Fulmer to _____ if we don’t fire Majors
Interesting hypothetical.
I certainly think he'd want to stay in the southeast, and preferably in the SEC. He would also have more exposure, and so more likely offers, around there.
Have to believe he would be itching for a head coach position sooner rather than later, starting about the same time he got the nod at Tennessee. So probably '93 or '94, maybe as late as '95 or '96 but the first two years are most likely.
In '93, Auburn and Arkansas were both looking for a new coach. Auburn seems the better fit. So maybe Phillip goes there instead of them picking up Terry Bowden.
A year later, in '94, Clemson and South Carolina are both in the market. No idea which of these would be more likely.
Later, in '95 and '96, Georgia, LSU and Ole Miss all come open. Is it Fulmer instead of Jim Donnan at UGa? In place of Gerry DiNardo in Baton Rouge? Or Phillip instead of Tommy Tuberville at Ole Miss?
Of all those purely hypothetical possibilities, I'd have to put my money on Auburn in '93. If we hadn't gotten him, I think that's where he'd be.
