Knowles Expected to be DC

Last year wasn't his best in his first year at PSU. He allowed 21 ppg his first year at OSU, though, and that includes 45 to Michigan and 42 to Georgia in their last two games. His defenses were lights out his other two years at OSU.
To me that’s the making of a good defensive coordinator. IE - Noticeable improvement and not a lot of fall off after leaving. That means he recruited well and taught the fundamentals to the young guys.

Saban’s/ Muschamp’s LSU defense did not fall off right away, either. As long as the players have mastered the fundamentals, most DC’s can turn out solid results.

Here are the total rankings for Knowles' defenses before his one year at Penn State:

Duke (2010-2017)
109
90
110
65
24
47
66
22

OK State (2018-2021)
97
61
34
9

Ohio State (2022-2024):
24
2
1

I'm willing to concede that it may take some time to adapt to his schemes--the rankings do suggest that. But we have to assume that we have much better athletes than he ever had at Duke and OK State. There shouldn't be as much as a learning curve. And he STILL kept those teams very consistent, given the talent he was provided. Even his time at Ohio State shows a huge leap, even when you consider that Ohio State is a blue blood that consistently has the best athletes in the country.

I'm hoping, even if the scheme may take a year to develop, that in year 1 we see a clear improvement in basic fundamentals like tackling, pursuit angles etc.

Kinda torn on this one.

His defenses at tOSU were unbelievable. That being said, with that amount of talent the Suckeyes could most likely name my 86 year old mother as D coordinator and still be lock down. Her knowledge of football is limited to the QB is the one who throws the ball.

The stop at PSU this last season scares me

I'm also curious as to Heupels fascination with PSU DCs. Didn't we pull Banks from there also??
And Bob Shoop.

If it eases you're mind a little, Ohio State's scoring defense was pretty much the same from the year before Knowles got the to his first season. He improved their total ypg defense from 38th to 14th, though.

The breakdown of Knowles/his defenses is it always takes a year for it to get properly implemented. Apparently a very complicated/hard to learn scheme, but once learned, is really good.

Which makes one question why we'd go with him considering this fan base couldn't handle a single down year from Banks, but whatever I guess.

Like the hire, but it will likely require patience before elite results are seen.

The down year with Banks would have been more tolerable if 21-23 had not happened.

Said he was 95th in the nation at penn state getting off the field on 3rd downs. Looks like he will fit in fine 😂....UCLA hung 42 on him with Nico.
Im not blown away with this hire. Hope he is not a has been with an over complicated D. Hopefully he will kill it here and we can actually be good on both sides of the ball at the same time for once.

From a good friend who's a Penn State fan:

"Franklin stole him from Ohio St made him highest paid DC in college football history. Annnnnnnd our defense was terrible. So I say yall can have him, good riddance..."

I'm hoping he's wrong but most DCs will have great players at OSU and PSU to work with. And of course the players quit on Franklin this year so his tenure there in one season is hard to gage.

-VN thinks Tim Banks sucks and has pretty much said anyone is an upgrade.
- VN says Josh Heupel won’t fire his buddy Banks.
-Heupel cans Banks. The DC search is on.
- Started to hear traction about Ryan Walters being the guy.
-VN seems to be kind of excited.
-However you wanna slice it, Jim Knowles has been a top defensive name in CF for quite a few years.
-Most on VN had him as one of their dream hires.
-Of course most on here, including myself, said Knowles would be a fantastic hire but it’s nothing but a pipe dream.
-All of a sudden that pipe dream seems to be more of a reality. Josh Heupel went out and possibly hired one of the biggest names in college football.
-As expected, we have dumb fans that somehow are upset and finding fault with Heupel hiring someone like Knowles.

Good God 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄. I guess to some of you Josh Heupel can’t do anything right.
Preach It Brother

You forgot, it wasn't Huepel's choice to fire Banks. Danny White pressured him to do so.

I think if you look at those numbers and when you consider the talent level of the teams he was working with there it’s reasonable for us to expect to be in the low 30s next year and then quickly make jump to the low 20s or better in seasons two and three. And if that’s the case, I love it.
