Hurricane Irma

11pm update has it steering further away from Cuba, but still making landfall at Ft Lauderdale. Then skimming the coast briefly, going slightly offshore, then hitting Charleston as a Cat 2

Puerto Rico. That sound...

That's just eerie and creepy.

Looks like I'm headed right back to North Carolina this weekend if the forecast models are accurate.

Good God Ive never been in a tornado or a hurricane, but that train noise is for real. I hope everyone turns out ok.

The Charlie eyewall went right over us, that is a sound I will never forget, but the only good thing about Charlie was he was so small and fast moving it didn't take long for the worst to pass.

That cell phone tower though!

If this storm is any stronger than a cat 4 and it holds track to Miami I wouldn't be anywhere near those high rises.

That video is horrifying. I can't imagine how those people on those islands feel.

The 5am update maintains the same path. Seems to have stabilized. From here shouldn't expect any swings, just some small tweaks.

Winds have dropped by 5mph. I did read that this storm was forming a new eye-wall which can temporarily weaken it before strengthening

I would attribute the failure to the construction not material. But that's just me.

I experienced Charley as well. When talking to friends and family in TN about it, I said remember all those times we saw those people on tv being interviewed after a tornado that said it sounded like a freight train, and we thought they were just exaggerating? They weren't.

I was in the path of a small tornado about 5 years ago and heard the exact same thing. At some point the "whispering" sound that wind makes turns into a low roar and then it sounds like you're surrounded by it.

The building code here is insane. Everything built since 2000 will be fine. Building structures built to withstand at least 175 mph winds. Any windows below 30 feet must be able to withstand a 9 pound 2 by 4 travelling at 50 feet per second (34 mph). Above 30 feet they can withstand a ball bearing travelling at 130 fps or roughly 90mph.
