Josh is not the guy

Is it? Perspective is important. Let’s say we win 2 more, but lose to FL, then win a bowl. We win 9.

Who did we really beat this year worth bragging about beating?
So, the bad seasons under CJH are 4 lose seasons? I am old enough to remember when hoping for a bowl game at Tennessee was as thing every year before CJH.

I don't see Heupel pulling that off anywhere, even LSU , if he kept his current coaching staff intact.

There are just too many deficiencies to overcome to make a serious run.
I agree - but I think he would have a completely different staff at LSU and they are already loaded with talent. It would be up to D White if he was AD there to buy him the staff he needs. Would be easier there for them starting from scratch. Also seems like Heupel does his best work as HC early on (first couple of years). I think same thing happened when he was at UCF - they started great but were getting worse as time went on. Not saying this necessarily will happen at UT but 5 years is a long time - he probably is what we've seen so far. Good coach who did a lot of great things early but we are at the crossroads. By the way other than Alex Golesh I can't really think of any other hire that would make sense to replace him. In this NIL era it's very different from what we had few years ago - seems like a huge gamble to even hire some big name guy (which is why Saban retired - he did not want to deal with the fact he could not out-talent everybody - and this is true for all big name coaches out there). Even Kiffin - I like him but let's be honest Ole Miss had couple of very close calls this year in games they should have won big. If they lost one or two of those he himself could be on hot seat even at Ole Miss. There are a lot of questions but very few answers right now not just for us but CF in general. They let NIL pretty much ruin everything but they can't take it all back to revert to old systme that was much better - that is the real problem.

That’s not a reason. We got beat by a better team.
Better team? We gave that game away with sloppy play and turnovers. Throwing to a FR TE on fourth and one, 6..7 sacks we gave up? Letting their QB run for 22 yards not once but twice.

We should have had that game over with a 24 point first quarter. Instead, sloppy sloppy playing and undisciplined.

Maybe a better coached and prepared team?

That's true. What will be your opinion if we finish 7-5 which seems pretty likely after what we watched last night?
Exactly. With the 9 game SEC schedule next year, just how many will Josh win? He will barely win 8 this year. The schedule gets exponentially tougher From Now On. That schedule will separate the Coaches from the pretenders. Josh is an Offensive Coordinator . PERIOD. Archive this!!

Nobody but what makes you think that’s the standard? We’re not going to be able to brag after every season. There will be good seasons and bad seasons. If we string together bad seasons that’s a problem, but until then there’s no reason to panic.

I posted this in another thread, but it probably fits better under this one. I apologize to those who read it twice.

I remember reading a comment on here, I believe in 2023 when things weren’t going as well as 2022. The poster commented that Josh Heupel’s teams usually look good for a couple of years then the true culture of the team takes over. I think we can see that his teams are undisciplined and have no killer instinct. It is clear that this team has the talent to play GA, AL, OK and win, but can’t get out of their own way. It starts with the coach. He doesn’t have an understanding of the intricacies of the game. He has no killer instinct. He’s playing checkers when other coaches are playing chess. We saw live on TV last night that he doesn’t understand the clock rules. He didn’t know that the clock doesn’t stop when the ball carrier runs out of bounds with more than 2 minutes left, although that has been the rule for 2 or 3 seasons now. He’s not willing to hurt a players feelings when they screw up. He’s not willing to fire coordinators or assistant’s to upgrade at those positions. The rest of this season could be ugly and next season might be worse.

Heupels prolly a decent coach…better than what would be available, but he needs to become more of a CEO than micromanager. Simply can longer be a playcaller and a HC on game day. He needs help with clock management as well. No shame in any of that.

He also needs to grow a pair and start firing people and trying to make upgrades on the staff.

If he trots that same coaching staff out there in 2026, he’s gonna completely lose the fanbase and it’s gonna get ugly.
I think he's got a good offensive mind, and can probably coach a QB room well enough, but he sucks as a HC. I don't think he has the personality or even the desire to do the work that you need to do as a HC to manage the entirety of the team, and that's why he hires from within and retains coaches till they leave on their own.

Those limitations will keep him from achieving on the level required to actually compete for SEC and national championships.

We should temper our expectations going forward. He'll get UT into the playoffs every few years, but that's the ceiling.

If you want a good but not great team, Josh is your guy. If you want to compete for SEC and NCAA Titles, Josh aint your guy.
Totally agree. Stop charging your fans elite ticket prices for average football. Plenty of great coaches out there. Lane Kiffin would actually take our job over Florida or LSU.

Find me another coach doing better that lost their starting QB at the end of spring. If you went into this year thinking we were supposed to go to the playoffs, you're a fool.
This argument holds 0 water. JA has been a massive upgrade. Heupel actually lucked up with that situation happening. We likely have 2 less wins if we don’t lose that QB. Would you be angry if we still had Nico and were sitting on 4 wins?

It’s the resellers that did that and the idiots that kept buying them at 400 plus for a single game. Thats why the market is the way it is.

Do we really want to also be known as the fan base that wants to fire their head coach after a few loses???

Joey's been here since April.
Our best two Corners are hurt.
All our players are made of paper mache.
Boo decides to play the worst football of his life this year.
Our kicker couldn't hit the ocean from the beach and I think I read some reports that Oklahomas kicker may have hit the Titanic with a field goal kick from middle of Oklahoma and that caused it to sink.
Our O line stops blocking the second someone gets around them. They don't even try.

I think the most frustrating thing is that our defense was sooo competent the first quarter. Way more efficient than in months ans we just couldn't come out ahead.

Josh's teams need to be ahead but multiple scores at all times to deal with this wishy washy ****.

There’s a reason our wind total in Vegas was 8.5! After last night, we can all say Joey is not in fact that much better than what we expected. He makes plays and sometimes he’s making plays for the defense.

Josh ain’t Kirby but this one is not on him

He’s not the guy that will compete for championships here. He stabilized the program and that’s great. He’s hit his ceiling. So are we ok with that? I’d say, yes, the majority of our fans are ok with that.

Anyone arguing differently were the same crowd that carried water for Butch Jones until the day he was fired when we saw the writing on the wall in 2015.
I'm for staying with Josh unless we have a sure fire solid big name coach that is available to replace him.

Well that will be never unless an alum comes through the ranks. You aren’t pulling a big name from a power 4 job at Tennessee. You will always have to go coordinator or up and comer route.
