Matt Simms discussion (merged)

So if we win against Oregon and Simms throws 0 to 1 INTs, will you come back and bash him again?

He looks the part so far, he's a much better option then Bray at this point. He just needs to work on his TD celebrations.

Pointing out that he looked like John Elway against WKU isn't defending him. It was done to remind gibbs how someone can blow it against UCLA, Florida, etc after dominating an inferior opponent.

I just think it's easier to say that "Look what Crompton did, and he sucked" because we all have the evidence. I think you can take Simms' performance and render it positive, and not be forced to be worried considering what Crompton did last year. Simms is not Crompton.

The problem is, I didn't really think Simms looked very good. I feel like he should have, because even Crompton managed to pull that off.

Oregon's starting QB was only 13/23 last Saturday...I wonder if the Ducks are worried he doesn't look the part?

Actually, I think many of them are.... so...

I personally was impressed by Simms' performance. I thought he got some pretty decent throws off under pressure. (The fact that there was pressure from UTM worries me, but that's another story)

Of course, after reading on here from all the "negavols" for so long, I had low expectations.

I don't think he's gonna win the heisman this year, but I'm hoping he can keep us moderately afloat.

It was a boring gameplan against a boring team. It was a boring game. Simms is a boring QB to watch. Just kind of drops back in a lazy fashion....winds up...throws the ball.

Regardless, Simms had a couple of dropped balls by Stocker, a perfect pass to Moore in the corner of the endzone...But what's most important is that he had a handle on his team. I can't stress enough how important it is to have leadership at the QB position. Crompton didn't have that last year. It's the main reason he sucked.

This was Simms' first career start at UT. Crompton had been here for 4 years going into 09, and all we saw was bull**** from him. So when he throws 5 TD passes (2 in the 4th quarter), everyone gives him a pass. He also threw 2 INTs. His 21-28 performance allotted 233 yards passing. Which is ends up being a "dink and dunk" average.

I'm not ruling out that Simms could have the worst performance of his life against Oregon. But to say because Crompton "had a poor performance against (an awful) UCLA team so don't get your hopes up" seems kind of eh to me.

I didn't read through all of the posts but he worries me. He can make all of the throws but I'm not sure he can read the defense. I was sitting in the endzone and you could see him lock on and miss guys running wide open.
He is our best option right now and I hope he makes some big plays for us this weekend.

I'm going with Simms on this one. Not only does he look the part, this week his receivers actually begin catching more passes. It's time for our receivers to catch what they should as well as catch a couple of "How the crap did he get that?!?!" completions as well. Big boy ball this week so make us proud.

I thought Simms locked down on some of the guys as well at first. But after I watched the replays I really came to the conclusion that his primary receiver was just open. If you look at the play where Moore hits the end zone wall (which I think was a touchdown) you can notice that his primary receiver is NOT open and then he goes to Moore.
So it made me feel a little better to see this.
Obviously we will know more after this Saturday. Hope it's a fun one. GBO!

It was his first start, but if we were so vanilla it shouldn't have been that hard. I thought at least a couple of the Stocker drops were not well-thrown. He had a few more get away from him. The one long ball he completed would not have happened against an SEC defender. I didn't think he looked too great. I certainly wouldn't say something as stupid as "Simms was nigh on spectacular" or that "compared to Crompton he looked like Manning".

I don't think I bashed him at all. Just pointed out the obvious and asked a question. He had better improve this week---I think many fans are overlooking the fact that Simms is a Junior---not a Freshman making his first start. He should be better-----imo. Now I am starting to bash.

I have invested in multiple antacids sense he has become QB. Just the last name alone has frightened me beyond believe. I just hope this average person of a QB proves that I'm a deek and he just becomes Manning overnight...sorry guys but the name Simms makes me sick to my stomach...his brother was a wanna be QB for the Titans, and all he did was screw up.

do the following people fit your, "look the part" gimmick:

Josh Huepel
Ken Dorsey
Matt Flynn
Greg McElroy
Chris Leak
Tee Martin

Let Simms play a game that he doesn't lead his team to a 50-0 win before we really get down to the criticism. You're worried about footwork.

His brother beat out Major Applewhite for a starting QB job. Chris was tough as hell. Phil won a superbowl and is an awful commentator. What is wrong with you people.

A little late to the party, but I didn't think he looked that great. Inconsistent accuracy, didn't like his release or footwork. Managed the play clock well, though. Didn't make game changing mistakes (albeit against UTM).

Overall, he won't be as good as Crompton last season, but better than 2008 Crompton, by a long shot.

Still, pretty average QB right now.

What made Crompton so good last season? Just curious.

FWIW, I'm not in either camp yet. UTM proves nothing either way.

It leaves some concerns but doesn't really answer or decide any.

After the Auburn game, he was the second best QB in the SEC.

What?! UGA, and the last drive of Bama. I'll give you that. Other than those two, what'd he do? He was just there. He made no impact. He was never a leader, he didn't elevate anyone around him, and this is just me, but I think his "work ethic" was overblown.
