Marlin Lane

This. Poole's run that was nearly a TD was pretty noteworthy.

Yeah...but Lane scored twice and gave more effort than Poole. Lane had to be dragged down everytime. Poole danced around and wouldn't hit holes

Everyone always thinks the new guy is better. Lane may be better but Poole is a good SEC back with a 1,000 yard season under his belt. Lane is a freshman with 37 yards total for his career. Get real people.

He's just an average "SEC" back. Look at it like this, how many teams would he start on in the conference?

the lone time he didn't ended up in a safety.

I stand by my comment. Fielding a punt inside the ten has been and always will be a no-no at any level for me. More bad than good happens when it is done. The fact that they fielded one at the one and our left guard blew an assignment does not change my opinion on the matter. Marlin is a good player, nonetheless. PA announcer just needs to learn his name now. (Marion, sheesh)

It's obvious that it didn't show in the stats, but it's there. Every time Lane got the ball, I felt like he'd get 5+ yards. I never felt that way with Poole.

If only how you felt about a running play had anything to do with how well it would work.

Poole will carry a lot of the load this year, but mostly it'll be softening up the D. Lane will hit the same holes and break some big ones.

If Poole had Lane's speed, he'd have run for 1,300 yards last year.

Stats don't reflect second effort. Had Poole given it, it might have prevented a safety. Lane gave it, and it resulted in a touchdown.

Poole reminded me of Jamal Lewis in his final season, going down on first contact every time. Lane fought like a mad dog for every inch.

Funny, Jamal came to mind when I was watching Poole, too. I mentioned it to some friends to say no one remembers how lame Lewis ran at times in his last season at UT. They said "that's because you saw every play live and they only watched his highlights and NFL career". It was agonizing at the time. Glad to see someone else remembers the "hesitation two-step" dance Jamal started doing.

Is obviously our #1 RB with Neal and Smith sharing the 2 spot. I'm off the Poole train...for now. Tauren can be the best back this year but I didnt see a Travis Stephens like effort from him tonight.

Poole avg'd 4.1 ypc. The rest were under 4. He had one play go for negative yardage.

And... he got those 2-5 yd runs that Jason complained he didn't get last year.

MT sold out to stop the run. Their DL played run gaps, slants, etc. Their LB's played tight to the LOS. They had 8/9 in the box much of the night and had their safeties flying up in run support when they didn't.

I am not sure the coaches didn't want to let MT get away with it to challenge UT's run game. They had a comfortable lead early. The pass game could have turned it into an absolute massacre. If they had abused them more in the deep middle... the running lanes would have opened up.

I know you're a big Poole fan and use his stats to back you up, but there is no way that you watched last night and came away thinking he's a good first option. Missed many running lanes and ran over our own guys over and over. He's solid at the very best and closer to decent. The meaningless run when the game was over helped those statistics dramatically. I don't remember any single player all night that he made miss and at some point, that's his main job.

Just goes to show that feelings are deceptive. You "felt" something that didn't happen but didn't "feel" something that did happen.

The difference between the two, for me, was evident in the swing pass that Lane caught at the eight yard line and made Tru drop his Johnson on the five.

Good grief. Wow. I am very excited about Lane but stuff like this is just ridiculous.

Just watched the replay. Poole's primary hole was completely plugged up on the safety. Before he could even start to make a backside cut, Bullard's guy cut him down. Bullard was completely and totally abused on that play. In fact, almost the whole OL was pushed back into the end zone.

But I am sure that's only because Poole didn't give the second effort you expect, huh?

I don't care how it happened, you don't turn your back to the line in your own endzone, ever.

He didn't play well. No one associated with UT's run game played well last night. MT sold out to stop the run but UT should still be able to get push and yardage. They didn't.

No. I am not ready to draw that conclusion and especially considering that Lane who I think very highly of did even less.

Then you probably need to go watch the replay.

I do not know why he didn't bust some plays outside when nothing was there inside. He did last year but for some reason didn't this game. Is he doing that on his own or is he being coached that way? I don't know but either way he needs to go back to what made him much better than "solid at the very best" by running to daylight.

stick to troy football.

Pool didnt have a great night, but the line admitted they didnt block very well last night... to blame it all on Poole is rediculous.

Nothing about Poole reminds me of Jamal Lewis.

You may be on to something here.

He looks heavier, slower, and last night sluggish. He ended with decent numbers, but looks very different from last year. Im not sure its a good different tho.

Lane just has more of that "it" factor. You can just see it when he runs.

I saw alligator arms & mediocre running behind a weak o-line with Lane. Poole had poor blocking as well. Not sure what "it" factor you saw with Lane that was better than what Poole was doing.

Lane just has more "pop" in his runs. He finds, and hits the whole harder. (no homo) He fought harder for extra yards, and he's faster.

But that's about it.

Heck were you watching? Poole is still running up linemen's back for no apparent reason. His 20 yard run had one really good cut on it(which was the first one). Lane is going to end up being our back come the Florida game. Poole got some okay blocking at times and he missed the holes a lot of times. If he had hit the holes that were there at times maybe the line would've blocked a bit different. Our line could never get in a good rhythm.

So you're saying Lane will be the starter?
