Kavanaugh Confirmation

The only one of those that might do something is cannot become a lobbyist after the term is up. It would make being a Congressperson or Senator less attractive if they couldn't get involved in lobbying after that. But "lobbyist" is a big term. It would be a really common thing for them to take lobbyist-type jobs after their term and claim they aren't involved in lobbying.

The others, especially term limits or low pay, do nothing to solve the real problem. None of them are there for the pay or benefits anyway.

You have to remove the incentives that allow for a corruptible human.

Term limit sure do. You go do your civic duty, and then you leave. There is no free life time of this DC life, you will not be able to fight to keep your job, because it's not your job to keep anymore. Add in yearly audits, it will be hard to be self serving, harder than now. Benefits because they do not deserve them, they do matter, a life time of free healthcare, who wouldn't want to have that. Gone. One less self serving incentive.

Low pay because it isn't a profession, it's a matter of passion and truly caring about what you are doing, no different than a high school teacher, they are not making a lot of money and thus their motives should be more sincere and apparent. These elected officials are supposed to be "volunteers", nothing more. When they make less, they aren't as akin to being of the mindset that they are of the King's court, they are nothing special, just doing their part.

The most important is turning in corruption, as you make the whislteblower into an a instant millionaire and you'd be amazed at how quickly things change. Granted, you might see what this whole thread entails, political theater and false accusations that take up time and resources. But, once again, level harsh and immediate punishment for doing such a thing, and you will see change.

I think the lobbyists is the most difficult, but, once there is no incentive for a politician to be dirty, as seen above, once again, you'd be amazed at how quickly lobbying starts to take a drastic downturn.

Is she wrong? If the posters on here are any indication, she was 100% spot on.

Nobody is going to change their mind because they are at the end of the process, yesterday served no real purpose, if anything Kavanaugh looked real good. Yesterday was political grand standing as has been the last few weeks. Basically they have another opportunity to wear their pink hats, and the world passes them by and they continue to be amazed as to why it doesn't work.

You were the one that called her an old bag with the nerve to make what you now admit is a true statement.
of course it's true but if she wanted any credibility (which she doesn't anymore) she would have also said "as we democrats had also made up our minds before one word was uttered" but no she wants to act like they all were above the partisanship and had an open mind

Lobbying occurs because the government has power. It's that simple. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Politicians want to be politicians because the government has power, and that power gives them the ability to (legally, by the way) dole out things that benefit the entities that helped them get elected. Term limits, low pay, no benefits, etc. does not really remove that incentive. You'd clean out the sludge once every few years, but it is refilled with people who want to come in right after them. Most DC politicians are independently wealthy before they come to Congress anyway. Bob Corker, for example, is not there because the Senate has a great benefits package.

In a relationship between a bribe-maker and a bribe-taker, the bribe-taker has the power. If you want to help solve the problem, you have to take away the thing that bribe-taker intends to give in exchange for the bribe.
