Mike Hamilton is a genius - The Debate (merged)

Hamilton is a moron and should be fired posthaste without further adieu. I'm sure Dooley is a great guy; he may one day be a great HC. But he is NOT the caliber of coach we should have gotten. A top-ten program does not settle for someone from La Tech, even in a three-day search. I read another thread on here today talking about how a year ago Hamilton was quoted (I remember this) during the search that led to El Pricko saying that Tennessee is not as desirable of a job as a lot of the fans seem to think it is. That comment alone should have been enough to get him fired, then and there.

I said when Kiffin was hired that Hamilton had with the idiot's hiring sent a message that football was no longer a priority at this school. Then once jerkboy hired the all-star staff, I was on board and cheering him on; when they landed the top-ten class, I was drinking the kool-aid. Now I can see not that Hamilton had sent the message that football is unimportant, but rather the message that he's a blundering, incompetent, inept, hapless boob who couldn't sell a space heater to an Eskimo. FIRE HIM NOW. Don't even wait a day.

When Bama was getting rebuffed left and right three years ago, they dug in their heels, opened up the bank account and got the best college coach in the country. Muschamp, by all accounts, seriously considered us; who is it on but Hamilton that he couldn't get it done? It really takes a complete bozo to not be able to sell someone who's never been a HC, and doesn't know how long he may have to wait, and is going to have his salary nearly tripled immediately, and shows interest in the job - and yet Hamilton couldn't close him. Did Saban call Bama like Kiffin called 'SC? No. He insisted, emphatically, that he would not be the coach there. But their AD didn't take no for an answer - he got it done. A DC who's ALREADY EXPRESSED INTEREST tells our AD he's not sure, and our AD wipes his tears away and hops on a plane to go collect the next rejection.

Hamilton IS AN INCOMPETENT BUFFOON. FIRE HIM NOW.

Dooley acknowledged that if he had stayed with Saban (after being the longest serving Saban assistant ever) and gone to Alabama he would have been more attractive, but he would not have been as qualified.

Dooley is southern, he gets our traditions, he reached out to Majors and Fulmer and said how much he admires Neyland in one presser.

He said his family is excited to live in Knoxville! What a welcome change.

He said he will not be a trash talker...

I am proud of our new head coach and I am proud of our AD.
Put down the Kool-Aid. Hamilton is NO GENIUS. He's a bean counter...from Clemson. He was never here during TN's glory years...and as such he views this program as a low-mid tier SEC team, and his last 2 hires are clear evidence of that. Bama got tired of such hiring practices after over a decade of coaching failures. They were just mad enough and fed up enough to insist that their AD hire a Top Shelf candidate. 3yrs later, they win a NC.

Florida hired Urban Meyer, who had Utah playing lights out in their conference...3 NC's later we're still shopping in the Budget Bin. WTF, OVER?!!!! Dooley is massively underqualified, and should still be coaching at LT til he can show the ability to WIN...WIN...WIN ..WIN. We not after a coach because they talked a good game in the presser. We should be mad as hell...but I'm afraid it will instead take 3-4yrs of mediocrity before we start to come to our senses.

Clawson had the same qualifications, character wise...why didn't we call him back here? He had a better record as a HC at the same level. Why wasn't he considered? Why are we putting up with an AD that has twice reached for the low hanging fruit? I'm just getting sick of this...and for once I'm thinking that Fulmer as an AD is starting to make a hell of a lot more sense right now...though I'm no Fulmer fan. Maybe we can contact Heath Shuler...he's got plenty of qualifications to handle the job.

+1000 We need to paint the Rock..."Fire Hamilton. Hire Heath Shuler!"

We don't know that yet. Recruiting 4 and 5* athletes to LSU to play for Saban required little more than a list and a phone to extend the invitation.

Context man, context. When he was the recruiting coordinator for Saban at LSU it was not 2009. The LSU program was in bad shape when Saban got there. And Saban was not the superhero that he is now. He had been a decent coach at Michigan State but had not done anything special yet.

