The program though is far more damaged today than it was when Kiffin was hired or when he left. I don't disagree that Kiffin leaving triggered what has ultimately been a negative series of events. However, Kiffin leaving didn't force the Dooley hire, or the Butch hire, or the loss to Georgia St.Hiring Kiffin led to every bad thing that has happened since, including losing to Georgia State.

There were opportunities to right the ship after he left (the biggest one being right after he left, either getting Cut or waiting and going with an interim), but the admin botched those chances as well. It hasn't been just one bad decision - it's been a series of them, and the cycle just hasn't been broken yet.
Our admin is incapable of making good decisions with things are relatively OK, so why should they be better decision-makers when things get really bad?
Lane is a much better guy now than when he was here, the USC gig humbled him quite a bit. However the way he left was ridiculous and was just a slap in the face, the man is a great offensive coach but if he had stayed I'm afraid we would've been in all kinds of trouble with the NCAA.
Actually no it's not overplayed, losing scholarships, negating wins or even championships, Heisman trophies ( Reggie Bush). It's a big deal just because the NCAA hasn't laid down a death penalty since smu it's still a big deal. Penn state had to negate wins, lost scholarships, had their once proud name drug through the mud and one of the greatest coaches ever was looked at as an enabler to a sick disgusting act. I love the University of Tennessee, I played for Coach Fulmer and I for one wouldn't want our great university looked at in that light. We were on probation after Kiffin left due to violations and that was enough. I don't hate Kiffin by no means, I feel we hired him at the wrong time now he's matured some or atleast more than he was when he was here. This last sentence, that line of thought. I think is so overplayed. The NCAA does not increase revenue by making members irrelevant. You hardly see these hard line stances from them any longer. Hell, PSU ran a school for raping young boys. How devastating were their penalties?
