Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

The saddest part of this situation is the tarnishing of the Pat Summit legacy. Demolishing Pat’s legacy and all she did to put this program at the highest level hurts more than anything. Pat is women's basketball she is the one who put it on the map. Something needs to be done to preserve Pat’s legacy and to put this program back on the level it deserves.

In all due respect, Pat's legacy can't be tarnished for many reasons, including that it extends beyond the game of basketball.

Currently, the LVs basketball program needs to establish its own legacy in its post-Pat era. Holly ran with the maintaining the legacy idea and it worked while Pat's connection to the program was still there with the current players. That approach began to lose effectiveness after 3 years.

Us ancient fans have to remember that our relationship to Pat's legacy is completely from a 18 year-old kid who has grown in WCBB landscape where Tennessee has been an afterthought.
I think their might be a change Tennessee volunteers lady Vols get five more wins before the NCAA tournament
Here my take beat Arkansas Monday in Knoxville
Then beat Vanderbilt in Nashville next, Sunday
Then Finished by beating Texas A&M in Knoxville to end Tennessee five games in a row. In the Volunteers state
Beat South Carolina or Louisiana tigers in Knoxville would be a bonus

Then Finished Fifth place in the SEC season and win two games in SEC Tournament
Lady Vols rise their seed in. The NCAA tournament
Any one or two wins on the road in the NCAA tournament
Tennessee volunteers will have a upset win or two.
Meaning Kellie might get to coach the lady Vols who are enrolled but not got To play yet

One game at a time mind set.

Ok...let me put it another way. Kelley is an alum, and she is coaching players that are playing in the Tennessee program. That could mean she will be loyal to a fault to those players and not push them as hard or be hard on them because they are playing for the very school she played for. That may not be the case, but two former Tennessee players that were named coach haven't been successful. Heck even Summitt played at Tennessee-Martin, not for the Vols. I have seen more failure than success with these coaches who go home to coach. Just something to think about. Kelley and Holly would seem like a no-lose hire and yet neither has been able to move the needle. Tennessee is too steeped in WBB history for this to be happening.
How was Holly no lose? She was a decades long assistant with no significant interest from anyone in that time to make her a head coach. Same for Harper. She was a proven failure at P5 level.

Decades long coach for the top program in the women’s game. Why leave, not every successful asst. coach is chasing the head coach title. If she was a bad coach, why didn’t Summitt let her go?

i am all for the quixotic look through rose colored glasses but we seem to come on the floor with an attitude and posture of i don't care it would be nice to see some fight some hustle some sort of sign that we DO care some respect for the program some nod to Pat and the legacy Man, we got outrebounded by Alabama

In all due respect, Pat's legacy can't be tarnished for many reasons, including that it extends beyond the game of basketball.

Currently, the LVs basketball program needs to establish its own legacy in its post-Pat era. Holly ran with the maintaining the legacy idea and that approach worked reasonably well while Pat's connection to the program was still there with the current players. The legacy approach began to lose effectiveness after 3 years.

We fossilized fans have to remember that our relationship to Pat's legacy is completely different from an 18 year-old kid who has grown in a WCBB landscape where Tennessee has been a consistent afterthought. We are now at the point where current high school recruits were toddlers or infants when the LVs won their last NC.
Extending a legacy has a continuing life that extends way past the end of a legend, it is the heart of the program that changes with each playing class. They may have forgotten the starter of the legacy but never forget a winning attitude and the desire to be at the upper echelon of a sport or position. The desire to continue a legacy of greatness is instilled and carried on by those who follow others through out the life of a program. Younger players may not remember who Pat is, or the Nattys she won, but her desire for excellence can be carried on by others for years to come in different ways to meet the changes in the many playing classes.

She was a great balance to Summit with the players. She was ideal as a third assistant when there were 2 other strong assistants. None of that was useful as a head coach. Clearly, everyone else in the business knew it, too

Or she was happy coaching in her hometown for the university she graduated from. Something to be said for knowing your part in a successful organization.

Arkansas gets hot shooting the 3 will be different ballgame lv can’t defend it. Vandy will be ready at home hard place to win but not playing good last few games. We lose the remaining games and needs to be fired before the sec tournament

They be no one fire mid season unless theirs something big happened comes out about Kellie .001% chance
That said No NCAA tournament Kellie in trouble.

What a season pass to Dollywood, Dawn probably has everything she needs and wants including a powerhouse in Women's Basketball.

Okay shes built a powerhouse. Now go be a big girl and get it done at the most prestigious program in the history of the sport. Be a Legend in a community besides bum **** Columbia. It’s South Carolina people lol

Right I should have said after season.
When has Tennessee fired a coach before end of season without rules being broken.?
Can't recall any sport.
Fulmer is as close as it’s been.
Was told he’s not coming back, does the press conference and we lose to Wyoming. He finished the season but was technically fired before the end of the season.

Which proved Karma is a bad bit*h bc Fulmer got the job by replacing Johnny Majors mid season when he went out with heart problems mid season. Very much against Majors' wishes at the time.

Nope,,, but if it does go downhill,, look for unsuspecting casualties
Tennessee loses to Arkansas.
Vanderbilt going smell blood in the water.
Tennessee beats Arkansas and Vanderbilt the the river gets a little clearer and clamer.
With each loss of the two games this week in the Volunteers state
.More of the
Volunteers Navy and more fans will abandoning ship on Kellie
Im still hopeful Kellie rights the riverboat her fate is riding on.
Whichever way it goes it will go down in her home state.

That Vanderbilt and Tennessee might be mouth of the Tennessee river loser might not get out . Of the Tennessee river were their boats might sink.
Both teams might get to play or ride their boats to bigger rivers during the NCAA tournament but the loser going to have hit some rough waters to make it.

This.

All the supporters of Warluck when she was demolishing Pat's legacy and now of Harper when she's not be able to rebuild it are disgusting.

Warlick was the 2nd assistant for many years. I'm not sure when she became to the top assistant but I think it was late in PS's tenure. She and PS became close friends over the years. Warlick had no coaching chops other than being an assistant here for a long time. There is a big difference between being an assistant and being a head--a big difference. You don't generally turn a major revenue program with our history over to an unproven coach. He does happen, however. UNC men have done it twice in the last 20 years or so. The first time they did it was a major failure. Now they've done it again with Hubert Davis and he had a good first year, bad second year and this year the Heels are good again, so we'll see. After the first failure with an assistant, UNC hired a very experienced head coach who was at another major program, and he won 2 national titles with the Heels. Mighty Duke hired an assistant to take over for coach K. It's risky--we'll see how he does.

One thing to note: When Warlick took over, the women's game had changed a lot. The game had evolved dramatically from the time PS started and when she finished, and she was struggling the last 10+ years. Save for the Parker years, her teams really struggled offensively. That was not a PS strength. By the time Warlick got the head job, the sport was far more competitive and teams were better offensively--and so coaches had to be good in all phases of the game. These days there are a ton of good coaches in every sport, all the sports are highly competitive, and you have to be good to succeed. And you'd better have a good staff as well. All that said, hiring coaches at the collegiate or pro level is a crap shoot. Nobody knows who will succeed or fail--it's wait, hope and see.
