We won't know. That is alternate history. There is probably a Youtube video out there that some alt history person has made about it.

He may not have played things so poorly. Had he backed the Shah there very likely would have been a successful and very bloody revolution to oust him, which wouldn't have helped us at all.

Iran will go right back to enriching, trying to build a device etc and Israel will beat the brakes off them AGAIN before Trump leaves office. 100% on Iran.

Declassified docs show Carter was in communication with Khomeini in France. Invited him into Iran. He made efforts to dissuade the army from acting. Told Khomeini it didn’t appear that the Iranian military would support the Shah, which was a green light. Made efforts to reconcile the Army and Khomeini. Told someone in his administration he thought Khomeini was another Mahatma Ghandi. Accepted the Shah into the U.S. after all of that. Stuff like that. Lied about it all.
