Mike Leach (Texas Tech)

Mike Leach is at the top of my list. Good head coaching experience, plus he has always had prolific offenses. If you ever watch TT games, his receivers always get yards after catch. And the reason why is not just the receiver's individual effort, its the other receivers downfield blocking. His O line play gives the qb sufficient time to make his progressions. Each of these things are signs of a well coached team. That's why a team like TT, with less talent, can beat Texas and maybe OU this year.

I have a neighbor who is a Tech grad and I congratulated him on the Texas win yesterday. His only response was "The word in Lubbock is that Leach is headed to Tennessee"

No rumor starting, just a window into the psyche of TX Tech fans.

I've heard that here in Abilene as well.

Leave a program in the middle of the desert for the UT job in the mountains making $4 mil? Yes, he may consider it.

It would be a terrible decision. Plain and simple.

It amazes me how many of these experts on the coaching change have shown up today.

The guy being interviewed on the sports animal right now says that Leach wants the UT job...not sure how he knows that.

You might want to travel to West Texas sometime. There are mountains there higher than ANYTHING in the Smokies. Lubbock itself is over 4000 ft above sea level

Only reason he wouldn't is b/c Harrell and Crabtree are sophomores. If he doesn't win a NC this year, then he definitely will have a shot next year. i say he stays at TT because of that. I'd take him over any other up and comer (peterson, kelly, mendenhall, etc).

Uhh....Harrell is a 23 year old senior, and Crabtree is a redshirt sophomore who's going to be a top 10 pick in the draft. They're both gone.

I have no problem with Leach's style of offense, I'm just not sure he's the type of coach that Tennessee needs. He doesn't seem like the hard nosed, disciplined personality that i think this team needs right now.
Case in point are Meyer and Saban. Those teams are focused and an extension their Head Coach. Leach may very well be a good fit, I'm just a little nervous about him turning the program attitude around.

God, I have nightmares of seeing Stephens or Crompton trying to run this offense. Boyd doesn't want to play for a spread type, so I don't see him staying if we go with Leach, although he did confirm that he is still a Volunteer today.

I'd like to clear up a repetitive misconception about Mike Leach that I've been seeing here

first, I am a Tennessee grad and a Vol fan. My wife is a Texas Tech grad and I've also followed the Red Raiders since the Spike Dykes days. Tech is my second favorite team

Leach is a quirky fellow, no doubt. The misconception that I'm seeing however is an assumption that he is lax on discipline and runs an overly relaxed program.

nothing, absolutely nothing could be further from the truth

I am not sure that there is a coach anywhere in the nation who is more obsessed and fanatical about detail and execution.
take the time to read up on the guy a little further than the obligatory pirate articles and you will see this

I've seen every minute of every televised Tech game this season. I may be wrong, but when a Tech receiver dropped a ball in the 3rd quarter of the Texas game, I was thinking to myself that I don't recall seeing another dropped pass any time during the season.
Turn on a Tennessee game. Chances are, you'll see a couple of dropped passes in a single possession.
His receivers must catch or they do not play. And because of repetition and having thousands of tennis balls fired at their heads at 80 MPH, they ALL can catch

He will bench or suspend starter or stars in a heartbeat. He simply doesn't care who you are and he does not play politics.

anyhow, I just wanted to set the record straight on the perception that he runs a loose (pirate) ship. He's much like Coach Cut with regards to insisting upon execution.
Naturally, you can watch his offense operate and deduce this as well

that said, for many reasons, I believe he'd be the best guy for the job, but at the same time, for the sake of peace in my household, I wouldn't mind seeing him stay in Lubbock

i have mixed feelings about Leach. Can his offense work in the SEC? I think so but I cannot see it working consistently. Gotta be Physical and have a running game to be competitive in this league
Let that bunch they have now play against Bama or Fla and i think that you would see that they could easily put up 30 on them.

Thanks VOLTx. I really wasn't aware that Leach ran this tight a ship. My assumptions are loosely based on his demeanor in what little I have seen of him. If he truly is the disciplinarian that you say I think his offense would definitely work in the SEC and I would welcome him as a head coach.
Thanks for not attacking my post as well. I much prefer to be set straight by facts as opposed to being called out for my opinion. This makes for much better debate.
As someone with a little insight, are there truth to the rumors that he would jump at the Tennessee job?

Yor neighbor is wrong!!! I live here and that is not a consideration at this time. Not that I would mind Leach going to UT.

Yes, and Yes!!!....Thank you!

He does have a running game...he just has a very effective passing game that doesn't require him to run it all the time.

Very good information!...Thanks for posting that!...I would love to see Leach here at UT...I really believe he could be successful here...He would sure add some gasoline to the fire known as the SEC that's for sure...He could bring back the fear teams had when they played us years ago.
