Looks like they are expecting it to remain a cat 3.
This thing is a Cat 3 right now, and the eye is going to be over some of the warmest water for 10 hours, and they don't think it's strengthening? I have a hard time believing that. I saw how powerful little fast moving Charlie blew up after getting away from Cuba. How do think this thing is not going to strengthen?
I don't know. Just saw a story where they predict it stays a three. Maybe because it's crossing at night?
Irma emerged from Cuba with concentric eye walls. A storm can strengthen with concentric eye walls if they are far enough apart - but these were close together. That means weakening into an eye wall replacement cycle is likely. It seems that Irma is doing that. If the inner eye wall doesnr easily clear, then intensification can be paused - and it can take a while for the outer wall to take control, sometimes 24 hours. How long it takes the inner wall to clear will determine how strong she is at landfall.

Edit: here's the story:

So..I just watched the 2 am update, and the thought is that although Irma has strengthened back to a 4 now, that some wind shear maybe is going to cause it to lose some strength, knocking back down to a 3 even though it will be in the really warm waters off Florida's West coast, but the meteorologist I was watching said he wasn't sure about that actually happening.
Hurricane Irma appears to bringing out the best in some volunteers in southern Georgia. As many evacuees left Florida to escape the storm's damage, locals in Valdosta, Ga., were trying to make the whole experience more comfortable.
"We are having a lot of bottleneck traffic on [Interstate] 75 slowing down. People without food, people without money to buy gas. We just felt like it was our duty as Americans to come out and cook, Chad Harrison told Fox News.
Harrison and a group of volunteers gathered outside a gas station near an I-75 exit in Valdosta cooking hot dogs and waving signs that said Free food for evacuees. Harrison said many evacuees were dealing with a very stressful situation and giving them food, or money to get gas, was a way to alleviate some of their anxiety.
