Jalen's Mom has a Message Regarding his Underage Consumption

Do you realize how many kids are on college campuses without cars? Jalen was simply being a good friend, did nothing wrong exept pop a cold one in the privacy of his own dorm/apartment.

Smart kid. Drinking in public is the #1 way of getting caught as an underage drinker.

Long Post

Forget the mention of the 4th Amendment. I brought up in several posts the law as it is applied in the state of TN. I have provided a link to what the law allows, an excerpt of Tennessee's law regarding entering someone's living quarters, and a video showing this very scenario where a student filmed himself denying police and an RA entry to his room, where they then forced themselves in and then subsequently got fired for breaking the law. 3 things have been provided to back up my argument.

This seems like such a non issue. I got popped with 4 other guys at age 18 because a buddy had an open bottle crammed under his car seat that only he knew about. I paid a 10 fine, no court costs and it was expunged. I went and checked the court docket book a couple of years later and someone had taken a black magic marker and completely obliterated any trace of it from the court records. I think we've gone completely overboard with the whole ratcheting up on penalties concerning teenagers and alcohol.

I started school in 72. Our RA got worried if he didn't smell weed.

The RA we had put a notice on everyone's door.
We forgot about the room check, when we opened the door, he saw a bottle of vodka and just said he would come back later. No big deal.

Some of these militant RAs on here would have gotten a blanket party.

I am actually not arguing against you, I am providing some deeper context that the conclusory viewpoints being provided here about searches and government intrusions. I will let you get back to exploring the boundaries of the civil landlord/tenant law which as far as I can tell has little, if any, application to Jalen Hurd being questioned by police outside his dorm room.

The drinking age for public consumption should be 16. Driving license should be 19. In home consumption should be at parental discretion.

JMHO. Germany is well ahead of us on this.

I am totally on your side mama Jalen. We have too many cops in this era that are like Barney Fife and not enough Andy Griffiths. In my day, the authorities commended young men in college that drank alcohol in safe locations rather than in public where things could go wrong. IMO, this cop was just trying to put a feather in his hat, than applying common sense. The officer should get a parent chewing. I know my late father would have tore an arse plum off of the cop if it was the same situation applied to me when I was in college.

I haven't read all the posts here but a few comments:

1) Way to go, Momma Hurd!!!!

2) How long has there been a 'legal' drinking age law?

3) How long has there been underage drinking?

4) How many of you here on VN have ever drank alcohol when you weren't of legal age?? Or refused to drink cause you were too young to do so?

The point I'm trying to make is no matter what kind of laws there are about what age is appropriate to be drinking....people of all ages will drink.

CHEERS!!!!

If you're old enough to die for this country, then you should be old enough to drink in the privacy of your home.

It sounds cliche but it's so true...

I love America, but our drug/alcohol laws (along with the minimum sentencing bs) are ridiculous and violate the very nature of our Constitution. As we have already proven and continue to prove, prohibition doesn't work and leads to highly profitable criminal organizations (mobsters in the early 20th century and the cartels of contemporary times). If not for the countless dollars wasted fighting this lost cause, our our drug policy would be laughable.

The Media in Tennessee has always been very anti establishment.. Those guys would wind up falling "up" some stairs if they lived in Alabama writing the way they have for nearly all my life.. John Adams wouldn't have lasted but maybe 3 sunday editions.. Either the UT PR department really.... really... sucks, or the people who really run the show(high dollar boosters) don't control the media like they do here in Alabama..

Drinking age was 18 when I was younger. It didn't change to 21 until after I had been in the Marine Corps for a few years.

I remember at 16 getting pulled over with a couple of friends of mine. We had beer (which we walked into the store and bought ourselves, because no one ever ID'd us) in the car. Cop made us pour it out and said he didn't want to see us again that night or he would call our parents.

Hell at 17 I was going to the "Classic Cat" strip club in Nashville....never once got ID'd. Ahhhh, the good 'ol days. They did it right at the "Cat". Was BYOB. All they served was the mixers.

Actually, they can. I'm an RA at Carson-Newman and I've busted people for having alcohol in the dorm. If you live on campus (and this goes for any campus) you are not allowed to have any type of alcohol. When you sign the letter to live in an on campus room, you agree to abide by residence life standards, and that includes room searches. If we know someone has alcohol in their room, we conduct a room search through everything they have. We go through their fridge, closet, bed, everything. If we find any alcohol or illegal substance, then we contact security and then they will contact the police. If it's someone underage, then the cops will show up and go through the room without a warrant. It's a res life policy that applies for most U.S. colleges. These guys know the rules. Don't be stupid.

This post explains your avi.

We know, you were just following orders.:machgun:

Give me a break with all the self righteous bull****. Any college student that chooses to drink, watch a movie maybe with his girl friend in the privacy of his dorm should be commended. We have had college athletes killed in parties across town numerous times over the years across the country. This deal is a cop being a total douche bag. I've done some things in my past involving alcohol, but the hometown cops told my dad we think you can handle the situation better than we can. They were right, rather than having marks that scar you for life, I righted my ship. Cops now days can't wait to punish youths these days. I think they are on a quota now. Instead of using common sense and being compassionate to what's best, they want to be able to claim that they arrested this many people during this certain month. This situation reminds me of the episode where Barney arrests the whole town, granted they were breaking the law, but Andy had to come back and use common sense to save the day. We need more Andys and less Barney Fifes in this country.
