They now say that after the first shooting, he went to his room, reloaded and left a note. Haven't heard what was in the note. He was a student, so he could have gotten into the buildings even though they were ID Card protected.

I guess Sun Tzu was way off then in his own assessment of how humans will face a situation in which there is no way out save to fight?

I am going to have to say that our pure survival instincts have been taught out of most Americans. Or, maybe I am wrong in not classifying the following as a survival instinct:
Lining up against a wall and waiting to be shot.

The hard part for me is we dont know anything really about how all this went down. I wasn't there, I just hear reports from the horror struck students that were there. Some resisted by barracading doors, some were paralysed with fear, some thought it was a "joke", the entire situation was chaos and college students are not all trained to handle that level of violence on any day, much less the end of the semister. I don't blame the students in that situation at all, the only blame I have now is on the shooter. Truly a horrible act by one person.

I heard them say there were a couple of bombs threats last week at VT. Now they are speculating the bomb threats were testing how fast police would respond. Then the local news reported a bomb threat at UT yesterday aternoon. I hope and pray there is no connection. My thoughts and prayers are with the VT students, families and community.

Well seeing what actually happened, I'd say Sun Tzu was off. Funny how actual events disagree. I'm more for fact and modern events than someone speaking of events in another age. Call me contemporary.

And being taught out? You must have missed violence on TV, video games, etc. Not seeing "taught out" with kids playing Grand Theft Auto. Actually I think a more cavalier behavior is being taught IN.

You must have missed the violence that was witnessed daily by humans before "contemporary man" made his presence felt in this highly commerical and modernized society.

Just 100 years ago, most Americans had seen their food killed (whether deer, chicken, cow, etc.) on a regular basis. I would say that is much more effective in rearing someone to kill out of necessity than are video games, in which killing is simulated, and no actual human needs depend on the act.

I enjoyed your overly trite argument though.

I guess paper targets are not simulated? I guess a bull's eye to practice in archery is not simulated as well? A hundred years ago most people lived in cities and the food they received was already dead when they received it.

After a great deal of tolerance on my part, therealUT's handling of this catastrophic event has earned him yet another addition to an "ignore list."

Again, let's try to grieve for those involved and quit pointing fingers, especially when they are at people's children who were senselessly and brutally murdered yesterday. God bless all affected by the tragedy.

I guess the US Census Bureau got that wrong then. They have 60.4% of the US Population in 1900 living in a rural setting. In 1910, they still reported that 54.4% lived in the rural US.

You should probably let the Census Bureau know just how wrong you are.

Actually if you do research and even check with the Census Bureau, you will also find out that a significant number of people in our country were not even documented by the census. Check with the Bureau. They will verify that these numbers are not factual and that there is a flip between rural and urban. Many immigrants pouring into the urban centers were not documented. I know this for a fact because of my own research in this field.

So wise guy, let the Census Bureau know you only used PART of their info. Helps to research the whole thing rather than pick and choose your items.

I will use the facts provided. Feel free to offer actual evidence that enough Americans (hence citizens) were missed by the census to throw off the census by greater than 10%.

Again feel free to do some research. if you want to just pick and choose rather than spend time getting the full story, fine with me. Sorry but again as in other issues I choose to actually do more than clip a sentence to match my beliefs. Believe what you want.

You can look at census records to see in rural areas people were double counted due to where they worked and where they resided. Many children were grouped with parents in one case and other family members they visited in other cases. I will refer you to actual census documents themselves to see this as proof. I don't expect you to take the time to see this firsthand and fully expect you to continue this pattern. Stick with the half-truths. Best of luck.

They are online. Go to Ancestry.com. They have all of them available to view. Spend some time browsing and doing research. Go to your library. Most have census documents on microfilm. Or go to your closest National Archives. See for yourself and even speak with the specialists there. They will be happy to confirm what I've said.
