Mike Leach (Texas Tech)

Mel Kiper said Ryan Leaf would be an all pro.

Kiper makes a living by making predictions on players. With as many predictions as he has made, he is bound to make a mistake from time to time. There were a lot of people who though Leaf would be a solid QB. Although I take Kiper with a grain of salt, it would be unwise to discount him because of a few misses on players.

WR is a funny position......look at some of the WR's that were absolute studs in college......Mike Williams, Dwayne Jarrett, Kerry Colbert among others.......and have been, at least so far, total busts in the NFL.

Attitude reflects a lot when discussing that trio of players. Colbert looked like he had the potential early on in Carolina. Jarrett still has time but he looks very similar to Williams in that he thinks he's much better than he is.

I think Crabtree will turn into a decent Pro but not worth the draft pick it's going to take to get him. He'll easily be top 10 if he comes out. He should be a late first rounder. I'd much rather have Percy Harvin than Crabtree.

Bwahahaha! You obviously haven't seen the best receiver in college football...Michael Crabtree! You could be a complete neophyte to football and know that he is hands down better than anyone else playing the position. He has great hands, runs the best ruotes and is as strong as a bull(almost impossible to bring down). Crabtree won't be outplayed by anyone at any level.

You ever heard of Darrius Heyward-Bey?

I didn't say I discount him. Simply saying he's got enough misses that he's not going to change my mind about Green and Crabtree.

Fair enough. I think Crabtree is better than Green personally. The quality of player they make in the NFL depends on the ability to understand NFL offenses and defenses and also which system they are in. Also, will they be a number 2 WR with a STUD at 1 to open up the game for them or will they be a 1 with a weak 2 as to be able to double with coverage over top.

Just an FYI, Leach left UK at least 1.5 years or so before the NCAA came knocking. I'm confident that the problems weren't because of his actions.

Florida's offense should be way down next year with the loss of Harvin and Tebow. Plus, on D, they will lose their top player, Spikes.

Why do you think Tebow would go pro early? I know he won the Heisman, but he has never shown anything that led me to believe that he doesn't love UF and Meyer and wants to jump to the pro's. Trust me I want him to, but I just don't see that happening. IMO he is one of those special player's that put school, team, and coach before his pro ambitions, like we had with Peyton and John Henderson. Stafford and Moreno on the other hand I think are gone.

Kiper makes a living by making predictions on players.
Kiper makes a living having loud, concrete opinions and presenting them in a manner that draftniks find entertaining. NFL GMs make a living making predictions on players. There's a huge difference.

McShay is better :p

On the subject of Crabtree.....I guess every NFL scout is wrong in saying he is clearly the best true WR in the nation. Did you see his play the last two games? Was the catch he made and scored on against TX just "a product of the system"?? If you have the opinion that he is gonna suck in the NFL....and least have some things to back up that opinion. And the SEC vs. Big 12 debate could go round and round forever. SEC fans will say SEC offenses look bas cause the Defenses are so good.....and that Big 12 O's look good cause their D's are bad. Big 12 fan will say the opposite....that the crappy offenses of the SEC make the defenses overhyped, and the offenses of the Big 12 are so good they make the D look bad. Never ending.

Hat, if we're ruling out Gruden, my Top 4 includes your Top 3 + Leach. I've read some of your opinions of him. I've also read your negative reactions to the thought of hiring some other potential candidates including Muschamp, Petersen, and Whittingham.

How would you react to Leach being hired?

Also, what do you think about Ball State's Brady Hoke? His name has been mentioned on VN a little bit.

Ive heard some discussion on ESPN about every draft eligible player that has the chance to go high in the draft would commit this year....because of something about a rookie salary cap starting the next year in the NFL? I heard it in passing, so I could be mistaken.

It's real simple. When one of the myriad of receivers who have played in the Hal Mumme/Mike Leach/June Jones/Every Other Clown Who Runs Some Variation Of The Mouse Davis Offense produces a receiver who contributes significantly in the NFL, they'll be the first.

Don't bring Mouse Davis into it. I did that in another thread and it killed it.

Well, what he does is basically talk to scouts, GMs, and other analysts to come to his conclusions. Yes, if he messes up, it is on to next year and a GM has to live with the mistake longer, but he still gets paid for those predictions.

I bet if we did an analysis of where players where drafted, and where Kiper projected a player, they would be fairly accurate. That would mean if Kiper missed on a player, a GM probably did too.

I along with probably you, shake my head on draft day at where Kiper projects some of his guys. I still think he gets more right than wrong though.

How is everyone missing this point? I know those are all good offenses but there is no way you average those type of point totals agaisnt good defenses. Its not just one team. Its the entire conference that is very weak on defense.

Which is why he stated that the Big 12 defenses were terrible before he gave the teams' scoring averages.

can Mike Leach win big at Tennessee?
is he one of the few coaches out there who is a true difference maker?

let's see

Tech has won 12 games in a row (longest streak in the nation)
Tech has won 21 of their last 25 games
Tech has 5 wins in a row vs. Top 25 teams including #1, #2 & #9

How much of that was attributed to "coaching his players up"?
Crabtree had one other offer out of high school - to play DB for Kansas
Harrell was a 4 star recruit out of high school - a nice pick up
Eric "The Elf" Morris was a 2-star West Texas midget not even on the recruiting radar or other schools
The remainder of the roster is significantly comprised of players never offered by the "old money" schools in the Big 12

can the man coach?
show me any coach anywhere at any school in the country who gets more out of his players
show me any coach anywhere in the country who has a more precisely executing team than his

Mike Leach is, bar none, the biggest difference maker amongst the NCAA coaching ranks

but let's let ourselves be frightened off because he's not in the mold of a traditional Tennessee coach. Meanwhile, we can watch his West Texas freckled faced midget cotton farming players beat the snot out of ranked opponents
