Max Gilbert

I thought Greg was good, i only remember one clutch he missed.
IMHO, Greg Burke cost us the 1990 national championship. Missed game winning FG’s against against Alabama and Auburn. Also missed a FG in 31-31 tie against Colorado. That 1990 team was arguably the best team in UT football history. Maybe could argue that the 2001 team was close but the 1990 Strength of Schedule was of Olympian proportion.

We were ahead 19-0 at Auburn, but I agree. That's the best team, as far as talent across the board, I've seen at UT, with the 2001 a close second. Even after Webb got hurt, it didn't matter. Our backup led the SEC in rushing. Our WR group was the best in the country. Our OL was one of the best in the country. Our DEs were the best pair in the country. Our DB group was the best in the country. 12 of our 22 starters were starters in the NFL.

He missed 2 against Colorado and one prior to the potential GW against Bama that was blocked and rolled so far Bama kicked the GW……grrrrr.

Great points. Such generational talent on that team.

He needs to be encouraged to hit the portal. We can take a chance on a portal kicker. Gilbert has cost three games this year: Georgia, Oklahoma, and Illinois. Don't let this continue in 2026.
2 strip sack sixes, a defense not stopping any 3rd and 4th downs, trying to sit on leads and ignoring the clock would like to share a friendly “howdy”!

Assume the reference above is 1990? If so, agree. That could have been a Natty year. Talk about playing not to lose! Ugh. How on earth did that team not score more than 6 pts against Bama. Way too conservative that year without aggressively playing to win and close out games.

MV made some big ones too. Gilbert hasn't. MV went an entire season without missing a FG
Well, he made a FG vs FL last year that ensured OT giving us the chance to win. He made multiple FGs vs Ark and MS ST this year. If he missed those we don’t get to OT and / or don’t come away with close wins. Don’t get me wrong, I want our kicker to make 100% of his FGs as a fan, but it’s not like he’s NEVER been a contributor

Exactly…..

My mind struggles to grasp how a missed FG in the 1st half against OK “cost” (we were leading at the time BTW) us a 6 point loss when there was a “scoop & score” for 7 points (which also likely cost TN points as well since it was 1st and 10 at the OK 24) and 2 additional picks that led to 6 more? Seems like this loss would be on the QB’s 13 points off TOs If we are picking one guy to blame? You can blame 3 people on the scoop & score alone! Sanders missed the block, Joey didn’t protect the ball (wasn’t his blind side, he could have flopped down like Peyton) and Kitselman for “feeling up” the returner instead of actually tackling him.

Same with ILL a missed FG (3 points) is more “costly” than the scoop & score (7 points)? Someone earlier on this thread when challenged on the logic said “if he makes the FG, we win 31-30”. OK the game plays out the EXACT same way so ILL gets to first and goal at the 6 with 1:30 left in the game, takes 2 knees and then kicks a FG at the whistle to lose by 1 point? The same offense that kept ours from touching the ball the last 11:40 of the game will not punch it in given that that scenario? Mmmmkaaay…..

Bama was on a roll after an 0-3 start. Gene Stallings was their new coach. They barely lost to Georgia, Florida and Brett Favre. Their defense was by far the best unit we played in 1990. It was essentially the same defense that won the NC two years later. Regardless, if we make that FG, we win 9-6. That Bama game was a game where having a healthy Chuck Webb would have definitely made a difference.
