JG aside, our lack of a strong RB is killing us

I've said all along we need a Jamal Lewis type. 6' 235. A Man that hits the hole and punishes the D. I got a lot of flack from it. They know I'm right.

That is just dumb. The running game is not ineffective or effective because of the qb. The Rb and oline have 90% of the running game responsibility.

Wrong.

Any run game you see in college is effective because other defenders are held at bay due to offensive weapons on the perimeter.

Jarret Gaurantano can't consistently create a passing threat.

Hard to block 8 with 5 no room to run, not blaming just JG but thats what happens when the defense doesn't respect a QBs throwing ability. Play calling didnt help but we're so damn limited with our QB situation
Exactly. Defenses aren't scared to blitz JG because they know it's only once in a blue moon that he might burn them. Plus, JG panics too easily

Gray and Chandler go down way to easy. You really don’t see any Yards after contact from either. In the past we’ve had a better run game with a way lower overall quality o line due to having a good feature back who had speed and size. Do we have anyone on campus or recruit wise who may eventually fill this glaring hole? Will Cody Brown be that guy? Its nuts that a 2021 recruit is already bigger than our current RBs by 25 lbs
We have an offensive line that has simply quit! Is it because of JG or other players? Are the players gambling on the games? There is simply NO EXCUSE for the lousy play!!!

The whole problem starts and ends with the QB. Defenses do not respect the downfield threat he represents. No one can run the ball when there are so many people in the box and they never get burned. It will be this way until that dude leaves or gets benched. I know some said he played great on Saturday during the first half, but I disagree. the stats say he didnt screw up the game until the second half, but he didnt keep us in it in the first half. The defense did.

Get a QB who poses a downfield threat with his arm, poses an escape threat with his legs and watch the offense start moving the ball easily.

The QB can have every effect on the running game. Think of it this way if offensive theory is a bit too complicated for you, both teams have 11 guys on the field. We have a guy running the ball and a guy handing it off, so we are down to 9 guys. We have 2 WR who are running routes, so we are down to 7 guys. They have 2 guys covering our 2 wr, so they are down to 9 guys. Our 7 guys struggle to block their 9 guys. Now if we had a QB who could play action pass and beat them on deeper passes, they would have to put more guys in the secondary to cover space and that would leave them with 7 guys. Our 7 guys against their 7 guys would have the advantage and we could run the ball.

so tell me again how the QB has nothing to do with running the ball?????

Just one of the deficiencies. After last weekend, it's pretty clear we have needs all over the field. TE, CB, OLB, DE and yes...QB. I'd also suggest a new OL and QB coach might be in order.

I agree with this post. Going back and looking, as much as I love EG, his ability to pick up blitzers and block out of the backfield on Saturday was abysmal. Watching carefully, he deserves as much blame on a few of those sacks and pressures as any OL.

The biggest problem with the oline is having a QB who can't read a defense and change the presnap protection.

The second biggest problem with the online is that they are coached by Will Friend.

We fix the first two problems, we'll be able to open up the running game with the backs we have on the roster.

Agreed. The RBs we have starting this year were recrutied by Bama and most other SEC schools as well. Our RBs sze is not the issue with our running game. Go look at the grades handed out to our OL on running plays against UGA. Most are down in the 30s. Decide whether that is due to the superior defense or us just being inept for yourselves.

Lack of substituting Gray Or Chandler with a big body got JG killed Saturday. I was waiting for them to put someone else in there that could actually block. They ran through them over and over again. We do need someone that isn't as easy to take down with the first hit. A guy that falls for 3 yards would help a lot.

Sanders is too small.
Haha that is what they told him his whole life only to acheieve 4th all time rushing yards in NFL while playing for the worst team in the NFL during his tenure. Imagine what he would have done at Dallas, or Chicago during the time Smith & Payton were playing for those teams.

The running game isn't effective because every NCAA coach knows that JG can't read a defense, and can't beat them with his arm. He has one throw, the 50/50 ball, that's it. So if you have a half-decent secondary, you can bring pressure all day long.

We've seen it time and again with JG as QB.

He’s not a feature back RUNNING wise. Dynamic as a change up but no workhorse. Needs a Mark Ingram type to complement. After Hurd departed, he couldn’t hold up against SC. It’s a BVS thing to lament perceived loss. He led the SEC in total yards in 2016 and had less yards rushing than the preceding season. We definitely could have used him more, but a majority of posters here were inconsolable after Hurd was announced out for the A&M game. Met up with @UT_Dutchman at a tailgate and we were excited about the possibilities with Hurd/Kelly...we were in the minority. He needed a Kelly at least...even then. He can’t be that centerpiece in the backfield for an entire NFL season. Even last night he had 45 yards rushing...that’s not dominant.

Ingram is only 5’9” 215 as an NFL rusher. Gray is 5’10” and Chandler is 5’11”... both are 205.

Guys and gals, all of this COULD point to a drop off in S&C which was a huge concern of mine going into this season. We promoted a guy who basically had zero Power 5 S&C experience. To me that was risky and borderline asinine when you consider we had front row tickets to what happens when we fail to replace an experienced S&C coach with an experienced S&C coach. Getting tacked easy, getting pushed around and not getting off blocks can all be associated with strength.
