Can anyone explain why the FBI would be the investigator in this situation if it was not in their role of performing background checks?

So the lawyer who said she was willing to testify isn’t the lawyer who said she wouldn’t. Now this chick has at least 2 lawyers.

It makes zero sense. I guess another “background check” could be performed at the behest of the White House, but that’s not what Ford is asking for. She apparently wants a full fledged criminal investigation. If that’s the case, she needs to contact the Montgomery County Sherrif’s Department.

So she goes from wanting to be anonymous to willing to testify to unwilling to testify to requesting an FBI investigation? Honestly, her credibility is shot at this point. This is obviously a political stunt. She's being handled by the Dems. This is nothing more than a shameless delaying tactic. Way over the top.

Why can't she testify prior to any FBI investigation - how are their findings (if there were any) going to impact what she can testify to? Wouldn't any investigation naturally begin with hearing from the parties? Why am I betting Ford (via her attorneys) would decline to talk to the FBI before the FBI takes any further steps?

How do you even investigate an alleged crime from 35 years ago with zero proof and an expired statute of limitations?

The thing about this is that both sides can twist things and say the other is doing it out of bad motive. The GOP can say the Dems are having her ask for the investigation to delay and have Trump say no. The Dems can say the reason that Trump and the GOP want to move forward without it is to prevent corroboration from being discovered.

Whole thing is very depressing to watch. Again, both sides.

You don't and that's the point. There won't be an investigation, she won't testify, Dems will cry foul. Still all comes down to Collins and Flake; how they choose to balance BS with their convictions.

But the very call itself for an investigation by the FBI before the accuser will testify is a virtually unmeetable and absurd demand. It is not a serious call for anything other than delay. Of course the GOP has to call it what it is. Obviously you are pro-Dem but you have to admit this a BS move.

The FBI doesn't have the jurisdiction for a criminal investigation of this nature and the accuser would have to press charges and the local LE/Justice would need to see enough to initiate a criminal investigation (so far as I can tell)>
