I don't know what I'd do about the D.

I've coached football. I played at the collegiate level. Granted it was nowhere near the SEC or even anything to be considered big time football but I've got some understanding of the game and how it works. That said, I have absolutely no idea what I'd do with our defense ; specifically our secondary.

For the most part this season the plays have been situationally right. There were a few times today when I questioned why we didn't drop two safeties, but the overall scheme seems right most of the time. Before anyone jumps on this statement, understand that the success or failure of a specific play doesn't automatically mean it was right or wrong. Sometimes you call the right play and get burned deep and sometimes you call the wrong play and sack the qb for a 10yard loss. The plays seem right most of the time. We're just not executing.

I don't believe a new coach would bring success with this depleted defense. We're lacking too much talent. We're certainly lacking too much execution. Maybe you guys see something I don't. Enlighten me. What could another coach do with this defense that Dooley / Sunseri aren't?

I've been wondering if its just bad technique being coached by Ansley/sunseri.

You would think that going up against our O every day in practice would produce at least some week to week improvement? It's like our Defense gets worse each week that passes.

I have no idea, but it would be best to start making changes at the top and work your way down.

From what I've heard Sunseri is a lot better at yelling and berating than he is teaching. It is pretty damn obvious that there isn't a lot of teaching going on.

Those guys are lost!!!

Hell, there's a new Heisman candidate every time a qb faces UT. Oregon would have over 1000 yards against UT, easily.

I'm not an Xs and Os guy, but would it make sense at all to just play a very vanilla zone scheme on most downs? Lose the blitzes and go conservative. Kind of going back to the bend but don't break philosophy of Wilcox.

That is problem. We are lacking to much talent. When Tennessee had all the issues off the field they hired someone to "clean up" the program. It wasn't for coaching, but more for P.R. The problem is Tennessee needs some players that don't care to get out there and cause a little mayhem on the field. Your defense is going nowhere if you do not have any enforcers on the field. Remember some of greatest players in football had spotty histories.

We have everyone back from Last Year plus the addition of new starters and the maturity of Freshman yet are light years worse!

This isn't the most Talented defense but either Justin Wilcox was God or Sunseri is a Fool!!

Except for the two true freshman, I think all of our db's have lost their confidence.

Getting toasted week after week will do that do you

For starters you could tell our corners to get their eyes out of the backfield, especially in man coverage. Maybe then they'll have a better chance of covering and not chasing.

I sure hope we go JUCO and recruit some seasoned DB's for next year. Get a 2 year fix while we then recruit some kids to grow into the position.

Watching a few games and was stuck on Oregon for a few minutes.

If UT gives up 48 to TROY, Oregon gets 80

I'm hoping the boosters are as fed up with this regime so we can make a change.

I think they are so worried about the run on the edge that their eyes glance back to the backfield.

I don't profess to be a coach but it appears to me that the entire Tennessee defense is just too dang slow. The linebackers struggle to contain the edge and the DB's are left in the dust all the time. Are they just slow or are they confused which causes them to react slowly? In either case, it sucks. :banghead2:

Issue the DL knives, the LBs 9mm, and the DBs deer rifles with scopes. That is the fix to the defense.....

With the lack of speed in this D, they should play a 4-3 cover 2 with five underneath and try a bend but don't break philosophy. Very similar to stuff Wilcox had to do.

You obviously don't know what you are talking about. We have lost multiple players from last year and lost our planned top 2 cover guys, 1 dismissed and one with an ankle injury. We started 5 guys on D who did not play last year.

change = more of the same and a longer road to recovery unless there is a home run hire. Beware what you wish for.

If we are lacking that much talent after 3 recruiting classes with Dooley then I'm lost. This guy isn't the recruiter we thought he was then.

I agree

I don't get the "we don't have talent" statement. UT has talent all across the board. It may not look it and it isn't equal to LSU/Bama talent but UT has talent. It's plain to see for me that it is coaching and a clear lack of direction by the defensive staff.

I'm just a plain ol' arm chair fan who's never played or coached the game. It appears to me we lack the speed (foot/hand) and technique up front to get into the offensive backfield. A sack or tackle for loss is a rare occasion. If TN Dline and LBs would crash the offense on their own side of the ball, it would help the secondary but TN Dbacks simply give up too much space. Now, let's talk about the blown coverage...

I call better plays on my xbox 360 by just choosing the first thing that "pops up"

then Sal does geting paid millions on the side lines.
