Michigan Contacted CBJ per FootballScoop (merged)

Better job....Michigan or Nebraska? My vote would be for Ann Arbor...way better than Lincoln. However...u gotta beat Urban at least once every 3yrs.

We're 6-6 this year. The bowl game will determine if we have a winning or losing record this season. As I said before, I like Butch, but that doesn't scream raise to me. I'd hate to see him leave, but I'd hate even more to lock him into a long term deal before he's proven he can get it done on the field. Let's win more games before we start shelling out even more money. Haven't we overpaid enough coaches? Butch may be an excellent recruiter, but let's see him prove he has the X's and O's to go with that. A great football coach has to have both. He can't be one dimensional.

Again, assistant coaches generally have year to year contracts, so I'm not opposed to throwing a little more money into their cash pool. We need to stay competitive on that pay scale. But Butch hasn't built on his credentials enough to merit a raise, yet. Next season should speak volumes. Success next year will merit talks about raises and extensions.

If Butch wants to be here, then he'll stay and he'll keep building, and success will merit a raise. If Butch doesn't want to be here, if we're just a stepping stone to bigger things, then better to learn that now.

I hope we keep him. Butch is a good coach which will be a lot more evident next season with us finally fielding experienced, sec-level talent.

This is just something put out by his agent to garner a raise. PJ Fleck put out the same statement today. There no way Michigan is looking at a guy that has not had a winning season in two years.

Thanks man. I am a butch jones supporter guys. But... Just because some radio station or football scoop site says it. Jones was not 2nd contacted. Let's get serious. With hokes debacle michigan will go after big name. Jones like most coaches is using this as leverage for raise. Come on. Saban was really thinking about Texas wasn't he. That little fake rumor got his house paid off and big raise. And yes michigan has more in state talent than Tennessee. I bleed orange but Michigan is the winningest program in college football. But hell everybody on here is an expert I forgot

Michigan has a wide fan base, over into northern Ohio where I live. No way that version like our fan base would accept a lower tier, losing record coach.

Word up here is interim AD is going traditional, well vetted way of a search firm. Expect an aggressive, offensive guy.

If CBJ, for what he's done at UT, would be considered a credible candidate, then Michigan has really fallen down the tubes. Word up here is that Miles would be automatic pick then some guys out west. CBJ far down the list.

We are fortunate that CBJ has had a nice start at UT, but, he's just not YET anybody's pick at that level to compete with the Meyers.

I find this quote from a Scout article interesting. I hope ole Marcus is full of it.

Former Michigan Wolverine Marcus Ray who was on Jones' staff at Central Michigan.
"Michigan is a dream job for Butch," said Ray. I worked for him. He looked me in my face and said I would work there and where Rich was the coach there."

His dream probably changed after he observed RichRod's experience there.

I hate seeing so many damn typos in articles...

Just ask current Big Teb Betwork analyst

Really? You couldn't spend 5 minutes proof reading your own article? SMH :banghead2:

I think at the time he said it, that was probably true. Once a different marque team (UT) gave him the HC chance tho, I think he jumped in head first with a full commitment.

While his W/L ratio has not been so great his first 2 years here, ADs look at other things as well. CBJ is WELL RESPECTED for what he has done for our program, among pretty much every professional I have read. About the only place lacking real understanding and a realistic respect for what has been done is mostly here on VN. He has clearly shown he can build a PROGRAM, not just a team - that was every bit as much of a disaster (if not far more so) than Michigan is now. With his clear capability in recruiting and deep in state ties there, they would be foolish not to strongly consider him for the position - though I agree he would not be first choice.

The question I have is why would CBJ leave? UT is the type of program that you can build a legend around, with big money, great facilities and a large fanatical fan base. He is only in the second year of a major turn around, so he has taken the hardest blows already, with the likelyhood that it will get easier to get Ws going forward. Sure his pay is not where he hopes it will be but its hard to see him risking leaving UT for another $500k a year. And right now, no one is going to spend $5-6 mill a year on him. Granted, he is smart and so will entertain the hype in order to get some more money for himself and his staff but much like a true sophomore player, he will wait till his 4th year to maximize his stock in the draft.

And in 2015 if we go 8-4 or in 2016 if we are at 10-2 or better, we should be very seriously concerned if he is still at that pay level. But that is not going to happen. At that point, they will lock him in and up him to $5 mill a year range.

Seems you're biased against him if that comment bothered you in the least.

I'm not biased against him at all, in fact several would say I wear orange tinted glasses, but that comment was freaking ridiculous and he deserves any backlash he gets for saying it. It's harder for fans like myself to convince more skeptical Vol fans to believe what he's preaching when he rattles off nonsense like that.

Butch is respected by everyone but the announcers on ESPN and the NegaVols on VolNation

I guess we disagree what constitutes "nonsense"...if he takes the program to where we hope, others' definition will change also. "Best staff in America" didn't faze me and this?...even less. He reaches 10 wins and he can start talking about recruiting Martians. :alien:

it's all "coach speak". It's about positioning, branding, salary justification, power to retain assistants, etc. They are throw away comments (much like politicians) and we dismiss them as such and move on. We accept that of winning coaches. Patience slips always, though, without the Ws.

Of course, coaches, ultimately, what will determine their longevity.

I did laugh to read the "unless he goes to the NFL"; that was a good one.

CBJ would be just as successful if he worked for Fridgedaire.

I say they go after Saban just bc I'd love for him to be out of the SEC. I don't think it is very likely but stranger things have happened

If you want to argue that he's laying the foundation of a team, then fine. What gets me are the people thinking he deserves a raise or credit for his first two years. Butch's best asset is that he knows how to please the right people.

So you're going to skate over stellar recruiting to a 5-7 team, or that we started all new linemen on both sides of the ball, or that we played more freshmen than any other team in the country with the nation's 2nd hardest schedule. Forget the fact that we lost our WR core, MLB, starting LT, center, and even Hurd in the last game to injury and an off the field incident with AJ.

Yeah, let's blindly look at a record. Great logic.

Why in Gods good name would anybody WANT the Michigan job? If you think that Tennessee had high expectations the Wolverines are gonna want a National champion in oh, say, 3 years. And that with a 5 and 7 2014 season. It makes the Florida job look like a JC in oh, say, Maine.

This! The Big 10 area is in decline in population and certainly as a power FBS football conference. Leaving the SEC for a Big 10 job is a step backwards and for "my chest pain arrives when the competition heats up" nonhackers. CBJ is a competitor not a quitter.

common tactic to get a raise in sports--agent floats false rumors that other teams are interested in hiring your client --- team panics, offers big raise, coach accepts.
