With the roster now transitioned, I guess we're about to find out. What I really question....in addition to his schemes are his evals and hiring of buddies. Maybe he explodes this year and I eat my words, but I think it's more likely we have a pedestrian season. Even if that happens, he'll be able to fall back on the Nico excuse. Guy has 9 lives.I see a lot of similarities to what UCF fans said on the day of the hire. Particularly in regards to clock management at the end of half’s? Halves? Whatever the word is. They were dead on about it. I think his recruiting is better because he’s starting to realize that he just flat out can’t out scheme Kirby. Hes lost ONE game at Neyland in 3 full seasons and it was to UGA. Thats not screaming “his time is winding down”.

That's my concern also. Frankly, it's all about the QB for Heupel. So far his best QB/offense was a Pruitt holdover that needed an injury to Milton in order to get the job. Combine that with the Nico fiasco and it's not a real encouraging look for the "former-Heisman-offensive-guru". Hey, we all love the guy and are hoping he's here for the long haul. The off-season "QB-switcheroo" has set the table for boom or bust.I fear he has a high floor BUT has about hit his ceiling. Time will tell.
"But we should beat them". We've said this every year for the last 20 years. What's that record again?I think of those 3, if we only are picking one, would be beating florida in the swamp. Beating uga is probably the hardest of the three and beating bama would mean more to the fans, but there just seems to be some weird voodoo or something when it comes to florida. I think if we overcome that, we reset the culture mentally. The expectation should be to beat them all, but given the talent level of uga and bama for such a long time, realistically those are more difficult. Beat the teams you should beat. We should be beating florida regularly. They are better this year than they have been recently, so it will be harder. But we should beat them.
I believe we all WANT the program to be elite and I would certainly like to see all those thing come to pass this year but I am not for drawing some arbitrary lines in the sand. We all know or should know where the program was when CJH was hired and the self imposed restrictions and NCAA restrictions placed on the program. Staff has done a superb job closing the talent gap but there's still a gap. The shackles are off, if he NEEDS to do anything is recruit T5 recruiting classes which is a tall order, that's the another step forward. He's done some great things and crosses thresholds.
Ifyouwe WANT this program to be elite, he needs to take another step.
So he can go 8-4 in year 5 and you're happy if he has a top 5 recruiting class?I believe we all WANT the program to be elite and I would certainly like to see all those thing come to pass this year but I am not for drawing some arbitrary lines in the sand. Did I say anything about going 8-4? NO! Understood perfectly what the OP posted. You can think what you want, frankly don't care.So he can go 8-4 in year 5 and you're happy if he has a top 5 recruiting class?
The OP didn't say "it's year 5, he needs to win 11 games" or a playoff game. He gave him THREE options. They could lose to Georgia and Florida AGAIN and beat Bama and, despite that being another 2+ loss season, he'd be happy (as long as it's not a crazy bad year).
I don't think he's being unreasonable by saying NEED. If Heupel doesn't do ANY of those things he's losing at least 3 games, which will point to him being just a "good but not great coach" in many folks eyes.
It was an off-hand comment not unlike your own, and I'm completely aware of the topic. Now PO you touchy little hall monitor.Number 1. Kirby WAS UGAs coach when Jones scored our last win.
Number 2 - the entire topic of this conversation outside of beating UGA …is winning in Gainesville and Tuscaloosa. It’s not about whether or not Heupel is a better coach than Jones. He obviously is. You guys are so excited to share your football knowledge with the class that you can’t even exhibit basic reading comprehension. ^^^^ Everything you said up there WE ALL KNOW.
He's not shown any tendency to deflect from coaching responsibility. Is what you term a gimmick offense his scheme, or he leaned on that heavily in his first couple years to give the team a shot and bridge the talent gap? He's recruited well, has his own stable, and the worst of the sanctions are behind us. IMO we'll learn more about Heupel over the next couple seasons than we have prior. With the roster now transitioned, I guess we're about to find out. No it’s not. It’s possible our best QB would be third string on that team, even though i don’t think Milton is good. Hooker was our second best QB ever. We don’t know if running back is better. It probably isn’t, but maybe Peyton Lewis really bursts on to the scene. Receiver is definitely not better, this isn’t even close. These tight ends are probably about the same at this juncture but have more potential. O Line is not better at this juncture mostly because Wright had the right side absolutely locked down, I don’t expect Sanders to equal that as a freshman. D Line is probably roughly the same (that D line was not bad at all, last year’s D Line was better but this one will take a step back). Linebacker is probably better. D backs are better if McCoy gets back to 100%, probably about the same if he is not himself. Is the current roster not better than the 2022 roster, the team that went 11-2, was at one time ranked #1, and barely missed making the playoffs? I would argue the only position that's not better is QB.
Agree. I see little chance we beat them in the swamp unless:Florida’s roster is top 5 good. Especially on offense. Bookmark this post.
If Lagway stays healthy they are absolutely loaded. OL is a top 5 OL by essentially every location. Baugh is a great back. They are deep at RB. At WR they are deep too.
He probably wouldn’t have, but next time we hire an alumnus who finished 2nd in the Heisman and is coming off a national championship, then maybe you can make that comparisonOle Johnny Majors would have never survived this crowd. In his 5th went 1-4 on the road, making road record 6-16. Manage to defend Neyland going 6-0. But after 5 he was 0-2 against Georgia, 0-5 against Bama, 3-2 against Kentucky. Overall 29-27-1 and 13-17 against SEC opponents. Best SEC finish tied for 4th.
Yep would've never survived.
