How was Vandy able to hire Franklin and Mason and we get DD and Jones?

As I recall it, everyone on the board thought little of Franklin's abilities when he was at Vanderbilt...

I thought his winning was the product of the SECE being down. I was wrong. The SECE was and is weak but the man is one of the top 10, if not 5, active college coaches. I would not doubt it if he was not in the NFL in the next couple of years.

Can we not get good coaches who can run a top program. There is no doubt that Mason will go on to a top program. And it's obvious why Franklin turned Vandy around. Why can't UT hire these types.

they were coordinators. the last coordinator we hired won a National Championship

Alabama, USC and Michigan went the brinks truck route and combined it with good timing on coaches leaving the NFL after a few trips around the circus ring. That's what Vol Nation clamors for at this point.

One jackpot and likely two busts there.[/QUOTE]

Carroll had a dynasty level run. Alabama is in a dynasty level run. Michigan will be fine with Harbaugh imo. He's in year 3 with 2 10 win seasons under his belt. They were predicted to have an off year this year after losing 11 NFL draft picks and playing in a brutal division. His recruiting is top 10. Hardly a bust.

For the record I wanted Franklin many years ago when he was still at candy. If he can make them decent then he has to be good

Franklin was pure luck. Mason, while still able to beat Butch, hasn't proven much to show that he's anything outstanding.

Tennessee should have never hired Dooley, Kippy Brown should have been named HC and if things didn't go well you had a whole year to prepare. But Hamilton flinched because to be frank he was a giant puss. Hart rolled the dice on Butch and out of the gate it seemed to be rolling and then it came down to Saturday's. We all know how this story ends

We’ve turned into snowflake U. Look at every major men’s sport. Come on man. Somebody’s gotta grow a sack and deal with this stuff. Maybe we should join the MAC?

I don't know about Mason. But Vandy and everyone around us seems to know that great coaches pay for themselves. But we'll try for some up and comer for the 4th time and hope they work...

Franklin was an up and coming OC from Maryland. I;m not sure if Id even call him an up and comer when Vandy hired him.

James Franklin was the offensive coordinator at Maryland from 2008-2010. In 2008, they ranked 68th in total offense, 102nd in 2009, and 80th in 2010.

If Tennessee hired that guy, people here would have taken hostages.

How does memphis find fuente and Norvell back to back we get dooley and butch. Vandy with Franklin and mason.

I think its the culture at Tennessee.

They prefer conservative squeeky clean dorks who are unimaginative, not risk taking straight laced, top button buttoning ignoramuses.

The first time a candidate says something outside the box, they are probably stricken from contention. The first time they use colorful language or extoll a plan not steeped in proper, old fashioned, workaday yessir nonsense.

Franklin was extreme and fiery. Norvell once had cornrows.

Its a culture problem.

I can see this being true.

The fans are already saying the need a HC with Head coaching experience, and has not been fired. That dries up the pool of potential candidates.

I'm thinking Vandy has a better administration. Even they know how to interview better than we do. OMG!

They hired highly regarded coordinators. Start a thread proposing that for us.
