Agree. He seems like a good kid but he failed when the lights got bright. Can’t have a kicker these days that can’t make kicks in the biggest moments. Take a look at the Ole Miss kicker last night. NFL leg and nerves. And a transfer.I never celebrate losing a player that isn’t a drama queen like Boo
That being said I’m not sorry to see Gilbert go. Honestly it was the best choice for both sides, he cost us at least three games this season with missing critical kicks and that’s just not acceptable at this level.
I hope he finds his place and does well where there isn’t so much pressure. But frankly both Tennessee and Gilbert deserve better than what they were getting.
God speed and God bless, let’s find a new kicker that can take the pressure
Yep. I think that's been the case since the transfer portal became a thing. If you're not growing your roster, you're staying the same OR you're not paying market value. Bang for your buck is how college athletic departments are going to be run from here on out. Even Vandy is in on it.Seems to me there have been a lot of closed door discussions with players and coaches in the last few days.
Max, like others, was likely told the program is looking for an upgrade at your position, so thank you for your contribution. If you want to stick around and try to earn playing time, good but there is a decrease in NIL money and such. If you want to explore options elsewhere, best of luck.
Coach Cafego enters the chatNot with kickers. A kicker’s success usually comes down to confidence. Max lost his, had a chance to get it back, and didn’t. From a coaching standpoint, it’s mostly mental and helping him to focus on the basics like alignment. After that, it’s all muscle memory. 80 % of every kick is the snap and hold. UT has a kid snapping at a sub .25 on 8 yards and he has had the same holder the last two year. Max needed the UGA kick to go through, he’d be having a completely different year, and so would the team.
AaaaaaaaaamenI’m retired now so it doesn’t matter but nobody was paying $200 for a ticket to watch me in my “lane”. And I was pretty dang productive over a 47 year career. These are paid pros now. If they don’t like criticism, find something else to do. Not going to listen to anyabout the poor little pros getting criticized.
But Max never went on TV and trashed his coach and QB (hence the “liquored up kicker” comment”) about the inability to “win the big game” then promptly went out and blew the GW kick in a “big game”. And as karma would have it, he was long gone the next year when they won it all!Gilbert was the highest % kicker in UT history, MV was during his time as well. However, both will be remembered for missing big kicks.
I know what you mean .... 47 years for me also. 6 years in the Air Force and then 41 years in manufacturing. Retirement feels good!I’m retired now so it doesn’t matter but nobody was paying $200 for a ticket to watch me in my “lane”. And I was pretty dang productive over a 47 year career. I hope we got one lined up.
Maybe a change of scenery will be good for Gilbert. I remember our punter David Leaverton having the shanks so bad in 1997, he was replaced by a walk-on (Hogue from Memphis Briarcrest). Leaverton got his head right and had a stellar performance during our natty season the following year. He probably would have it the portal after the 97 season if it existed then.