Dooley is incredibly more qualified than our last excuse for a head coach. Why dont you give the man a chance before you say he doesnt deserve the job? Jim Tressel never coached a FBS game in his life until OSU.....that turned out OK for the Bucks. Give him the benefit of the doubt before you judge him. Tennessee is NOT A TOP TEN PROGRAM ANYMORE!!! Some of our "fans" just cant get this through their heads. We were a decade ago, but not anymore. We play in the toughest conference in the country with absolutely NO in state talent to pull from on a consistent basis.....which is why it isnt "appealing" as some other places. I think we have a good man for the job. I will give him the chance to fail before I judge him like I am some expert. A lot of our fan base would do well for themselves to realize they KNOW NOTHING about running a major program successfully.

1. Tennessee is NOT as desirable a job as a lot of the fans think it is, especially right now. We're 20 scholarship players down and only three weeks until we risk losing most of a class. It's exactly like taking over a program on probation. When you have to play Meyer and Saban every year, and you're only going to have three years at most to win or you're going to be crucified. That's a tough sell to anybody.

2. You really don't think that, while Saban was publicly denying that he would ever be Alabama's coach, his agent wasn't talking with Alabama the entire time? Their AD didn't doggedly refuse to take no for an answer; their AD knew the entire time that as soon as the Dolphins' season was over, Saban would be coming to Alabama. They probably negotiated the whole contract while the Dolphins still had three games left on the schedule. Don't be naive.

We fit in famously with our AD then.

It's the state that produces the most NFL talent in the land and you're recruiting kids who grew up loving the Tigers. It's not that extraordinary. Let's not oversell that.

Let him demonstrate his recruiting prowess over the next two weeks. He has a real challenge on his hand. Save this class and I'll believe.

Dooley is smart enough to know that he cannot win us with a soundbite. He's going to make you believe when he shows his skills on the sidelines.

So you're saying getting embarrassed in BCS bowl games is ok? I guess it's better than getting poked in the eye with a sharp stick.

I'll be estatic if he achieves utmba's proposal.

back to the op point.

the get the great assistants and pay the hc less didnt really work out too great for us last time.

got us a 7-6 season a top 10 recruiting class and right back in the same situation

Also, I love how the OP thought this hire was genius, yet he forgets to mention we were on our 7th candidate.

I honestly do not think he was our 7th choice. I think like last time Hamilton had smokescreens. I think Dooley was the third choice after Muschamp and Lovie but neither were offered the job because they never got close to agreeing on money. I think long term that Dooley will work out better than either.

Cutcliffe was bandied about because Peyton and the Fulmer crew pushed for it. Thank God MH stood firm against them.

If we hired him last year instead of Kiffin there is 0 chance that we could have Lance Thompson as our DC. Now it is very possible as long as Lance understands that the yayo and the girls and the drinking is not going to be like it was under people who made Lance seem saintly.

MY GOD....You people have totally missed the point...Mark my word...we will be in the market for another HC soon heck, I give it 3 years...The man is barely a .500 coach and if he cannot beat the sec or acc or whatever teams outside the WAC why in the world do you think he can win at the helm of Tennessee, and don’t think he will bring home the top blue chips (cause actually no one really knew he existed) but that is what it takes to beat at least half the teams in the sec these players want to play for many reasons but at the end of the day they want to play for the talent of the coaching staff in hopes to maybe go to the next level or just simply to WIN games while playing...
He may be able to keep what LK brought to us as far as recruiting, and I say MAY...but I don’t see him recruiting the caliber players it will take to get the job done...Proof is in da puddin....and I will be GLAD to eat crow all day long but something tells me to put my fork away, I wont need it...

While I am not a big fan of Mike Hamilton, this hire will determine his job status. He will not get to hire a 3rd football coach. I hope Dooley can keep the staff and salvage some of this class. Hiring sons of great football coaches does not guarantee success as we all know, but Vince Dooley won with class at Georgia and I feel that we can at least expect the same from Derek Dooley. I would think he must be a good coach to stay with Saban as long as he did. Time will tell it always does. GO BIG ORANGE!

He will not get to hire a 3rd football coach unless Derek is leaving to try the NFL in 7 years after a great tenure, groomed assistants who have gone on to success and who would love to come back and take over and 2 SEC titles.

I am hoping his tenure is more like his dads and he is at UT for 20 years, but he loves a challenge. If he gets us to the top of the mountain I would guess he will leave not long after that.
