Hope he does fantastic and he'll get my support (not that he or anyone else really cares).

I can't help feeling like I would if my school hired CPF after he got let go by Tennessee, or an NBA team hiring all stars past their prime (and in no way do I mean that as an age-based criticism). There was a reason Texas let CRB go.

I like it, proven head coach to bring in stability. Wonder what they are going to pay him?

I'm on board. His resume speaks for itself. A 600+ win coach with 6 sweet sixteens and a final four appearance??

Is he instantly the most accomplished coach ever hired by Tennessee? Arguably Coach Majors was more accomplished when hired, but I can't think of anyone else.

Home run hire, imo. We should be a perennial ncaa tournament team for the next 6-8 years, and will likely have a couple sweet 16 or elite 8 runs mixed in, as well as a major influx in talent on the hill and no NCAA issues!!

The kool aid tastes good boys, have a sip.

Yeah, he wouldn't fire his assistants.

Yeesh texas guy taking shots

@kbohls: Interesting that Tennessee AD Dave Hart tried to hire Charlie Strong but couldn't get him.

Don't think it was a shot at all. That guy loves Barnes. It's just true, and interesting to him.

Per Rob Lewis

We'll pile on here and add that everything we're hearing makes it seems to us that Tennessee and Rick Barnes are approaching a deal.

We've heard from multiple sources that Tennessee officials have met at an off-campus location today with a potential candidate. As noted previously, we've got solid information that Barnes flew out of Texas last night. Additionally, in talking with multiple people we can't locate anyone who can confirm that Dave Hart has been in his office today.

We haven't been able to nail down beyond a shadow of doubt that Barnes is in town, but there is a lot of circumstantial evidence to strongly suggest that's the case. However, we're going to stop just short of saying that's a gospel fact as we've not been able to confirm that from primary sources.

Additionally, we've heard that some sort of negotiation is already underway to address the assistant coaches' salary pool. That would be in keeping with Barnes being 'the guy' as his loyalty to his staff at this point is well documented and it's a veteran group that would probably be looking for significantly more than what was being paid to Tyndall's staff last year. If Tennessee were in negotiations with a mid-major type coach, it's doubtful that assistant's pay would be something coming up at the moment.

Everything we're hearing seems to strongly suggests that Barnes is going to be the guy and that contract details are being discussed but we feel like things are still in the negotiating stages with nothing signed as of yet.

I wonder if the payoff by Texas has the provision that it is to be reduced by salary paid by a new employer. If that's the case, either pay him $4,000,000 or $25,000.

I was one of the posters who was strongly against hiring Barnes. I was constantly arguing that he isn't a long term solution and seems to lack the fire and passion a coach will need to rebuild our program. I believe him to be a little washed up and past his prime.

With all of that said, welcome aboard Coach Barnes. You have my full support. Hopefully a change of scenery will work wonders for him. Maybe it puts a little pep back into his step. A move to Tennessee could resurrect his career. He will need to hit the ground hard as far as recruiting goes. This years class will probably be a wash. I wouldn't expect any miracles. It would be nice if he could land one big surprise. He's currently got two 4 star SGs committed to Texas, I think he should try to steer them this way.

A quick search shows one of the SGs is a Texas boy, and the other is from Michigan. If I had to guess off the top of my head, I'd say Davis (the one from Michigan) would come here before Roach. Davis is 6'3 with a ton of top offers and is the 45th ranked player in the nation. Roach is 6'3 too, and ranked 51st over all, respectfully.

If I was Coach Barnes, my first actions as the coach at Tennessee would be to call those two players, followed by Blackwell and Ado.

GO VOLS!!!
