Late Kick Live “Tennessee in Trouble”

I think you guys do a lot of this!

Ya never know.

I'm from Lynchburg Va. Got a friend who works at Liberty in some significant capacity who out of nowhere told me he had talked to an assistant coach who told him Freeze to TN was a done deal and the coach was all upset.

When did he say this? This week, 2 weeks ago.

Yup...
It makes no sense. Other than two possibilities IMO

1) He felt as a proven coach, he himself didnt get a real chance to turn things around and he wants to give Jeremy that shot because thats his first hire as Head Football coach at UT. Imagine that if you are Phil Fulmer, National Champion coach...choosing a guy to carry on your legacy that got ended to early.

2) He hates Hugh Freeze and he will fight tooth and nail to keep pruitt or ANYONE else.

Option 1 doesn't logically add-up it seems. Fulmer, HOF and NC winning coach, knows what a good football coach does and looks like. CJP hasn't done many thinga a good football coach and program CEO does in awhile...

Not really. It makes sense. You hired the guy. You put your stamp of approval on him. You, of all people, should be able to hire a good football coach. And he is not doing well, are you going to stick by YOUR hire, or are you going to turn on him?

Fulmer hired the Alabama defensive coordinator who had never been a head coach before. He hired the red flag ridden, brash, tough to get along with coach. This was his baby.

He is going to ride it out until the decision to let Pruitt go is no longer his. Which, it may be already to that point.

But it's not weird. It's stupid. But it makes perfect sense that Fulmer is going to stick by the most important hire he has made thus far to the bitter end.

Under normal circumstances I'd agree. Fulmer took over the disaster of a search in the 11th hour. He didn't have many options left. If Pruitt failed I don't think many would have ultimately been upset with Fulmer for that swing and miss. All he had to so was own-up to it and move on.

Fulmer didn't have the best record of hiring assistants as head coach, i.e. Randy Sanders. Why should we assume his hires as AD will be better?

Can someone please explain how a guy who never coached a down of college football and was a total failure in a short stint in the NFL was the big time splash at the time? So a proven loser was a bigger splash hire than a proven winner????

He was THE hottest young offensive mind in college football. From the Carroll tree. He brought an NFL HOF coach in as his DC along with THE best staff in America. His staff was better than Saban's at the time. Unfortunately, Lane was too immature. He would have been successful here. Everyone says stuff about violations but we would have figured that out if he stayed. Firing Fulmer was a mistake but Lane was an understandable choice.

Fulmer had an excellent staff. Almost entire staff went on to good programs and good jobs when he was let go.

Cutcliffe one of the best QB developers in history of cfb. Chavis was the highest pad DC in America at one point. Dan Brooks was considered the best DL coach in the biz until he retired from Clemson.

Clawson was considered one of the brightest up and coming coaches when Fulmer hired him. He is a P5 coach now. Was a bad fit here but if Hamilton didn't short change Fulmer on salary in an attempt to sabotage Fulmer he wouldn't even been chosen.

Jones should have been the "bridge" coach.

Instead, Fulmer, with all his supposed knowledge and clout around the NCAA, managed to make what is going to go down as the worst hire in the history of the program.

He’s saying what I’ve been telling some people on this forum for a month. 😂 freeze to Knoxville, briles to liberty. It’s going to be a week late, but some of you who wanted to fight me over it should kick not just rocks but boulders.

#hughtothehill

If tennessee is punished by the NCAA you can kiss Freeze goodbye.

Josh says, paraphrased. There is trouble in Knoxville. An actual hiring freeze in Tennessee means that the "mess in Tennessee" reflects that the investigations, (not specific on what caused this), creates problems for Pruitt because he cannot replace coaches, nor recruit effectively. You are witnessing the end of Jeremy Pruitt. There will be a time, probably soon, where the Lawyers and Pruitt will sit down and be terminated. If he survives this, he will not have his staff to ensure a success next year. If it does not cost him his employment in 2021, he will have both hands tied behind his back.
"TN right now is a mess. Even if you get rid of Pruitt right now, the violations, if real, remain. Who can they get? My opinion is that even if there are no sanctions hanging over TN, What if they cannot get anyone any better? "I think at this point, TN needs a bridge candidate." Whoever TN brings in will not be here in 2024. A coach to steady the boat. It is not realistic for TN to hire a top coach right now.

Freeze: The tease: If the big hire is actually made now, it has to be Freeze. Art Briles to Liberty if it all comes together. Possible, but wild speculation.

Tom Hermon used as an example as one who would not be fired, but was anyway.

No coach could succeed in JP's shoes currently.

The hiring freeze is a temporary measure. A signal more than anything. The freeze will magically be lifted with the termination of Pruitt. I dont think this thing goes anywhere but there now.

I'm also from Lynchburg! You a Hilltopper by chance?

He was OC at USC before The Oakland Raiders. He was already respected as a good football mind. But a "big time splash " doesn't mean homerun hire. It just means you created some waves and talk.

I love these poor folks who think Fulmer will have anything at all to do with what's about to transpire. This firing and subsequent hiring of the next coach will not have Fulmer giving any say-so in the matter. I've said several times he may also get the boot with Pruitt. But UT will let him resign and say the plan all along was for him to only be here temporarily and he just wants to slow down and spend more time with the grandkids and at home enjoying life.

There is too much focus on Investigation "by the NCAA"...which at the moment, this is not. This is an internal investigation and they will report their findings, and subsequent self-imposed penalties to the NCAA once finished. Those self-imposed penalties could be the firing of the coaching staff, including the HC, and that could be accepted as sufficient by the NCAA, and UT hires a new HC, and moves forward. I am very skeptical, that unless these violations are very minor, that they would then turn around and hire Freeze with his NCAA baggage, just my opinion though. I do think we should all wait before throwing PF under the bus again and see how this plays out. I don't fault him for the JP hire considering the circumstances and options at the time, and i have faith in his love for UT that like us, he wants a successful football program very badly. There are a lot of possibilities on how this is all going to play out, so we will just have to wait and see.

I have the feeling the NCAA will hand down sanctions against Tennessee and Jeremy Pruitt will be shown the door while Phil Fulmer resigns.
The NCAA is not even investigating Tennessee. This is an internal investigation. If we wait for the NCAA to sanction TN before we fire Pruitt, he still be here in 2023.

You people are something... you'd hire anybody, except Schiano, of course, and all he's done is get Rutgers on the right track... First it was Gruden, who has barely won half his games, and is below that if you take out that one season. Then it was Leach. Entertaining character, but I wouldn't want him as my coach. All his "air raid" means is that he passes on every down. Not much variety there. Then Jeremy Pruitt, who many of you were exhorting as Nick Saban's replacement after his first season here.
