Max Gilbert

The bottom line is that the margin for error in games against quality opponents is razor thin and every single point matters, big time. It’s the difference between us being potentially in the playoff and being 8-5. If I was the coach, I wouldn’t rip into the guy because what’s the point in that?
There's the big part of the problem with this team. Offensive line doesn't even try to block their guy until he hits the guy in the backfield. Defense takes the wrong angle on a tackle or tries to make an arm tackle on top of the shoulder pads, ball thrown perfectly to a receiver that isn't a fastball and he still drops it, kicker misses every meaningful kick. Do you see ANYONE getting chewed out? ANYONE? As I've said over and over Saban, Smart and Spurrier would meet them on the field and give them a royal tongue lashing then go over and chew out the position coach. I've seen them almost attack a guy in practice over not coming through with their assignments. Know why? Because it carries over into the games. We don't do that. No one is held accountable. The discipline IS NOT HERE.

Ok, so when you F up at work, I hope your employer puts it on blast, tells everyone, says you had one job, insults you and puts it all over social media…. Then fires you. How’s that?
Retired now but during my career nobody was paying $200 a ticket to watch me work. My boss cared if I screwed up but no fans were paying to watch. If you’re paying that much money to watch pros work, folks can certainly criticize if they don’t perform.

We should be looking at all our weaknesses and improving on them. Both our kicker and QB need to be replaced.
The QB was fine and we were lucky to get him when we did. And you could tell how much he and the offense missed Chris Brazzell. He was a security blanket if there ever was one.

I've never been able to move past the UGA game. I like the kid but he doesn't have it between the ears.

He missed 2 FGs in a row vs Bama LAST year too. Then lost us the UGA game and had a big part in losing to OK at home as well.

Never seen so much excuse making and blame passing BS on this board pertaining to ANY player as for Gilbert. He is the opposite of clutch. Has to go. He is a liability and was in 2024 as well in big games.

I am as big a CJH supporter as anyone on VN and an admitted "sunshine pumper"....if CJH has Gilbert kicking FGs next year then he needs to be fired.

I couldn't agree more brother. Like you said, he's a liability. Every time he walks on the field I get a little sick to my stomach. He's a head case and what's worse is he's regressing. When he missed that UGA kick that was pretty much the season. The team never recovered from it. I wish him well but he's got to go. Nothing good will come of him staying. Can you imagine if he costs us another win next season? He will be reviled, and Heup cannot allow that to happen

We were lucky to get any QB when Nico handcuffed us mid-year last year. We were never going to make the playoffs with Aguilar. Did he save our season? I guess so if you are satisfied with an 8-5 season with a loss to Vandy and Illinois.

I know kicking isn't easy but damn. He is the opposite of clutch and it wouldn't bother me at all if we have a new kicker next season.

It wouldn't bother you? Heck man, it wouldn't bother almost anybody. The fact that he was still kicking in important situations that late in the year makes me question the situation behind him or the reasoning skills of the coaches.

Not that it helps much but it wasn’t long ago that we were begging for 8 wins. It definitely could have been a lot worse if Joey hadn’t come on board. Don’t think Jake or GMac were winning 8 games.

It’s not about lambasting the guy. But if you consistently f up the 1 thing you’re paid to do, you’re gone lol. Not to mention the fact that this is Tennessee football, not some paper pushing job at Initech.

Can't lay the blame for any of the losses on Gilbert, though it's fair to say he didn't save games when he could, just like a lot of other players.

That just adds the kicker position to the list of positions needing upgrades.

If this was the NFL, he’d be cut. Period. Nothing personal. I’m sure he’s a good dude and nobody feels more terrible about it than him.

I agree we need to move on from Gilbert. With that being said, every freaking position player should be looked at also. The offensive line can’t protect, the defense can’t tackle to save their lives, we had overthrows and dropped passes. Every player needs to be evaluated and coaches also.

When your entire rosters is just paid mercenaries you can’t actually give tough love cause Gen Z will just bail and hit the portal. Kinda like Boo.

Why Saban retired. He knew true coaching was over. Smart can pull it off cause he is playing for championships.
