Looking more and more like DeBord will be the new OC

I might also add that in my 20+ years of coaching, I saw quite a lot of staff changes. The head coach had his core group he knew he could count on. Every so often this big name guy would come in all full of himself, new ideas, all that. Every time all it did was disrupt the unity we had on staff and end up with him leaving at the end of the year. Coaches are by nature, creatures of habit. They love continuity. If DeBord gives that to Butch, fine by me.

The offensive scheme is not going to change.

It is not an overly complex system

There are not an overwhelming quantity of plays and sets

It is CBJ's system and he is simply looking for someone to call plays from his system using his philosophy.

I would rather a person he knows and is comfortable with to be in that role than someone who will freelance and create issues and create doubt in the system which is NOT going to change.

Call me Butch,, I will call your plays, using your philosophy and will create no drama.

Boy, I am glad that I am not the only person who understands this. Good post.

I think that Butch knows his offense will work with the right personnel , AND some experience after the bowl game performance. The extra practices, and getting some players healthy was the ticket I think.

The easiest way to mess it up is to bring in a new guy, who wants to make changes. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If Debord needs a little time to be brought up to speed, I feel sure that could be accomplished. Not his first rodeo.

Well said sir. The young are constantly trying to reinvent the wheel so that is cooler. In the end it is still just a wheel whether it is on a 2014 SRT Viper or on a 1973 Dodge Dart. It rolls.

I'm not a huge DeBord proponent but Butch is allowing us all time to digest that it will be DeBord. Use your time as you see fit.

I am quite sure Coach DeBord knows and has forgotten more about the game than 99.97% of the regular poster here. This isn't breaking the warp speed barrier. It's football. He will be fine in whatever role CBJ want him in. One of the best coaches I was ever privileged to work around was in his 70s. Sharp as a tack and knew more about all of the current schemes than anyone around. Folks want splash and glitz and glamour. I want a coach who wants to be here and can help us keep moving forward. To many are hung up on names rather than brains.

Good post. I think that the people who think that 58 is old, have never been 58. My parents both lived and worked into their 90's, and I never saw either confused, forgetful, or anything less than sharp as a tack. I don't believe that either lost a brain cell. Age does not affect everyone equally.

I'd say that's 99.97% true because 99.97% of us didn't choose to go into that profession.

It will roll faster on the Viper. I have owned two 340 Dart GTS's (1968 and 69), and while plenty fast, they were not Vipers. I have a friend who bought a new Viper in the last couple or three years, and he took me for a very fast spin. Impressive!

So then the 99.97% should let the experts in the chosen profession handle their business. I don't know what you do for a living, but I would think you should be afforded the opportunity to run things as you see fit.

My first car was a 73 Dodge Dart Swinger. Great car, but was so worn out the front tires sat out at like a 100 degree angle. It looked like the would collapse at any moment. Sure wish I had that car back now.

Do you coach in Georgia?

A positive about Debord is that since he is oldER, and not a hot OC hire like the guy from TCU is that we do not have to worry about NFL or Michigan beating down the door to want to hire jim after 3 years he will be a john Chavis and stay at a school for 7-10 years IF he is good.

On a more important note, I just filled up my Jeep for $1.85 a gallon. Feels like I'm back in Knoxville early 90's. More Natty Light for VolJas...

IF he is good, he will be poached from every direction regardless of age.

This is the key question....
If he is that good at his age why is he administrating Olympic sports instead of coaching football at Michigan!

I think he was supposed to be AD in waiting until the hoke fiasco. I remember reading that somewhere.

Not in anyway a fan of debord but could it be he wanted to take a break from coaching. Maybe spend more time with family.

This would make sense.
But a fair argument remains that either those in charge there do not feel he is up to the challenge of coaching, or he himself has chosen to pursue a low pressure/commitment non coaching role.
My issue is neither of these screams "great hire" to me irrespective of his vast experience.
I don't mean to be a downer on the guy as I respect his accomplishments, but bringing him in in this situation resonates quick fix to me.
