I don't know what I'd do about the D.

change = more of the same and a longer road to recovery unless there is a home run hire. Beware what you wish for.

You must be lost. What has Dools done that almost ANY new coach couldn't do better? Absolutley nothing. I can't wait for this WAC coach to get the hell out of dodge because that's the only time Tennessee will get back to prominence

Question is would Jack be a better DC then Sal? btw, still remember Hubert Simpson and the Vols beating Vegas and Notre Dame's axx. About three hours after the game I saw Hubert and Margie Ison of all people sharing a few lines. Ahhhh those were the days

Remember listening on the radio to that one, too. 40-18 at Neyland.

Margie Isom! Man i hadn't heard that name in years. Had a major kid crush on her.

I've coached football. I played at the collegiate level. Granted it was nowhere near the SEC or even anything to be considered big time football but I've got some understanding of the game and how it works. That said, I have absolutely no idea what I'd do with our defense ; specifically our secondary.

For the most part this season the plays have been situationally right. There were a few times today when I questioned why we didn't drop two safeties, but the overall scheme seems right most of the time. Before anyone jumps on this statement, understand that the success or failure of a specific play doesn't automatically mean it was right or wrong. Sometimes you call the right play and get burned deep and sometimes you call the wrong play and sack the qb for a 10yard loss. The plays seem right most of the time. We're just not executing.

I don't believe a new coach would bring success with this depleted defense. We're lacking too much talent. We're certainly lacking too much execution. Maybe you guys see something I don't. Enlighten me. What could another coach do with this defense that Dooley / Sunseri aren't?

I really don't know a whole lot about football. Well I didn't play, but I have watched a lot over the years. What did you think about Brian Griese's critique on 3rd and 26 against USC? We played 1 deep safety. Moore couldn't make the play. I just didn't understand it. We dropped the linebackers but about 10-15 yards knowing that they needed 26. Either blitz and make them throw quickly or drop 3-4 deep. Just didn't understand.

With the lack of speed in this D, they should play a 4-3 cover 2 with five underneath and try a bend but don't break philosophy. Very similar to stuff Wilcox had to do.

Wilcox has done a really good job with Washington's D. He probably didn't get enough credit when he was here. Chavis deserves a little more credit as well.

Sal is that you?

Well the answer is simple, just follow the Nick Saban plan.

Hire Sunseri as LB's coach
Hire a proven DC
Recruit 5* players

Bingo Jackson!

I have coached as well and we really struggle getting matched up right. Also, and this drives me crazy, we get the offense in third and long rush 3 and drop back into zone leaving LBs matched against WRs. Watch bama and LSU if they get you in third and long they drop their corners 5 to 7 yards off and blitz forcing a quick throw make the tackle get off the field. Done the same thing when I coached and the percentages are in your favor.

I like it - can you come coach the next few games for us?

It has been a long time since I played but even then - on 3 rd and long we would know the situation, yards needed and drop 5 to 7 off on the corners. Safeties would drop a couple of yards as well to keep everything in front of them.

1. teach them how to tackle
2. make sure they can count to 11

time to be real.
i have noticed the def. line stand up at the point of attack and also they line up further off the ball then most def. lines. our front three are big men but not athletic.
we are just slow all around you cant teach speed. i think the only way we can get better is, better and more consitent recruiting. maybe

I saw everything I needed to see when Sal would get his whiteboard out and trot over to the players...the look of disdain on their faces and their body language while he was trying to coach them up said it all. Borderline complete disregard.

Lack of speed does not justify a safety not breaking up a long pass when he is running downhill towards the receiver. Troy's last touchdown is the perfect example. Every other safety in college football would have cleaned the receivers clock on that touchdown catch. Our safety crosses right in front of the guy and NEVER touches him. It looked like a defender in basketball trying not to foul a guy on a layup. That is coaching but it also shows the soft nature of our secondary not wanting to hit anybody.
