Can we not get good coaches who can run a top program. There is no doubt that Mason will go on to a top program. And it's obvious why Franklin turned Vandy around. Why can't UT hire these types.

I don't know about Mason. But Vandy and everyone around us seems to know that great coaches pay for themselves. But we'll try for some up and comer for the 4th time and hope they work...

What makes you think Mason will go on to a top program? He has done nothing like Franklin did at Vandy. They still get blown out on a regular basis.

Franklin from Pennsylvania, Penn State culture suited him really well, following in the footsteps of disgraceful but significant tradition. He also saw the futility of not being top 2-3 programs in SEC. Butch was up for the challenge, moving into SEC a big opportunity given where he was, $4M plus buyout, very few expectations, huge tradition at UT.

There were stories about why no one hired Franklin from Maryland when we hired Kiffin. He had his hat in the ring for almost every open job but everyone passed that year. Good coaches can be found. There are up and comers that can take UT back to SEC and National contention. It's just a matter of extremely good fortune to find them. We've been on the ride. Alabama has been on the ride. Oklahoma, USC, Texas, Florida. Miami, Georgia, Michigan etc etc etc. It's a trip everyone takes and it can last 10+ years.

Alabama, USC and Michigan went the brinks truck route and combined it with good timing on coaches leaving the NFL after a few trips around the circus ring. That's what Vol Nation clamors for at this point.

Franklin got VU to allow him to enroll players who qualified by NCAA and SEC qualifications.. The term is academic exceptions. Most every power 5 school in the nation does it to some extent. Franklin did the same at PSU.. Guess who the only team in the SEC is who does not allow academic exception>>> Yep. Tennessee.. Started 2 years before CPF was fired and has been that way since... Trust me its a sticking point with potential coaches. Its why an up and comer will try, (money) but a proven HC wont!
THERE IS A HUGE DISCONNECT BETWEEN ACADEMIA AND ATHLETICS AT TENN!
look at overall performance since 2005 in all sports..

Can anyone here imagine the outrage and nervous mattresses that would be the result of hiring a coach with Franklin's credentials at the time Vandy hired him?

Could it be said that since 1970 Tennessee has only made one splash hire for head football coach. Coach Majors had just come off a NC with Pitt and had the Heisman Tony Dorsett. No one else has been what could be called "splash" hire. Coach Fulmer had a earn as you learn hire, which we where very fortunate to have for so long. If Coach Majors had not been sick we might not of had him... Not doing splash hires, is the Tennessee way.

As I recall it, everyone on the board thought little of Franklin's abilities when he was at Vanderbilt...

Uh oh. Truth alert!

Quick somebody link to the "Vandy Just Hired a New Coach, LOL" thread from 2010(?). That would be some fine reading.

Mason is 16-28 in his 4th season. Dooley was 15-21 in 3 seasons. Dont act like Mason was a great find. He'd been run out of town crying we're racist with that kind of record if he was our coach.

One jackpot and likely two busts there.
