I have mixed feelings about the Brady thing.

Brady won most of his games at UM and was a very good college QB for sure. He also went through a very tough period at UM where he was buried on the depth chart and famously had to hire a sports psychologist to help him get over some issues he had.

He eventually was drafted in the 6th round, which seems pretty late for what I consider to be the GOAT (sorry Peyton). His experiences at UM could also have been what helped mold him, although not sure how much credit an OC deserves for that or not.

It is an interesting scenario to say the least

If Butch was a used car salesman, would DeBord be a 1989 Mercury with 189,000mi?
Would Butch say, don't worry about the milage, it was owned by my own mother and she only drove it back and forth to Bingo?
Would Butch say, O'Hel* they just don't build'em like they use to?
Would Butch say, hey, this Mercury drives out right, let's take'er for a spin?
Would Butch announce that we are adding a new member to our coaching family....our new old 1989 Mercury?

DeBord left Rocky Top between 1-2 Sunday afternoon.

While DeBord, we are told by folks on campus, left a very positive impression this weekend, as we noted late Saturday night Jones has continued vetting candidates.

In fact, Jones will be flying out to both recruit and conduct additional interviews in airports and other settings along the recruiting trail throughout the next 48-72 hours.

Mike Norvell is a name we've heard consistently and reported since Friday; but Norvell has a $900,000 annual salary per a USA Today report. Sources indicated to us that Norvell has indicated any discussions about a position would need to initiate with a seven-figure salary.

More names we picked up today include Mike Canada, the N.C. State offensive coordinator who just finished his second season with the Wolfpack.

Noel Mazzone, who has ties in the SEC after runs at Auburn, Ole Miss and in the ACC at N.C. State, is the offensive coordinator presently at UCLA but as noted above, has strong ties in the South and is on the list of candidates Jones and his inner circle are vetting.

Typically in these situations, a head coach will bring in his agent --- in this case, Jones is represented by Trace Armstrong --- to help facilitate conversations with potential candidates beyond just the initial texts and phone calls.

South Carolina's G.A. Mangus is a name that we've previously reported and one that has consistently surfaced across the course of the weekend.

North Carolina's Gunter Brewer is another candidate the Vols are exploring and could meet with in the next 48 hours.

Additionally, sources told us that Jones has spoken/will speak with 1-3 NFL assistant coaches.

Other names who have been confirmed by VolQuest.com to have been definitely vetted by Jones & his inner circle include Billy Napier, Josh Heupel and Seth Luttrell.

DeBord met with all of the Vols' quarterbacks, and then had an additional film session with Joshua Dobbs, who brought with him Marquez North. DeBord met with additional support staff.

Several NFL coaches and personnel people, as well as Urban Meyer among others, have reportedly reached out to Jones on DeBord's behalf.

Fit and continuity continue to be top-tier priorities for Jones in the OC search; he's very mindful of returning 10 starters and wanting to be able to utilize same terminology, system and more. DeBord has previous ties with Willie Martinez, Mark Elder, John Jancek, Don Mahoney and Steve Stripling.

While Zach Azzanni continues to be a name consistently mentioned on the short list of head coaching candidates at his alma mater, Central Michigan, where John Jancek also could be a candidate. If Jones can retain Azzanni, it would not be unexpected to see Azzanni elevated to something along the lines of passing game coordinator while Robert Gillespie could be in line to gain a promotion to recruiting coordinator."

Pretty sure he hasn't won 3 division titles, maybe the guy that was his boss did. If anyone possibly thinks this is a good hire doesn't know much about the modern day of college football. He is not a QB Coach, had Scot Loefler developing the QB's he called plays for. I compare that to Fulmer having Cut or Jordan having Pippen. I love Fulmer but without Cut he did absolutely nothing. It's amazing how one coach can make another look way better than he is and without him you see what he can really do. Would love to hear just a few positive things that he could possibly bring. Hell Norv Turner has Coached 20+ yrs and can you honestly tell me you think he is a good coach? Will hang up and listen. Honestly don't think this is the hire Butch makes unless he has others leave and hires a QB Coach.

I once had a discussion with a well known touring golf pro about golfers who were late bloomers like Ben Hogan, and players who were at the top of their game when they were young, and then faded away, like David Duval or Marty Fleckman.

Fleckman won the NCAA when it was in Knoxville at Holston Hills in 1965, then won his first tournament as a pro in 1966, then led the U.S. Open for 3 rounds in 1967, and shot an 80 in the last round, and really did nothing else. Or like Bruce Fleischer , who dominated the Senior tour when he first came out, but did zero when he was younger.

It was this pro's opinion that athletes and their games mature at different times. Maybe it's as simple as Brady was a late bloomer, although he was certainly not a bad college qb.

Disagree on CZA. It's night and day improvement from last yr that Josh Smith and Pig howsrd made. Croom played much better the times he was healthy. I do agree they do play soft at times, especially blocking and fighting for balls. Croom and North should have physical advantages on any corner and safety. J. Johnson played well when he was healthy. Biggest concern at WR is they ask the receivers to block a lot and more times than not they sucked at blocking.

1) My comment was about Lovie Smith. He won the NFC North Division title in 2005, 2006, and 2010.

2) I never said anything about Debord being a QB coach. That must have been someone else.

3) I don't know that much about Norv Turner, but situations and personnel dictate how coaches are viewed. I am sure that ownership, control over running the entire show greatly affects one's chance of success.

4) I think that Butch has an offense and a system that he feels is successful, and he will plug players and coaches into that system that he feels will make it work as designed.

Isn't Loefler the OC at Va Tech? No way he makes that move from OC to just QB Coach.

You funny OP. What a snow job. DeBord was here as a consultant, sounding board to an old friend, Butcharoo. If he was here for an interview, it was the longest interview in history. By this afternoon it would have been long over and he'd have gone home to talk to his wife. He's been the guy Butch can rely on as he looks for an OC. So we'll see.

You're right about the QB Coach but I was just saying there is no way we hire Debord and do make anymore hires. He is an Oline guy and not a QB Coach at all. So either Debord is hired and other changes or made to get a QB Coach in or they hire Deborg as maybe a Mahoney replacement or some kind of quality control coach. But I see zero chance Debord is hired as OC and them not free up a position for a QB coach to come in. Just seems much simpler to hire an OC who has run a similar offense and can coach QB's. Hell I would love to see Debord brought in to replace Mahoney.

Can't help but be amused as I watch several "posivols" here melt down.

I was taken to task by many of the same people for suggesting that things that had actually HAPPENED weren't good. So here we are and they are condemning Jones for a decision he might make... that could in time prove to be a good decision.

It is to laugh...

PS- Jones needs to hire the guy he believes in. He may just believe that an experienced OC with a NC to his credit that could finish his career as UT's OC in 5+ years might be a good choice.

I don't see the chemistry aspect here. Only Butch has worked with him on the offensive side of the ball. CWM was DeBord's DB coach for 1 year and DeBord and CSS were on the UM staff together for a few years. Maybe being on the same staff period is a good thing but I don't see an outside OC hire affecting the offensive staff chemistry anymore than DeBord considering no one on offense has worked or played for him.

Edit: looks like Jancek worked on his CMU staff for one year and Elder was a GA at UM for a year while he was there. So a lot of guys on staff know him, still skeptical that it helps on the offensive side of the ball where no one has worked for him. RT insider says Mahoney has but their career timelines say otherwise.
