I stand corrected. Let's see if he can win his conference though, before annointing him. The guy has spent the last decade being reliably 8-4. If I wanted a guy with a fancy offensive scheme who built a program from nothing, got the most out of his players, but had yet to win a conference, then I'd go with Mangino, who has built a program that was absolutely dismal before he took over.
Please keep in mind that although he's vastly improved recruiting at Tech since his arrival, his rosters have been comprised mainly of 3 star recruits with maybe a couple of 4 stars thrown in.
Texas and OU's rosters are jam packed with 4 and 5 star players.
I remember seeing on tv, someone talk about giving a pregame speech to Tech's football team a few years ago. This was right before Leach came to Tech.
For some reason, the guy asked the players how many of them had offers from Texas, OU or A&M out of high school and one guy raised his hand.
The point being, Tech has historically been at a recruiting disadvantage in the state of Texas.
Things have changed a lot and Tech now wins the recruiting battles over A&M, but not yet over Texas and OU.
since 2005, against Texas and OU, Leach has a record of 3-4 with this year's OU game still to come
that's pretty dang good
remember in '05 when all the sports writers were incensed that Cal did not get a BCS bowl with 1 loss. They were relegated to having to play Tech in the Holiday Bowl. Tech waxed them
the point is, Leach's teams routinely beats A+ talent with B- personnel. Imagine what he could do with an upgrade in talent
one more point. His offensive system is an equalizer. It creates spatial advantages on the field that enables a perhaps less talented team to be competitive against a top flight team.
Now I believe that Tennessee will always be an attractive school to top recruits, but let's be honest, Tennessee is going to continue to have heavy recruiting competition from Florida, Georgia, Alabama and LSU for years to come. We can no longer go into the Atlanta area and just cherry pick the top talent.
in my opinion, we're going to need a system that serves as that equalizer like Leach's system does.
I believe that Leach has grown as a coach in that it's apparent that he now puts an emphasis on defense. He hasn't in years past.
The combination of his explosive offense and a solid defense would once again have Vol fans really believing that Tennessee could beat any team in the country any time
remember those days?
