Matt Simms discussion (merged)

as soon as our young line lost confidence in simms, well, you know what

if people start trying to make some comparison to crompton at the beginning of last season, and that simms can turn it around, please just save yourself the grief and face reality... there is a reason why people can't make it at louisville, can't do much in juco (community college), and how in the world did he end up here?

the coaches were trying their best not to burn bray's redshirt. now we won't see him until uab

After tonight, I believe Bray just needs to suffer through a baptism of fire this season and mature so he is ready for next season. Simms obviously lacks the ability to even simply manage a game and lacks the arm strength to stretch the field. Bray needs to grow up this year with his young OL and WRs so next year isnt a repeat of what this year is doomed to be - a solid defense that can keep you in any game but a sputtering offense that cant score enough points to win. Take your lumps now with the rest of the team so you dont have to next year.

well he did have an interception, if I recall went for six, put them up by 14. not impressed with simms. had some poise but poise doesnt show up in the stats. But he would not be the starter if he wasn't the better choice, I don't see where he feels he has the strong arm though. But he can be a trent dilfer type. manage but don't give the game away.

Simms was nigh on spectacular on Saturday, especially considering I've gone pale every time a UT QB dropped back for a pass the last two years.

He's got moxie, and he made good throws. This week, he gets to open up the playbook. He's going to lead us to a TD in the fourth this weekend to take a 20 - 16 lead and win the game.

LIAR! I lost $300 because I placed a bet on the credibility of this post!

I'll take Simms hands down.

I don't think Simms has a toolkit like JC, but he is definitely managing the game better, making fewer mistakes. There was one bad throw, but neither the ground nor the cheerleaders have been abused. I think Chaney still has "Crompton Fever" though, and is afraid of the middle of the field.

The more I review Saturday, the more I feel the loss of Gerald Jones was immense. I think if G Jones plays, and we get 10 G-Guns, I think it's a ball game. I really think the G-gun would have been worth 7 - 10 points and a couple of critical 3rd down conversions (not just G-gun but as Simms' favorite target too). It would have totally changed the complexion of the game.

We collapsed when we got behind. Unfortunately, a stark reality for the is team this year. We've got to make sure we don't fall behind teams and handle adversity better. And our depth is such that losing one player on offense was critical.

Id take Simms although Im not impressed with him yet. The comment about chaney being afraid to go to the middle doesnt reflect routes ran by the receivers, i counted five plays where stocker was begging for the ball all alone in the middle field. Simms seems to be focused on one receiver and never looking at another option. All the checkdowns and 5 yd hitches arent gonna work hes gotta get his eyes up.

There was more than one bad throw. He tossed another that was a surefire pick 6 if the DE doesn't bat it down before it got to the DB. He also overthrew several receivers. I'll take Crompton, as long as I get Chaney coaching him and an OL coach other than Greg Adkins.

I don't think it was the handling of adversity so much as we got so tired that we couldn't keep up. Thus, we kept getting burned for big plays.

Ouch.

I tend to be a homer on this board, and post real feelings about the game in the Around the NCAA board. I don't want to be a negavol here (or "reality based Vol" - whichever you prefer.) This is the forum for discussion, dreams, aspirations. I will probably never predict a Vol loss here. I don't like to face the reality of it.

Should have sent me a PM. Sorry about your loss.

PS - I'd still take Simms over Crompton '08, and if we opened up the playbook, some of the pages were stuck together. Especially if it concerned throwing in the middle of the field.

Simms was terrible in JUCO and his extremely brief tenure at Louisville this being said

Crompton(even during his incrompetence) > Matt Simms

Crompton was more mobile and from what i've seen has a better arm even thought they talked up Simms arm. Crompton was and still is a pro prospect, Simms came from a juco college and we were the only school to offer him. So i'd take Crompton.

Still it isn't fair to judge the kid on two starts and the people calling him trash have no class or are very immature. It took Crompdaddy 4 years to stop throwing wormburners.

Something that JC and MS have in common..balls being batted down at the line of scrimmage. It's un-nerving.

I'm already shocked at the responses in this thread. Life is made more rich by surprises.

Simms has by no means lit it up, but he is WAY ahead of Crompton 2008 (and early 2009 IMHO). Crompton always had more potential, but if it was about potential alone, then there is no doubt - we play Bray starting today in practice.
