I agree with Lanning ...

Agreed. Top 8. No auto bids. Shortens the calendar by one week so there’s less overlap between playoffs and the portal. Move the start of the regular season back another week too and you could finish the season before the portal so players aren’t opting out of playoffs games (Penn St backup QB last year)
No, go with 16 like the FCS does, It's been working for decades and there were upsets this year.
If he would have suggested the CFP to be only the top 8 teams it would have been perfect.

I don’t care if there’s upsets or not. If you’re the 16th best teams, I can’t make a reasonable argument that you’re actually the best or most deserving team. That was the original argument for moving from 2 to 4.

No, but reducing the number of teams only enhance the flaws of the system. I predicted rightly that Ohio State would lose their first game event though they moved to #1 defeating an overrated Texas, last year result and was able to maintain the position due to a weak conference schedule with many mid teams. I don't mind if there is a better way to determine the most worthy 8.
Not true. The BCS got it right every time. You can easily pick the essential teams. Everything else is filler. We could live in a world where they are a 5 or 10 teams that we're not sure who is best, but we don't. It's never been that way.

The current structure is bad, but more teams will be much worse. There is an element of randomness in football that really just creates a lot of useless crap. There's nothing important about it. If somebody like Miami wins, that doesn't prove they are essential to picking a champion. They are filler. Even they win, they're still just a spoiler.

I think fewer teams will be an improvement. We are going to have to endure all this "deserving" blubber no matter how many teams there are. Nothing we can do about that.

The BCS got it right every time? Like when Nebraska made it in 2001, despite losing their last regular season game by a million points to Colorado? Or in 2003 when the overwhelming top ranked team in both polls, USC, was left out for an Oklahoma team that lost by four touchdowns in their conference title game? And there were controversies in 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2011.

And that was a legit argument. There were many years when 3 teams looked like they might actually be best.

There's no legit argument for going above 4.

At this point, the biggest issue is conference title games. The automatic bids are the only reason, other than money, that they are still being played. They shouldn’t exist and waste an entire week of December.

The fix is actually pretty simple. Move the start of the regular season up a week in August. By doing so, you guarantee every team has two bye weeks during the season. The season wraps up the weekend before Thanksgiving. Every team has a bye the week of Thanksgiving, with the exception of Army/Navy, which is played that Saturday.

The playoffs start the following week. The semifinals are played the Friday/Saturday before Christmas, and the title game is on New Year’s Day, unless that falls on a Sunday, in which case the game is played on the 2nd. The transfer portal opens the day after the title game is played.
