I'm Going Vegetarian...

Hmmm...I would hardly think a God would allow his country to be inhabited by such disappointments of the human race. But whatever.

There are great people here who do great things in many ways. But, the subject of Animal Rights is, for some reason, taboo around the South.

ONCE AGAIN, I have never said that we should not eat meat (and, I don't believe the OP did either). It's just a matter of treatment and whether or not we could feasibly do a better job in how we handle animals.

The really bothersome part is that a person starts a thread explaining his Vegetarian decision and is met by such intelligent and courteous responses questioning his Manhood and bragging about their meat-eating endeavors. If we live by the Golden Rule, is that really the way to react?

It is a message board. Don't take all the comments so seriously. You're talking to a guy that pays someone to come to his house to look after his dog when he is out of town. Typical southerner huh? :p

I did, and whole I'll never criticise anyone for their choices in food, putting down the South and using the insults you did is just as bad.

Well, the majority of the posters above did just that. Remember, "closed-minded" and "set-in-its-ways" are not necessarily bad traits, as long as a culture has its ideals set appropriately. I agree with most of Southern Thought, but split whole-heartedly with the general lack of empathy for animals used as food.

Sorry, since I'm from the south, I'm new to the whole "internets" thing. Maybe I should go to an open minded area of the country like, say, San Francisco.

Utter hog wash like branding a whole region as dumb and clueless should be left off message boards, I would think.

Yeah, that's what they do in Russia.:p

My brother is a devout Vegan and I have done a fair amount of research into animal treatment, so it's a fairly motivating topic to me. Look: I dig my pets too (except when they crap the floor or my bird takes a chunk out of my ear). Is it really so much to ask for people to sympathize with animals that have body parts brutally removed while alive and those that are crammed into quarters too small to even allow turning around or walking?

Can't say I'd be fan of any of that. But also could not give up meat.

Then, look into how mass-market meat is handled. Most people turn a blind eye and claim indifference, but they wouldn't even be able to watch if they had to see how animals are actually treated.

Break down the wall and do a little looking. . . .I think you'll get it. I'm not preaching Vegatarianism, but we could all demand better treatment, buy free-range products, and limit our consumption. Fair?

"God's Country" is meant to refer to the beautiful natural surroundings, not the disappointing culture that makes fun of a man for making a stand for Animal Rights while proclaiming kindness and humility.

Gsvol, I think you're just jealous. You want to be a vegetarian.

I had a Boca burger last night. I'm not kidding when I say this... it tasted better than real meat.

Lmao. Boca burgers are some of the most disgusting things ever to be invented.

you are putting human qualities on to animals. chickens don't care if they are crammed into quarters too small. some animals actually like to be put in cages. it gives them a sense of safety and calms them down. if you have no problem killing a cockroach you should have no problem killing a chicken or a cow.

How's it going, VOLatile? Interested to see how you are feeling.

I'm sure you expected the reaction you got from many, but that's what you get in a closed-minded, set-in-its-ways, and hypocritical society such as the South.

I, for one, hope you are doing well. If you do decide to go back to eating meat, remember the ideals that initially drove you, and try to make reasonable choices, if you are financially able.

I'm doing great! As I read this, I am eating a half veggie, half pineapple pizza. It's delicious. Now I'm off to read the rest of this thread. Looks to be interesting.

Ahhh... I'm so exhausted I can't even begin to respond to everything, but thanks for caring and defending me and animals, Kiddiedoc.

Probably need some meat in your diet.

Or the fact that I drove 6 hours into a new time zone, went swimming. Got up at 6:30 EST and spent the entire day on my feet taking pictures of robots. Finally getting to eat. And I have to get up and do it all over again tomorrow. I'm not complaining, though. I'm enjoying myself.

And being a vegetarian presents many new challenges. I like it, a lot.
