Martin really isn't that bad

It's kind of ridiculous how knee jerk and fickle our fan base is a lot of the time. The majority of UT fans wanted Cuonzo out of the picture entirely a mere few weeks ago. It's annoying.

I was one of those in the Bring Back Bruce camp. I didn't sign the petition because I am too paranoid to sign stuff like that...haha.

I was even stupid enough to say if the Vols made the Final Four I would rather have Pearl....man, sometimes we say really stupid things without thinking them through fully.

Of course all of this is easier to say with Pearl off the market...which I think speaks to a thread I started a week or so ago. Pearl being in the picture clouded everyone's vision with nostalgia.

With Pearl out of the way, it is much easier to see our present situation. Cuonzo inherited a mess (and a depleted roster). Yes, he has underachieved to some extent the last two regular seasons. Yes, I am still a little skeptical going forward. However, I hope Cuonzo gets a nice extension and raise. I am becoming more of a believer that he is what we need. He seems to be an awesome human being. It is clear the players love him. Sure he signs some guys that don't pan out...but he also signs a Josh Richardson and Armani Moore who have been keys to this run.

Here it is...I was wrong. I am proud Cuonzo is our coach. He may not make the tournament next year...but I'm on board for giving him at least two more years.

now that was therapeutic!

I feel the same way. I should go start a thread about it.

i wasn't going to to do this because i did not want to throw water on tennessee's run, but since we have all these "apology" type threads i think it needs to be said.

you don't judge anyone by a game or two. you judge things based on whether or not you like the future and direction of the program.

so, the question is does a win over iowa, massachusetts and mercer change where you think the future of tennessee basketball is headed?

i'm just asking the question.

because, one can easily make the argument that while reaching the sweet sixteen is impressive....just where the hell was this all year long? why was this team a legitimate bubble team at risk of not getting invited to the dance?

tennessee isn't kentucky with a bunch of freshman that needed to grow up.

this team is lead by juniors and seniors.

imo, everyone should be thrilled by advancing to the sweet sixteen. but, i wouldn't let a win over mercer erase the memory of a lot of inexplicable poor play throughout the season.

Hey Gator! Don't be coming in here being all rational and sh**. We don't cotton to that crap around here!

There was plenty reasons to criticize Martin, so I don't think anyone needs to apologize for that. But some of the numbnuts on this site (including one who's already posted in this thread) are the ones that need about 3 plates of crow.

Also funny how most of them haven't been around lately, and if they have, it's like said poster in here, just stirring the pot more.
Bingo.

Criticism was fine, but some people took it to a whole new level.

should this Tenn team beat those teams, regardless of who the coach is?

Should Duke have beaten Mercer? Should Villanova have beaten UConn? Should Kansas have beaten Stanford? Should Creighton have beaten Baylor? Should Wichita St. have beaten Kentucky? Should Syracuse have beaten Dayton?

Good lord give it a rest.

I hear ya...just love all the board police...it's Freak's board...if he wants to merge...then go for it.

The regular season doesn't matter as long as you make the dance. That's where the wins count.

Most were skeptical of Martin because they believed he would fail to make it and of we did scrape our way in he wouldn't be able to make any noise.

However, this team found a way in, and as managed to go on a nice run. Some are still questioning CCM because of the teams we have played, for one that is not his fault, secondly it's not like they are squeaking by those teams, they are dismantling them.

So would I have liked a 25-30 win season, obviously yes. Did we lose some games we shouldn't have? Of course. Does that matter now? Not at all.

It wouldn't have mattered if we went undefeated in the regular season but were 1 and done in the dance.

A sweet 16 were most posters on here's expectations and CCM met that, so what more can he do?

Just stop, we are in the sweet 16. Enjoy it.

I am enjoying it. But I am also realistic at the same time. This team had the talent to play this well all season and they did not, way too often under Martin its been bad offense, I refuse to act like 3 wins vs. average opponents erases all that. They beat Michigan my opinion of him could change but as of this post I don't think he is a good coach, I don't want him back next season. But I know he will be and probably with a raise and extension.

The regular season no longer matters man, and CCM can't control the teams we play. You can call them average if you would like but we still beat them by an average of 17.

Ask Coach K and Duke how they feel about Mercer.

Come on, you know Duke is better than Mercer. Upsets happen every year. In a single game elimination the better teams doesn't always win and that's what makes this time of year so exciting. Can we agree on that?

Martin is still a mediocre coach and still shows his limitations as coach. However, I am most definitely enjoying this fun while it lasts as nothing is better than a deep run by your school in the Tourney. This team, a Sweet 16 talented team from Day 1, is finally motivated in the manner they should've been (whether self- or coach-motivated is up for debate) and they are hitting their shots.

So, am I happy? Without question, yes. Am I impressed by Martin? Eh, so so. I remember Jerry Green doing the same thing, plus Stan Heath getting to an Elite 8, neither of whom were great coaches.

In the end, I'll just enjoy this ride, but Martin isn't the solution for our future.

Bullcrap. They beat Michigan, you'll say "Beat UK/Louisville and I'll like you."

I would ask them, but I'm not sure I would be able to understand them through the sobs.

People remember what you did in March. It's not like Martin was 12-17 and had to win the SECT to get in.

Some guys can't admit they are wrong...that's a sign of weakness and insecurity. You may not be wrong in the long run (Cuonzo may not get it done over the next couple of years)...but in the short term...in the now...a whole lot of us were wrong. It was just plain irrational to call for a coaching change before the post season tournament (because college bball is all about the tournament). At this point it is pretty embarrassing every time the announcers talk about our fan base and how we were calling for Cuonzo to be fired. We look like lunatics...which maybe more accurate than we want to admit...haha

Maybe you can remember this when football season rolls around.
