobs often so no one realizes it. Also knowing your strengths and weaknesses. Making sure that you hire guys as assistants that fill your voids.

Much has been written about the assembling of Vitello’s staff. Hopefully that subject becomes a work of non fiction and fills in the gaps. Somehow, I feel there were gears turning that didn’t receive full credit.

I absolutely hate that Bargo & Chapman didn't get drafted. Figured a team would take a flyer on them in the later rounds

Got to imagine they didn't see this coming
They did not. Portal recruiting etc were all done assuming Peebles Bargo and Chapman were moving on. We will see how they approach now with Bargo and Chapman. They’re gonna meet with them to discuss and I’d assume we have an idea in the next day or two

Chapman had a huge SO% and Bargo totally tanked the last 3-4weeks. Hard to see them taking valuable spots from talented players coming in. Too many good players to have unproductive guys playing much. I would agree with you. Reality is harsh sometimes. I was crushed not making my local tee ball team.
They might not have been all SEC players but calling them unproductive is a stretch

Whoa...that was extremely unexpected.
Extremely. It was so well known that he fully intended to sign on with a pro team that I think he actually nuked all of his leverage to the point where it made way more sense to go to school.

But again it adds to the numbers crunch because they were definitely not banking on having him on the team

Preach what do you think are Tony’s strengths and weaknesses as a coach.May not be a fair question. Let me reframe it . What would Tony say are his strengths and weaknesses.

Player's coach (they will do anything he asks because he does a great job of building relationships in recruiting. No BS like it or not), best recruiter in the business, understands how to surround himself with good guys (Frank being the perfect example from day one. Many young coaches would not have wanted an older former HC), Let's the guys be themselves, works really hard getting them seen for pros (even if the fans, especially VN fans don't like it. He will be loyal to a T because he expects the same from them.) Honest with himself. And lastly a great communicator. Radio, tv, podcasts, MLB draft. I think that is because he is honest and knowledgeable. He is a learner.
The only thing I have ever heard him say as a negative is he takes blame for making questionable decisions but says I was trying to win a game. But it has worked out pretty good for him.

I must be mistaken I thought someone said he couldn’t get admitted due to a transcript issue? Was that someone else?
I don't think it was spelled out as a transcript issue for Moore. But it was mentioned in this thread that he was not expected to make it to UT. I think he was pegged as a guy who just 100% wanted to go pro. It's mentioned above by @WGWTFA98 that that might have hurt his pro prospects and he lost leverage.
