Is Helfrich @ OC a legit discussion?

Assuming Debord leaves, The new OC needs complete control. Along with that new OC, we need a line coach that can progress players not get worse. QD starts if Debord is there. JG if someone else IMO.

No Assistant coach gets "complete" control. The Assistant coaches work for Butch Jones not the OC or DC. They all answer to Butch!

That is why OC and DC doesn't hire assistants. Do they get a little say in what they feel the Offense or Defense need? Sure, but Ultimately Butch Jones gets the final say.

It is that way in every program in America! Shoop doesn't hire assistants and neither does DeBord, Butch does. It is Butch's Staff!

P.S. JG wins the job either way!!!:)

By complete control, I mean no limitations on offense. Yes, Butch is the head hog. He is like the manager in baseball that has the final say but his other coaches do all the work. You show me a successful program and I'll show you a smart head coach that has surrounded himself with great assistant coaches.

I agree but those coaches still surround themselves with Yes men who carry the same philosophy they do. Saban is a prime example do you think any play is ran on defense of offense that Nick doesn't hear in his ear before the signal ever leaves the sidelines?

Saban is such a control freak he doesn't even let his coaches talk to the media unless it is mandatory, like bowls and media days. So no assistant has anything close to complete control, except for the illusion of control.:)

As long as the HC bears the responsibility, he has the control. Have you once ever heard a HC, when discussing a questionable play call in a post-game presser, say this: "That's the call the OC made, the offense is his responsibility. He has control."

I have not.

Blackburn gonna fix err thang
I don't think people will hang around mid February. If anyone is going to get hired it will have to be Hart hiring assistants or coordinators. We will be lucky to get Blackburn... Tennessee will find a way to screw it up.

I don't see why not.. The ducks are the greatest offense in college football.
And he's got rings on every finger.
Hold up that's saban..

That's where Blackburn comes in. Tennessee has the money and big time donors to run with the elite programs, and obviously you have to appease them. However, Blackburn will do what is best for the Tennessee program, not our donors. I am not saying he will ignore them, but he will have a good way of working with them and still doing what is best for the program. Plus I think the boosters will be a lot more comfortable with Blackburn and knowing that he is someone who understands how to run a program and how to take Tennessee to the next level. It's only a bonus that he is a Tennessee guy.

How do you know this? He has never been an AD at UT Knoxville and the situation at UT Chattanooga is NOTHING like what is in Knoxville.

No it's not. Quarter of the operating budget AND fanbase. Best program in the conference after he arrived. Don't need that in Knoxville. :)

Well, certainly aided simply by App State and Georgia Southern leaving the conference.

If Alabama and Florida left the conference... we'd be riding pretty high now too. ;)

Would you count it against our AD's performance if they did? :)

I don't care HOW he did it. He had the job and he performed. I'm sure if he hadn't you would have included that in your notes. :wink2:

No we're losing to Vandy and USCe now so might get us to middle of the pack. :)

I wasn't necessarily talking about the budget. The fans there are not as dramatic as the ones that support the Vols and not as likely to kick a coach to the curb. Huesman was never pressured even when he went 6-5, 6-5, 5-6, and 6-5 his first four years. Even after that he had at least 3 losses in each regular season and ended each year with 4 losses.

Welcome to FCS! :) Play FBS teams every season to supplement that budget...so factor at least two losses every season in there. Saw enough to stick with him and hired two excellent basketball coaches to boot. Excellent decision maker.

He has no clue what he is jumping into at UT. Gonna be a complete culture shock Im sure.

They left the conference. UTC stopped playing them and they stopped losing to them. :)

I'm talking about the previous AD. He just let them win and didn't do a thing about it. Blackburn arrives and they go away. Get things done! :)
