And this is the thing that really irratates me about the news media when something tragic like this happens they're more concerned about being 1st on the scene, trying to beat anther station to the punch, than getting the information out, especially when they're worried family and friends out there whether their loved one are safe.

I understand your frustration on that, but that's just not their role in this. They want to be first and often accuracy is the price paid.

I am told by text that CNN says the guy had to reload several times. Don't know the gun type.

There was a shooting and they notified people via . . . e-mail??
That was topped only by the person telling that story by them saying they weren't "alarmed" by the thought of a gunman on campus.

You severly underestimate the use of email as a communication tool by college students today. I check my mail pretty much continuously throughout the day, and most students now have phones with email/texting/instant messaging, or blackberrys/palm pilots, and many use them, or laptops with wireless internet in class.

I'm not saying the announcement shouldn't have been bolstered by PA announcements or...but its definately easier and quicker to email an emergency message to a listserv (email list of all student and faculty email accounts) than try to call 26,000 students and faculty.

My biggest concern is what happened during the TWO HOURS between the shootings? Why weren't students kept on lockdown or more emergency measures taken after the first incident?

I know I said that we could hold off on the gun debate sure to grow out of this, but just had to note that on Drudge it says that Bush's spokeman announced that Bush extended his sympathies to the people of Virginia and that he believes in the Second Amendment but that all laws should be followed.

Ok, great thought there Mr. Prez. And nice to see the defense already getting lines up. I'm reading that the guy did reload and went from dorm to classroom and that he was looking for his girlfried. May even have been a student there. Obviously, not dealing wiht a rational individual. You can bet your last dollar that there will be a HUGE gun debate come out of this and that if he owned the gun legally there's going to be some real push for reform, at least in ?Va.

What will it be? Don't sell guns to crazy people? Don't sell pistols?

I wonder if these bomb threats they have been talking about will be related to these shootings.

when a reporter asked one student how he felt with last year's shootings, the recent bomb threats, and today's shootings, the student said "it's kinda disturbing."

I imagine that any relationship to the bomb threats will be a hot topic of investigation.

Can you imagine being the parent of a student at Va. Tech. and not able to get them on the phone right now?

It's been said on both Fox and CNN that he was looking for his girlfriend.

both CNN and Fox are still claiming that the shooter is dead but "unidentified." Seems like speculation, at the least, to suggest that this was all over a girlfriend.

We actually have a couple of ex-patients that now attend Va Tech. Recently learned that both are well and accounted-for. One is actually a resident of the dorm floor where the first shooting occurred.
