I suppose my perception is based on what I see in Fountain City, which is a small part of Knoxville.Knoxville is much safer now than the 90s or early 2000s. Same with most of the US.
Maybe you are just older and realize what's going on and there are sketchy places in any city.

WTF is the deal with breadsticks? Some pizzeria owner one day thought to himself "I know what people will want with their bread dinner....more bread!" And then the world went for it?! I don't get it at all. Would you like pizza and also pizza without toppings, but butter and garlic?

I do like lots of cheese though - the stringy stuff that keeps the other good things from falling off.
There is definitely a limit, but yeah, cheese is good. It's really hard to find bad pizza, but my favorite is medium-crust, supreme toppings, and I don't like it when the marinara is sweet. I don't **** around much with thin crust or deep dish, but I'll definitely eat it if somebody else gets it. I don't **** around with specialty pizza much, but if you order chicken bacon ranch or whatever, I'll definitely eat it.
The one thing I am truly snobby about is pineapple on pizza. GTFO
