It's not just Heupel. They are just miserable and complain about anything.-VN thinks Tim Banks sucks and has pretty much said anyone is an upgrade.
- VN says Josh Heupel won’t fire his buddy Banks.
-Heupel cans Banks. The DC search is on.
- Started to hear traction about Ryan Walters being the guy.
-VN seems to be kind of excited.
-However you wanna slice it, Jim Knowles has been a top defensive name in CF for quite a few years.
-Most on VN had him as one of their dream hires.
-Of course most on here, including myself, said Knowles would be a fantastic hire but it’s nothing but a pipe dream.
-All of a sudden that pipe dream seems to be more of a reality. Josh Heupel went out and possibly hired one of the biggest names in college football.
-As expected, we have dumb fans that somehow are upset and finding fault with Heupel hiring someone like Knowles.
Good God. I guess to some of you Josh Heupel can’t do anything right.
Yep, that was my first thought as well...one year to get all the pieces in place for CFP run for 2027 and beyond. May even not go after transfer QB if that is the plan. Save some $$ for other positions of need. One concern i've heard is that his defense is complicated and requires a learning curve. Some concerns about how well the players can perform in 1 year.
Maybe the thought is a "push" for next year and set up 27-30 for a run with Faze as QB?
Single down year for Banks? Or single good year from Banks? I need clarification if you think this year was the only bad defensive year we had under Banks? The breakdown of Knowles/his defenses is it always takes a year for it to get properly implemented. Apparently a very complicated/hard to learn scheme, but once learned, is really good.
Which makes one question why we'd go with him considering this fan base couldn't handle a single down year from Banks, but whatever I guess.
Like the hire, but it will likely require patience before elite results are seen.
Quick scanning Knowles vs Banks, both run a 4-2-5 with Knowles using lots more variation but both DCs were similar in wanting to be aggressive with pressure.
It seems Knowles is more creative, read: complex, with his use of his edges than Banks. Knowles needs his guys to be bright and adapt to different assignments well.
Open to correction but I like what I see, especially that there's some similarities between Banks and Knowles at the core we can build on rather than nuke the whole thing.
That's my evening "entertainment" if (when) I can't get comfy to sleep. You nailed it. Go back and watch our playoff game and you will see just how good of a DC he is.
The best who isn’t a head coach or Connor Stallions*He is brother. He's the absolute best. White and Heup are serious about a Natty
If we have to suffer another down year next year, then so be it. If Knowles makes his normal improvement in 2027 when Faizon and Key are experienced, then it’s completely worthwhile. From a good friend who's a Penn State fan:
"Franklin stole him from Ohio St made him highest paid DC in college football history. Annnnnnnd our defense was terrible. So I say yall can have him, good riddance..."
I'm hoping he's wrong but most DCs will have great players at OSU and PSU to work with. And of course the players quit on Franklin this year so his tenure there in one season is hard to gage.
It's the damndest thing I've ever seen. Some folks are allergic to joyThat's my evening "entertainment" if (when) I can't get comfy to sleep.
I like what I see. I liked Walters because of his youth but Knowles is actually "the best on the market" currently.
He's excellent and available and we got him (hopefully) but I see some here are unhappy. I believe the expression is: we couldn't please you if we hung you with a new rope.
Well, you're overlooking an oft forgotten fact: Tennessee is an elite academic institution and only the brightest students can get in. That holds especially true for the football players. One concern i've heard is that his defense is complicated and requires a learning curve. Some concerns about how well the players can perform in 1 year.
Regular Season 2024
-Lost to Oregon giving up 31
-Beat PSU allowing 13
-Held Indiana to 15
-Lost to Michigan in a headscratcher giving up 13 and that is just the regular season.
CFP national title run
-Vols scored 17
-Number 1 Ducks scored 21
-Horns down 17
-Notre Douche was held to 23 in the title game.
It’s been rumored Martinez will retire but that’s been rumored the last couple of years at the end of season. So if Knowles is the hire, who does he retain that is already on our staff? Does he bring any other assitants with him from PSU? I hope he and Garner both give us another 6-7 years before retiring. I personally hope we keep Inge. I think he is a good coach. Yes our LB's were liabilities but I think Perlotte developed well and he has recruited some young studs. He seems to be well liked. I was never a Martinez fan either but he has sort of changed my mind the past 2 years.
I think if you look at those numbers and when you consider the talent level of the teams he was working with there it’s reasonable for us to expect to be in the low 30s next year and then quickly make jump to the low 20s or better in seasons two and three. And if that’s the case, I love it.
