I was one of those in the Bring Back Bruce camp. I didn't sign the petition because I am too paranoid to sign stuff like that...haha.
I was even stupid enough to say if the Vols made the Final Four I would rather have Pearl....man, sometimes we say really stupid things without thinking them through fully.
Of course all of this is easier to say with Pearl off the market...which I think speaks to a thread I started a week or so ago. Pearl being in the picture clouded everyone's vision with nostalgia.
With Pearl out of the way, it is much easier to see our present situation. Cuonzo inherited a mess (and a depleted roster). Yes, he has underachieved to some extent the last two regular seasons. Yes, I am still a little skeptical going forward. However, I hope Cuonzo gets a nice extension and raise. I am becoming more of a believer that he is what we need. He seems to be an awesome human being. It is clear the players love him. Sure he signs some guys that don't pan out...but he also signs a Josh Richardson and Armani Moore who have been keys to this run.
Here it is...I was wrong. I am proud Cuonzo is our coach. He may not make the tournament next year...but I'm on board for giving him at least two more years.
now that was therapeutic!
i wasn't going to to do this because i did not want to throw water on tennessee's run, but since we have all these "apology" type threads i think it needs to be said.
you don't judge anyone by a game or two. you judge things based on whether or not you like the future and direction of the program.
so, the question is does a win over iowa, massachusetts and mercer change where you think the future of tennessee basketball is headed?
i'm just asking the question.
because, one can easily make the argument that while reaching the sweet sixteen is impressive....just where the hell was this all year long? why was this team a legitimate bubble team at risk of not getting invited to the dance?
tennessee isn't kentucky with a bunch of freshman that needed to grow up.
this team is lead by juniors and seniors.
imo, everyone should be thrilled by advancing to the sweet sixteen. but, i wouldn't let a win over mercer erase the memory of a lot of inexplicable poor play throughout the season.
Bingo. There was plenty reasons to criticize Martin, so I don't think anyone needs to apologize for that. But some of the numbnuts on this site (including one who's already posted in this thread) are the ones that need about 3 plates of crow.
Also funny how most of them haven't been around lately, and if they have, it's like said poster in here, just stirring the pot more.
should this Tenn team beat those teams, regardless of who the coach is?

Just stop, we are in the sweet 16. Enjoy it.
I am enjoying it. But I am also realistic at the same time. This team had the talent to play this well all season and they did not, way too often under Martin its been bad offense, I refuse to act like 3 wins vs. average opponents erases all that. They beat Michigan my opinion of him could change but as of this post I don't think he is a good coach, I don't want him back next season. But I know he will be and probably with a raise and extension.
The regular season no longer matters man, and CCM can't control the teams we play. You can call them average if you would like but we still beat them by an average of 17.
Ask Coach K and Duke how they feel about Mercer.

Come on, you know Duke is better than Mercer. Upsets happen every year. In a single game elimination the better teams doesn't always win and that's what makes this time of year so exciting. Can we agree on that?
Some guys can't admit they are wrong...that's a sign of weakness and insecurity. You may not be wrong in the long run (Cuonzo may not get it done over the next couple of years)...but in the short term...in the now...a whole lot of us were wrong. It was just plain irrational to call for a coaching change before the post season tournament (because college bball is all about the tournament). At this point it is pretty embarrassing every time the announcers talk about our fan base and how we were calling for Cuonzo to be fired. We look like lunatics...which maybe more accurate than we want to admit...haha
