Larry Porter- Running Backs Coach Candidate

I think we could get him, too. Move Joseph over to the VFL program, and make Porter RB coach/ recruiting coordinator. Fire Hiestand, and hire another DB coach.

Why would they fire him? He's only in his second year; showed improvement in his record from first to second year; and had a 1-7 conference mark. I bet firing this coach after only two years will destroy the Memphis program.

Not an apt comparison whatsoever. UT looks well coached compared to Memphis.

Hiestand is not the problem. The offensive line is really good at pass blocking ..which is harder to do that run blocking in most cases. that lets me know he has coached them , plus he has nothing but praise from anyone he has coached in the past .

The problem is the sprint draw running mindset. We have attempted to run power forms a few times and were ...successful relative to the formation and result of the play . This mindset did not come from Chaney ( although is a strong contributor to the offensive failures) This spint draw concept was what Dooley ran at LA Tech. It worked well in the MAC , but will never work in the SEC. The backers are just too good.

The QB delivers the ball to the back and then the back attacks the line of scrimmage . They build in a bunch of post snap motions that are designed to drag the backers andf safeties out of position ( see Wing T ) The motions do get people out of position BUT in the SEC they backers are fast eneough to recover and fill the gap .

The delay in the QB drop and the handoff to the deep set back is the issue . Running holes and lanes are opening , but at the handoff the backers simply attack the gap and create a blocking overload that is not apparent pre-snap. No O-line coach could overcome this schematic flaw unless you somehow , magically gave him 8 down linemen ...because after the D reads spint - draw , thats how many defenders you have in the box.

Chaney is an impatient play caller. Very few 4 yard waggles , screens , comebacks . Everything is of the 15 yard variety which is harder to execute and lower percentage . He is trying to force 'explosiveness' If you look at manning , Brady , Breeze , ect ...you will see their Os are mostly short , executable stuff and then a well timed deep or mid-range attack

They need to forget the 'spread' concept and the sprint draw concept. Power running , I form , off sets , prosets . Play action not just 1 or 2 times a game . Make their passing forms look exactly like their running forms . In order to do this , I think Chaney has to go . I think Dooley needs to let go of his MAC style. We are the only team in the SEC with the draw mindset and also one of the worst running teams in the country ..it is not a coincident.

He was Rivals Recruiter of the Decade. I don't care what title you give him, get him in Knoxville nd don't let our rivals snap him up. Call him freaknin' Quality Control Coach or Asst Dir of Player Personnel, whatever, just let him recruit for us before he recruits for someone else.

(edited to point out that I was referring to the earlier discussion of Larry Porter, not the discussion of Hiestand)

Porter is a nice guy that isn't made to be a HC. I wouldn't be against bringing him in as RB's coach. He can recruit as well as anybody. How he was able to get a few good recruits to Memphis before he was fired amazes me.

if CHH goes, Dooley is said to be looking into bringing in a running backs coach. Porter is now unemployed, coached running backs at LSU, and used to have a pretty good reputation as a recruiter. Good idea to call him maybe?

Absolutely a great idea to call him. A+ recruiter wherever he has been. I hope he has already been contacted

I've always liked the running backs coach at South Carolina. Isn't he an ex-Vol, too?

Porter, Gran or Graham. Give me any of the three and its a start. The next step in turning this train wreck around is firing chaney and getting an OC. Then go from there.

I used to work in the ad and still know folk from coaches, sports info, managers to ad execs. They share what they can.
