Massacre at Virginia Tech

Making guns illegal is not the answer and is as bright of an Idea as deep sea diving without a bell.....

Guns are illegal in England.....Funny thing is every criminal there has one

Making guns illegal only affects 1 group of citizens...The law abiding ones

Funny how they almost never have any school rampages in the UK either, isn't it? The guy in Scotland was over 10 years ago. Meanwhile, we have several of these things a year over here.

I wouldn't be in favor of a blanket prohibition on gun ownership in this country. But does it really need to be possible for one of these guys to buy semi-automatic weapons and enough ammunition to fight a small war?

"Semi-Automatic" belongs in the liberal gun banning halls of Evil Sounding, much like "Assault Rifle". As terrible as this situation is, it's a shame that we are on a political/constitutional debate so soon...

Agreed. If one gun gets banned it will snowball into nonsense.

A shotgun and a Kalashnikov (to throw out a deliberately exaggerated example) are not the same thing. I think there's some room for common-sense discussion about what kind of weapons we want to allow the public to buy, and how easily we want to make it for people to get them.

And of course it's a topic of conversation. When a college kid is walking around campus with enough firepower to blow away dozens of people, I think it's entirely reasonable to be interested in how he got that weaponry, and whether there are things we ought to be doing differently as a society to prevent that person in that situation from having it at his disposal.

The you tell me what one of these guys look like, act like and think like.

Its a typical response to ban guns the same as ban computer games, it's a blanket statement that doesn't apply...What does apply is the failure of society and the failure of parents to properly raise their children.. part of the blame goes to the federal and state Governments for the liberalization of school policy and the removal of padding in schools and spankings in the home.

Funny thing is 50 years ago you didn't have this going on and there was more guns.

I own 50 handguns, 30 rifles and 6 shotguns yet I have never killed anyone.

I live in Richmond, about 2 and 1/2 hours northeast of Blacksburg, and there really has been an eerie calm around; numbness and devestation. VATech culture is heavy in this city, and this part of the state is much more Hoakie than Cavalier. Over the 3+ years my family has lived here, I have spoken with so many parents of Tech students - it seems easily the great majority of young people here talk of attending Tech, and I really feel for all of those parents today. Every parent of one of those students was surely (or will continue to be) in absolute hell until personally seeing their kid again.

Common sense rarely applies to the shooter or the ones talking about gun control.

I'm not against private ownership of guns; I have a handgun in my own house, for chrissakes. I just think it's reasonable to ask whether there are certain classes of weapons that it's reasonable to either keep out of the public's hands, or make very difficult for people to obtain. If this jackass today had been walking around with a couple of revolvers, there'd be a lot fewer than 32 people dead right now.

I agree with you for the most part, but get some nutjob in there that doesn't want private ownership of guns and the banning will never stop.

How's this? If somebody with a carrying permit (not sure of VA's laws) would have been allowed to have their gun on him, then the problem would have been solved before 32 people died.

This is, unfortunately, true of our political process in general. It's probably a result of our two-party system, but everything gets locked into a false dichotomy of everything or nothing, demonization of opponents, etc. You're either in favor of going house to house, taking guns away from people, or you're in favor of unfettered, immediate access to every kind of weapon shy of a rocket-launcher. Most Americans are neither.

My sympathy goes to all the victims of this senseless act especially to the families of those who were murdered. I can't comprehend this no matter how many times it happens....I want to direct my rage at someone but he is dead so I can only pray for the families and the recovery of the wounded. God Help Us to forgive but it is very hard. Unfortunately, there are those among us who do not value human life and who cannot handle rejection or disappointment. There are different kinds of terrorists and we are all at their mercy until we find ways to detect them.

I know and it sucks. Automatic pistols really have no place in society except on a cop's belt.

Talked to my girlfriend's sister tonite who went to VT and still lives in Blacksburg. She said most businesses are shut down and they are debating how to finish the rest of the semester. Sad, sad stuff.

Do you even know the difference between and Automatic weapon and a semi-automatic weapon. Your statement indicates you don't.

Ok then you tell me how to remove all guns from society.... You can't, its impossible therefore I will NOT give mine up

In light of today's events there is no reason to blame gun makers, video games, tv or rap music. Those are just cop outs for politicans and others to place the blame. A fellow deputy's niece goes to VT and is in the dorm next to where it all started today. He's on his way to Virginia now to be with his family. There will be alot of blame to go around for this from security down and we may never know all the answers. It's pathetic that other schools around the country are recieving threats now, this world has gone to hell.

I just heard on one news outlet that the shooter could be an exchange student from China, and the bomb threat last week was possibly made by him, to test the emergency response for this attack. Really horrible and I pray for all the victims and their families.

Buddy, I'm the biggest believer in people's rights to own guns on here. However, a semi-automatic pistol (technically there are no automatics that you can legally get your hands on) really has no use to the vast majority of society.

What do you need one for? Personal protection is all I can think of. When BS like this happens, it makes me want to scream because it sets back responsible gun owners.

I've hunted my entire life. I own 2 shotguns and 3 rifles. I can hunt with those. Now tell me why I need a self repeating pistol?

That's what started me on this. You cannot bar handguns because you disagree with owning them. It would not stop there. Some nutjob would eventually ban everything. And it sucks.

I've also heard this. It's becoming a very popular thing to do these days. Call in a fake/test threat a week or few months before you plan your attack to test response times and reaction. The killers are becoming very planed out and prepared, now we have to be one step ahead of them if possiable.

See, here we go with the absolutist stuff. Because it would be impossible to remove ALL guns from society, then we somehow can't even talk about reasonable restrictions on sales of new guns?

Life is not all or nothing, despite how the gun lobby acts about it.
