Josh Dobbs (merged)

Who is this you are talking about? Certainly not Dobbs. His arm strength is ELITE. Mike Mayock called it "whippy" during the combine and senior bowl. That's football speak for a very strong arm. As in you can hear the sound the ball makes when Josh throws it. Also during Steelers training camp this year multiple reporters have pointed out how Dobbs has a clearly stronger arm than Rudolph. I posted those tweets earlier in this thread.

No respected football observer have ever doubted Josh's arm strength. Mike Mayock, NFL Network's draft guru, has specifically gone out of his way to say Dobbs has a very strong arm over and over again. If you watched the combine or senior bowl you would have heard this multiple times. The only thing scouts have ever questioned is Dobbs accuracy and decision-making. Not his arm strength.

I didn't say he was Danny Weurffel but he is FAR from elite in arm strength and talent. I mean, the Washington TD last night should have been picked in the end zone because it was freaking duck but Washington bailed Dobbs out. His ability to throw out's past the numbers is indicative of arm strength. His decision making has been more than suspect but you can't seem to figure that out either.

You think the Steelers are stupid enough to put all their eggs in the Mason Rudolph basket?

That guy is AWFUL. And its not me saying that cause he's competing against Dobbs. I had him rated as the 10th best QB in this class before the draft. I watched him extensively in college and was never impressed. I told ya'll after he was drafted that it was a terrible mistake by the Steelers. That if they were unhappy with Dobbs, they should have drafted Lamar Jackson or even Kyle Lauletta. Those guys have starter potential. Mason Rudolph has no potential to be a starter. He's unathletic, can't escape pressure, got a weak arm, and came from a gimmick offense with no NFL concepts.

The Steelers have to be smarter than that. Its one thing to be unsure about Dobbs because of his inconsistency. Its another to hitch your wagon to a guy with far less talent and even more questions.

LOL .. yeah, because Butch Jones was running a pro-style offense for Dobbs right? And no, just because they didn't pick some QB that YOU liked doesn't mean they weren't sold on Dobbs, it means that their guys who get paid to judge talent, sign guys to contracts, pick coaches and win games (all of which they have a history of doing well at) liked who they liked more than who you like. You have about a 7% sample size of success, they have a history of winning games.

You wanted to point out Mike Mayock as the God of judging QBs (and he isn't bad but if he thinks Dobbs has a strong arm he is WAY off) so I'll see your unreferenced Mayock analysis and raise you the Dobbs draft profile with complete analysis of his ability ... among his strengths you'll notice the words "adequate drive velocity" when talking about his passes. QBs with "elite" arm strength aren't said to have adequate drive velocity in case you were stuck on that. Add to that he came in last night in the second half against almost entirely backups for the Packers (although Josh Jackson is a very good corner in the making but still a rook).

Steelers fans critical of Mason Rudolph, Josh Dobbs

Here is last night's floating to the sideline interception again in case you missed it. Not nearly enough velocity to throw an out

2017 NFL Draft Profile: Joshua Dobbs

For the stat geeks out there, cause I know if Josh's numbers were bad ya'll would post them, here are his stats thru 2 preseason games (really 3 quarters of action):

-21/31 (67.7% passing)
-283 yards
-13.5 yards per attempt
-3 TDs
-2 INTs
-101.95 passer rating

-7 rushes
-46 yards
-6.6 YPC

- Led 5 TD drives in 3 quarters of action (team high)

Not bad for a guy ya'll claim has no chance to make the team.

Actually a bit low considering he was going up against mostly rookies, future development squad members, and guys who will be on their couches on Sundays this fall.

Dobbs has improved over last year, but he's not good enough to trust to start and win 1-3 games a season, which is what the Steelers need from a backup.

D4H is so insufferable he has turned people against a great vol QB. jeez

Not believing that Josh Dobbs has the ability to start for an NFL team, is not being against him. His scrambling ability is what made him successful at UT, not the consistency and accuracy of his passing, or his ability to read defenses.

THIS ^^^^^ All day .. and I am not against him either, but calling a guy who may be able to build a career as a serviceable backup but nothing more than a few spot starts "the best QB prospect I've ever evaluated" is like the Sports version of The Onion. Nothing else from him can be taken seriously after stuff like that.

I was lazy in my phrasing that people are “against Dobbs”, but lots are all too happy to see and rub his failures in D4Hs internet face.

He's not failing, he's simply not what D4H is proclaiming him to be, which has been the point all along, and that is what is being thrown in his face.

And sorry if that upsets anyone, but you have the option of not pariticipating in the discussion.

I wouldn't call last night's performance by Dobbs a failure at all, but the reality is that Tomlin relegated him to the second half of the game, and Landry Jones didn't even suit up. Maybe if Dobbs had gone out and demolished Green Bay's rookies and such with his arm, then the discussion on his fate might still be open , but he didn't, and from what it looks like with the current roster there's no way the Steelers keep him unless either he or Rudolph replaces Landry Jones, and neither of them look to be capable of doing so at the moment.

This.

They are rooting for him to fail and when he shows out (like he did last night), they will either ignore it or downplay it.

That's called jumping an out route fool. Every QB has had that happen to him. CB just anticipated it. That was good velocity on Dobbs part.

You must not watch NFL football a lot because that happens to even the greats. Peyton Manning lost the Super Bowl against the Saints on a similar play when the CB jumped his out route and returned it for a TD.

“Failure” in this case, is him not being graded the best QB in the HOF. At least we have an early decision on one of his DECLARATIONS. If Ben doesn’t end his season and allow Dobbs to “hoist the Super Bowl trophy”, then D4H has another wrong prediction...they’re adding up.

if the Steelers let Josh go they'll regret it...:p

GO VOLS!

Of course they will. But I don't think they are that stupid. They can see like the rest of us that Dobbs CLEARLY has the most POTENTIAL of the backup QBs to develop into a starter. Mason Rudolph is not the answer. He's trash. Landry Jones is simply a backup.

Sure Josh is inconsistent and will make a bad throw here and there. But he's also a playmaker who can make plays the others can't. Plus his skill set is tantilizing. Tall, athletic, and big armed. If Steelers released him, there would be 25 teams clamoring to sign him on their active roster.

So is Paxton Lynch and he will be on the street in a few weeks. Dobbs can have a solid career in the NFL, but not as a starter. I'm not rooting for Dobbs to fail, I am just being realistic.
