Max Gilbert

Also, everyone in the stadium knew they were going to drive the field. They could've easily scored but wasnt trying to. Actually, Tenn defense is SO BAD they couldnt even let them score.
You may be right, when they got to midfield i was saying let them score, so we will have time to score and win the game.

I’m not. I just think it’s silly to place the blame on one player when the whole team played like 💩.
Again you’ve got one job as a kicker and limited moments to do it. I’m not saying Max lost the game by himself but he’s sucked in a few big spots this year. He looks absolutely terrified on the sideline at times as well.

He has clearly put his job in play. Bet he is aware, and coaches are aware. No need for redundant classless shots as at a guy that is striving to be a VFL.

Now we can turn our attention to all the posters failing to display minimum levels of class and character and deservedly give them back what they gave. Just like missed FG, NO EXCUSES, including BVS.
Not sure if that's directed at me but no shots here. He seems like a good dude. Just seems to have a confidence issue or something and it's affecting him and his effectiveness. Definitely not ok to go berate him or anything.

Well we lost by one, had he hit the fg we win 31 to 30
Lost by 2. You can’t really think the game would have played out the EXACT same way if he hit a FG In the 1st half. Even if it did, Illinois had the ball 1st and goal at the six with 1:30 and a timeout. They knelt down twice to run clock and kick the FG. Our D was on the field the last 11:40 of the game. If Illinois WANTED and NEEDED those last 6 yards they would have gotten them.

They certainly wouldn’t have kicked a FG on the last play just to lose 31-30….

If you’re going to blame 1 play for “costing the game” it was the scoop and score. Just like Oklahoma.

Not that it helps much but it wasn’t long ago that we were begging for 8 wins. It definitely could have been a lot worse if Joey hadn’t come on board. Don’t think Jake or GMac were winning 8 games.
I respectfully disagree, the teams we beat this year, we should have been able to win with a qb managing the game and relying on the run. Did we beat any team with a winning record this year? I think we would have won just as many games with Mac, and if not Hype really missed on his evaluation of a qb.

Football is a game of momentums, it affects the whole team when something like a very makeable fg is missed, imo he cost us this game as well as the Ga game, and certainly didn't help us in the OKl game.

A missed fg in the middle of the 2nd qtr was the deciding factor? Would IL not have tried to score a a TD to end the game instead of taking knees to lock a fg?

It was a bad miss but absolutely did not decide the game
Thats's your opinion and you have just as much right to your opinion as i do mine. imo considering the momentum facctor it cost us the game.

We'll it's ****ing stupid to blame the loss on him but go on if it makes you feel better
Stupid in your opinion. It is stupid of you to think Gilbert is an asset to the team, he is a huge liability. He has never made a game tying or game winning fg in his career, they put that on the screen during the game. And he has had ample opportunities to do so. I do not have hate for Gilbert, he appears to be a nice young man. But he is not a good sec kicker.

Valid point, and well taken

Well, with that logic anytime something “bad” happens, the team is going to tank and lose the game. I think a scoop and score (costing you 7 points) would hurt “momentums” more than missing a FG (costs you 3 points). How did we ever even manage a lead in the 4th quarter after all that?

Scoop and score against Oklahoma (not to mention 2 INTs that led to 3 points each) lost momentum, game over. Pick 6 against Alabama. Don’t come back out for the 2nd half. I would hope the team is built of something more substantial fortitude than that….

Proving my point, we lost all those games.

I brought his up a couple of weeks ago and got a lot of sunshine being pumped Max's way. Dude, you only have ONE JOB. They can't hit you, run into you, or trip you on the follow through. Knowing that, your mind should be clear enough to make a clean kick. I caddied for my father for years, as a young man, and dad always told me "The game is in your head". Face it, Max has the yips.

But we didn’t just quit. We had a lead in the Georgia game after Max “lost it”. We led last night after Max “lost it”.

And the common player in all those other examples (plus the scoop and score LAST night), our turnover prone QB. Yeah, the kicker is a problem. One of MANY. But there is no way that missed kick cost us the game last night. It was one of many contributing factors but not even the most egregious (scoop and score).

i agree scoop and score was terrible.

So Max Gilbert is someone's child, brother, friend, whatever. He's a person. Some of you are terrible people and humans. I keep hearing how this is a Christian nation, but I don't see it. Carryon....

I thought Greg was good, i only remember one clutch he missed.
He missed 2 against Colorado and we tied. Missed against Auburn and we tied. Missed one and had GW FG blocked against Bama and we lost 9-6. Was 19-29 for the year in 1990. Tied 2 games and lost 1 due to missed/blocked FGs in a year we went 9-2-2. Not good.

Let's go pull someone out of a frat house. You can't tell me there aren't ten guys on campus that couldn't do better. Might as well go for it instead of trotting him out there to fail. Is our backup worse than him?? Is anyone worse than him? If I was the backup kicker I would just quit after watching all Gilbert's misses.
He originally competed with Turbeyville gor the job. Maybe we should give T another shot at it.
