Lady Vols vs Sooners game 1

Karen can call out the fact that Oklahoma has the home field advantage while also saying her team was not fazed (as shown until the last play of the game). Why can't you stop your Darth act. You're not fooling anyone.

Home field advantage was at Norman and took 2 of 3. The constant whining on all softball forums of the location of the WCWS is as old as time. In 9 years before the 10 year clock runs out on Devon Field, complain then. No complaints about it until they started going on their streak of nattys did folks start complaining. It is what it is. Karen wasn’t complaining in 07. Or ‘13. Now all of a sudden it’s an issue. Get over yourself and let it go. Other teams (James Madison as example) have beaten OU on that field, yet we struggle because of perceived home field advantage. We kept them below their run average and had opportunities to kick the door wide open for more runs. Maybe they should reconsider playing there and move it. You’re on to something, mouth. 👍🤣

As long as NIL is competitive don’t see that happening
After NiJaree’s million dollar deal, nothing would surprise me. Especially with her being a generational talent and the imaginative idea of what her future COULD look like elsewhere… Makes me nervous. And honestly, I can’t say I’d blame her if she considered leaving if we can’t manage a win today. We’ve kept too many elite pitchers already from winning a national championship. I’d hate to see another.

It’s not up to Karlyn to pitch to her. It’s CKW decision and she didn’t make the right decision to walk her in that instance. Karlyn shouldn’t have been given that option. Walk the girl and let Karlyn pitch to a freshman. If a freshman beats you, then you tip your hat to Oklahoma. Karlyn shouldn’t have been given the option to pitch to her. That’s a coaching decision and an easy one given the magnitude of the situation.
Right. Because the alternative is you DO get the freshman out and we’re in the winner’s bracket and it doesn’t matter you that you made Ella Parker a nonfactor. No competitor can tell me that if you win, you’d look back on it and say, “Man, I hate I didn’t throw to her.” Athletes want to win and if Karlyn DID want to throw to Ella like the analysts said, that’s a perfect personification of that mindset. But at the same time, because you want to win, IF you do, not throwing to Parker becomes a moot point for the greater good.

Now, though, you have to live with the fact that your ego or, for semantics here, the ego of whoever made the call) got in the way.

This should have been a coach’s decision.

Blame Karen all you want, but this one was on KP. As awesome as she is, she went to a full count on the lead off batters in the 2nd and 3rd innings and walked the lead off batters in the 4th, 5th and 7th.

After walking the leadoff (number seven hitter) in the 7th, I wondered if this was the one that was going to bite her. Extremely hard to beat great competition when you give them three lead off walks.

Hopefully, they'll bounce back tonight.

GBO!

You’ll be alright. It’s okay to be ignorant. We recognized this in you right off the bat. You’re a pathetic hater who always puts the team down.

From Google Gemini:
(I asked for implication of 3 leadoff walks, in 4th, 5th and 7th inning between evenly matched teams and 3-1 score when walks occurred)

Given the inherent danger of leadoff walks and the critical junctures (especially the 7th inning) in a low-scoring game, the team giving up these walks would likely win less than 50% of the time, perhaps in the 30-40% range, assuming the "evenly matched" characteristic holds for their overall talent. This is because they are continually putting themselves in high-stress, high-risk situations.
To get a precise number, you'd need to analyze historical NCAA softball data for similar scenarios, which is not readily available.

I watched the post game presser and Karen was pretty adamant that they did the right thing pitching to Parker. Which was not very comforting. It reminded when Bonds was juiced to the gills coaches would walk him with the bases loaded not Bobby Cox he would always pitch to him cause he was old school and more times than it was a bad decision.

The problem is, they had already burnt the mound visit earlier in the inning

That was before my time, but I concur: her being adamant that pitching to Parker was the right move was not very comforting. I don't expect Karen to sit there and say it was the worst mistake in the world, but some acknowledgement of, "Hey, hindsight is 20/20. I can see where we might've had a different outcome if we had thrown to her." My initial reaction to that was almost disbelief. For one, it felt like she thew Karlyn under the bus for the walk but had no interest in taking any sort of blame or, heck, even considering there was another move we could've made with Parker. And two, it was almost a stubborn, bull-headed mentality. But, you can't put the toothpaste back in the tube, so...

And I like to think of myself as a pretty objective person. I know they're required to do media pretty quickly after the game finishes. I'm sure her response would be different if she'd had more time to decompress and get her thoughts together. That's part of what separates great coaches from good coaches, though—the ability to identify problem areas and adjust pretty fast. I just hope she would at least consider a different approach next time.

But something tells me she won't. I had deja vu, watching Ella Parker's home run leave the yard. It's so close to how we lost in 2013: pitching to Chamberlain.

This is good context. I was on my way home with the game playing and the crappy ESPN app cut out after the walk. (Imagine the fever dream feeling I had when it finally came back on as Parker's ball was headed to centerfield. I almost had to stop to puke.) That said, I didn't know we didn't have a mound visit left.

So, you are relying on FB comments as a fair and impartial assessment of their fan base?
I’m relying on what I see. You’ll see more people on FB than you will at a game. Scroll on through any article’s comment section.

First time posting here on the softball forum. Just want to echo what a crushing blow that was last night. I am still sincerely in a funk. We had them! I am still so proud of our team.
It hurts me for them. It's like when your kids fail at something they work so hard trying to do. And there's nothing you can do about it except just hurt with them.

I hope and pray to God we can squeak out a win against Florida. If not, I’m afraid we might lose Karlyn to the portal.
I’ve said this before and I will say it again. Karlyn is not going anywhere. She loves this team. She loves the university. Her hometown isn’t far at all from Knoxville so her family is at just about every home game. Her boyfriend goes to school 30 min from Knoxville. And she is well compensated here. She is the highest paid female athlete at Tennessee. She could’ve left last year. Schools came calling. She wants to win with THIS team. She began her career a Lady Vol and she will end iit a Lady Vol.

Not even a time out called to talk about it. Just mind blowing.

I hear you. I’m in your camp. I think she likes it here, and the perks are obvious for her compared to other players. I HOPE she doesn’t leave and for the most part, I believe she won’t. I actually, during supers, gave this same spiel to someone on Reddit. I’m just a nervous/anxious skeptic because money talks. And she’s good enough to win it all.

Apparently we had already spent our mound visit earlier in the inning.
I don't remember anyone going to the circle in the bottom of the 7th. I remember a time out being called while we were batting because hitting coach was on the field talking to Nugent. I thought OK called that one. Would have to go back and watch but I do remember thinking to myself when Parker came up call a time out and discuss the strategy.

I’ll just say I have it on good authority she’s not going anywhere

The buck stops with the head coach. No question about. Karen should have said WE ARE WALKING HER!!! She didn’t and the rest is history. She probably destroyed her pitchers confidence as a result. Bottom line it’s Karen’s decision!!
