If you are Barnes, what would you do...

This is an interesting point I have seen nobody mention, especially considering the number of people who want to say Barnes was only successful because of Grant...

Do y’all realize Porter Moser was fired from Illinois State for his performance there being unsatisfactory?

Pre-Krutwig and Moser has been a coach for 13 seasons, never finished above 5th in conference standings and never playing in the NCAAT or even NIT tournament.
People blindly saying things without knowledge run the world. According to some, most every team is unsuccessful because their season ends in a loss for a big majority of teams.

Ask fans of UVA, Tx, Illinois, The OSU, Purdue, etc how they felt Monday morning. They probably want to get new coaches from the soup de jour list

YES - I've been trying to tell people this. Same hill I tried to die on with Shaka Smart. Everyone thought he was the white whale for a P5 when he was at VCU, but the guy caught lightning in a bottle for five games. Took over a very successful program, never won a regular season title once in six seasons.

We badly need another shooter and a skilled post player. Vescovi is the only pure shooter and everyone else is more of a mid-range player. JJJ is a good shooter if he is open but he plays more like a slasher type. Maybe he will be more aggressive but we will see. All the ball handlers had a puddle at their feet anytime they were slightly pressured but hopefully Chandler will solve that issue. He’s a stud. Mashack will fit in nicely as well. If we land BHH on top of those guys, that would fill most of our needs with the incoming class.

While this is true, there’s more to it than that for Porter. Loyola didn’t have a lot of talent when he took over and they made a big jump in conferences after his 3rd season which really set the program development back for a couple more years (compared to their competition). Obviously Krutwig helped elevate the program, but they were poised to be good that year with or without him. I’d expect sustained success for the next several years based on their freshman and sophomore classes.

What should Barnes do? Guess right! But it's harder than it looks.

For kicks, I just looked up Cameron Krutwig's 247 listing from his senior year. He was a 3 star, listed as the 348th player and the #32 center nationally. He had three offers: Loyola, Vermont and UAB.

Lots of misses in America that go round. Rob Lanier flipped Zach Kent from Northwestern to the Vols that year. He was the 203rd player and the #18 center nationally. Seemed like a good pick up at the time. Think Krutwig could have helped the Vols this year?

I would recruit a couple of 6’10 bigs who could shoot, rebound, run the floor, and block shots as well as another point guard.

He’s already hitting the transfer portal hard and has Chandler, Mashack, and BHH coming in.

We’ll be fine next year to make a tournament run.
He is? BHH isn’t a done deal and I’ve yet to see a transfer. He needs to transfer some players out.

I would fly to Chicago as soon as the tournament is over and pick the brain of the Loyola coach. With our defense, we should have been what they are, but we don’t have the big man or the offensive efficiency (also run way less screens)
I would pick up sister Jean too

That could be, I'm not familiar with their recruiting, but I do see 5 seniors among their top 7 rotational players this year and that suggests a step back in the next couple of years depending on how many go or stay. It's really hard to find a player at any level who executes the system as well as Krutwig does, he won't be easy to replace. Maybe this recent success will be the spark that resets Moser's career or maybe he'll be the Mercer coach who had some good years with a particular group of players and dropped back to mediocrity when they were gone. As I said, it will be interesting to see what happens, but I'm not making any predictions.

No doubt they’ll take somewhat of a step back after this group leaves (although I wouldn’t be surprised if most came back next year). I do think they’ll be back in the dance in two years though given what I’ve seen from their young guys. Full disclosure, I’m a bit biased being an alumni so take it with a grain of salt.

Ah, gotcha, this has been a lot of fun for you no doubt. Of course, being a vol fan, I'm still disappointed over 2018 so there's a little bias in my view as well.😏 BTW, I'm old enough to remember the 1963 team and still think Loyola deserves a lot of credit for doing the right thing in such divisive times.
